It's Tawky Tawny :o

It's so obvious that's who it will be

I don't have a problem with a character "coming out". That could make for a compelling story.

But isn't DC basically retconning it so a straight character is gay? That i have a problem with. It's just pandering, treating it like a gimmick.

If they want publicity and want to have a major lgbt character they should just have Wonder Woman come out as bi

It would make sense, wouldn't contradict or retcon her previous relationships with men and it would make the vast majority of her fans happy

There's been tons of subtext in the past notably between her and Io and Rucka and Simone have both said they think she's bi

Marston pretty clearly intended her to be as well. He was a wonderful open minded man in a relationship with two bisexual women and those golden age stories are full of subtext that was clearly totally intentional

Wonder Woman being bi would make so much sense. Way more sense than a straight character suddenly being gay. Which really isnt how it works

The more I think about it the more i wish that whoever this character ends up being was being made bisexual instead of gay. That way this would feel a lot less contrived and a lot more like proper character development

The universe has been restarted, the character isn't suddenly gay in terms of the narrative. Also sexuality is fluid and a hard thing to accept for some people. Just because the character hasn't been written as gay before doesn't mean they didn't have homosexual feelings. It just depends how its written. I'm a Gender Studies major. People discover new aspects of their sexuality all the time. I have a friend who considered herself straight all her life now she's suddenly opening up about some lesbian crushes she's had. Things change.

I think it will definitely be the main universe. They are trying to get huge publicity out of this.

I doubt it.

Remember when Spider-Man became Black? (small print in an alternate universe)

But they got the headline and press that they wanted.

Same will go for Flash or Green Lantern being gay. When in reality there are several of each and these aren't the main ones.

Obviously they were feeling pressure from Marvel to with Northstar's gay wedding.

Actually, Archie beat them both to the punch. The Kevin Keller wedding sold out.

Which is why both Marvel and DC feel embarrassed right now. The #3 comic company in America now seems more socially aware than the top two.

The sad part is that they don't see that Kevin Keller was a new from the ground up character and that's why readers took to him. Nor did they see how Archie spent a year building said character up.

It does bother me

As a lesbian comic book fan I want to read about lgbt characters incomic books. They're the kind of characters I want to read, that i enjoy reading about and that I actually care about

If there were no lgbt characters in comic books I wouldn't bother buying comic books. If there were nothing but straight characters in comics I'd have no interest in wasting my money on them

Almost every single comic book I buy right now features lgbt characters. They're the characters I'm actually interested in and I want more lgbt characters in the DCU. LOTS more and I want them featured in as many comic books as possible

It's not acceptable not to include lgbt characters in comic books and I want DC to continue introducing many more lesbian gay and bisexual characters

I also want them to finally introduce some transgender characters in the DCU

First of all, thanks for ignoring the rest of my post and making it look like I'm against having any sort of diversity in comics. Second, and this is the important one, you are not the entire comic reading population. You seem to want all of the characters, new and old, to be LGBT and that's just as stupid as a straight person wanting them all to be straight. Then there's the fact that the amount of LGBT characters you want wouldn't represent the actual percentages of LBGT in the population. You want characters you want to read about to out number characters other people are interested because you're selfish.

I could continue but arguing with you is useless. I'll just say that this board would be better if we didn't have to hear you say "I only care about LGBT characters." every couple of days. Maybe talk about the actual stories rather than who's banging who. If you did that maybe you'd see how terrible Bunker is.

Watch it be Mera. Poor Aquaman can't catch a break.

I disagree about the Northstar wedding Hippie hunter I think its great that Marvel are featuring same sex marriage in their comic books and I'm definitely going to be buying the comic book where it happens

You see I don't actually have a problem with the idea of Northstar getting married to his boyfriend. They could have a couple of issues about it with the wedding, the engagement, the honeymoon, etc., the whole nine yards.

My problem lies in how Marvel is promoting it. To bring out my inner Nostalgia Critic: "It's ****ing Northstar!" No one gives a damn about Northstar except for diehard Alpha Flight fans. Most people don't even know who Northstar is.

Treat it for what it is, Northstar getting married. Not some stupid annoying promotion that Marvel always does where they hype something up without giving any information on it ("Save the Date" making you speculate who is getting married even though it's blatantly obvious that it's Northstar), don't go off on the View to promote it, and most of all don't go off treating it like it's this:

It's not gonna be Icon. No one knows who that is.

Plus they couldn't just change his sexuality all willy nilly with the way the Milestone licensing deal is set up. Then of course there is the fact that DC has no interest in using Milestone characters besides Static.

I think the Batson rumor makes the most sense. Having him be a teen struggling with his sexual identity, coming of age and dealing with bullies could work from a story stand point much better than the other alternatives. Batson has always been a child -- so aging him up to a teen and having him come to pass with his sexual orientation would be a natural progression for the character, only his sexual orientation happens to be gay. To my knowledge, he hasn't been represented as a sexualized character in the past -- not like Clark, Bruce, Dick, Arthur, Oliver, Wally or Barry anyway -- so it wouldn't be a drastic retcon...

This is a move that I could possibly understand.

Maybe they can be the first to have two gay characters marry, and then retcon it so they never did.

I was looking at the premises for some upcoming titles and in July supergay teen titan is guest staring in Superboy, so my money is on Superboy

The lesson here: If a gay character guest stars in your book...you're gay.

Superboy makes a lot of sense. Not as much as Vibe. But some. He is high profile enough to get media attention. Would make the Robin gay jokes way too easy though.

Actually, I think that Marston clearly intended Wonder Woman to be straight. She lives on an island where almost all of the other members of her society are clearly lesbians or bisexuals meanwhile Wonder Woman is the one who falls in love and essentially runs off with Steve Trevor. In Wonder Woman's very first appearance in All-Star Comics #8, Wonder Woman is attracted to men with no true signs of being attracted to women. Also, keep in mind that this version of Wonder Woman would eventually marry Steve Trevor in 1983's Wonder Woman #300 and have a daughter with him.

I feel that what Martson intended to create was a reverse situation where homosexuals dominated society while the minority is the heterosexual woman. I think that this was his way to show that women are stronger than men and have created a better society than men.

Another factor to take into account is that asides from Greg Rucka, no other writer has really put it out there that Wonder Woman is bisexual. Despite Gail Simone's comments, she still had Wonder Woman romantically attached to men (in this case the awful Nemesis character). And she has flat out stated that Wonder Woman has not had a sexual relationship with any Themiscryan Amazon due to the motherly relationship she has with all Amazons on Paradise Island. Even though Phil Jimenez viewed Wonder Woman as a bisexual, he at one point intended to have her lose her virginity to Trevor Barnes. Despite their views, these writers have essentially done the complete opposite in reinforcing Wonder Woman's heterosexuality.

That's so incredibly true.

It's just a shame mysti isn't neither intelligent enough nor able to disconcern true subtext and meaning to understand the wisdom - and the inherent feminism - behind WW's sexuality.

Is it confirmed it's a hero?

That's what I'm wondering too... They say character, they never say it's a hero.
Which villains haven't we seen yet in the New52?
Has Bane been seen yet? If it's Bane, then my day would be made.:woot:

Is anyone here perturbed at the fact the DC and Marvel use race and homosexuality as a gimmick to sell books? If being gay is like everyone one else then why call attention to the fact just to sell books?
Also...Why do revisionist history and make a known heterosexual character gay?
Just create a new character and make him or her gay and see if it will fly with the public.
They won't...Sadly, because ethnic and gay people are nothing but a controversial selling gimmick to them. IMO

I don't think it's Bane, Scott Snyder said that it's a character that hasn't made an appearance in the Nu52 yet.
Plus Bane's been trying to "break" Bruce for years so it's not like it's new or anything :o

I'm perturbed by it. I see this as simply a publicity stunt. Nothing more.

they should instead make a parallel world where all sexualities are reversed
