So great that you were about to be there. Did you enjoy it?

It was great and yes, without telling any spoilers, Rogue One feels very different from the other Star Wars movies. I suppose that's what the Disney executives got worried about. It's a war movie inside de SW universe.

During the Q&A Diego Luna said that Gareth encouraged them to improvise.

I don't think people understand Disney was not worried with that. That's why they created the film and were talking about how it was Zero Dark Thirty meets Star Wars. Their worry from what it sounds like was with the film making aspect and likely character issues etc. Their whole pitch was that and it's what they wanted.

However glad to hear you liked it. Excited to see what the first Anthology film brings.

So to add to that how was the characters in the 20 minutes yous saw?

Is anyone else kinda bummed that there won't be an opening crawl? While I understand they want to save those for the main episodes, at the same time, the crawl is what makes Star Wars....well, Star Wars. It gets you pumped up for what you're about to see (opening crawls about taxation of trade routes notwithstanding). I hope at least these spinoff films have their own bombastic way of throwing us into the story.

It will be different, but I would not say I'm bummed. MSW explained a little bit about how it opens since some have already seen the opening 20 minutes.

How Rogue One: A Star Wars Story Handles the Opening Title Cards and Locations

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story has begun its promotional tour in Mexico with fans seeing around 20 minutes of the film and we have received all the details of this event. Honestly, it is so close to the film being released it is worth just waiting a few more days to see the movie. That said, there are a few things we’ve been obsessing about as Star Wars fans since we learned there would be spin-off films set in the galaxy far, far away.

Up front the “A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away” is still there. The movie will then cut to space and the film gets rolling. The opening crawl will not be there as we’ve been hearing for the last year and recently, basically confirmed in the Entertainment Weekly piece.

The movie does have a Rogue One title card. We see [blackout]the bald-headed Saw Gerrera open a hatch and save young Jyn after the horrible events that change her life forever[/blackout] and then we see the Rogue One logo emblazoned on the screen.

The opening of the film essentially unfolds like Guardians of the Galaxy. We are introduced to a hero and a location and then we change planets. The interesting part to me is that when see a planet for the first time it will have the planet name in text on the bottom right hand side of the screen.
So we won’t have any of those problems people had with Attack of the Clones, for instance, where people weren’t sure if they were looking at Geonosis or Tatooine the first time they saw the film (yes, it was a thing for some).

Sounds just fine to me, sounds like it works. I don't think we need the crawl in this film anyway.

Posted on the last page, it was under spoiler tags.

This entire thing seems like a senior thesis trying to be creative while abiding by continuity.

I am looking forward to it and will like because of Vader, but over all, I don't think it will be as well recieved as E7

Love ya broseph but I don't think I've ever seen you display any criticism for any movie here, ever.. groupie!!

:P I kid.

But in all seriousness, I disagree. Idc if it's a television short or a film, the opening crawl is necessary because "Star Wars". Doesn't rebels have an opening crawl?

Clone wars did.

I'll never Say never but if I have to guess I don't think it will be as well received as episode 7 by the audience for sure. I think that the characters seem fine but I just don't know if I think they're going to come off as good as the ones in episode 7. The characters are really the strength of that film, as most people know. Even a smaller character like Poe became a big deal and I'm sure they expanded his role in the sequels because of that.

The Clone Wars cartoon had the newsreel at the start, not a crawl. Rebels does not have a crawl. I think the very first episodes (or the movie in Clone Wars case) had one.

And I am getting flashbacks to the Fox Fanfare arguments.

This. The Clone Wars never had a crawl, including the theatrical release. That was the purpose of Tom Kane's newsreel style voiceovers at the beginning of each episode (and the theatrical film).

Rebels is basically a cold open every week.

I know you're teasing but yes I've displayed criticism many times for movies, tv shows, games etc. Just most of the time for me the positives outweigh the negatives but when stuff bothers me or I don't like it, you'll know because I make it known haha. Like I said I know you're teasing but I could invite you to some threads with me where I've been discussing a lot of stuff I hate or am more down/negative on. :cwink:

But as someone mentioned rebels doesn't have an opening crawl. Just a title card after a cold open. I am happy they still have the "a long time ago" though. But for me personally a crawl doesn't feel necessary. The crawl for ANH in a sense is basically the crawl for Rogue One.

Next time you criticize something I expect an invite to that thread! Haha but I know you have, I've poked at you about this before, hence the "reoccuring" jab, if you will. It's only cause I like you though!

And did it? I guess I remembered wrong. That being said I have to acknowledge a bias.. the opening crawl and theme has always been one of my favorite parts of Star Wars.

Saving it for the title films really does make it more of a luxury for sure.

I was watching TFA today before work. I just can't wait to see a modern vader and what he can do.

I doubt the huge, bombastic tone of the title and crawl will fit as well with this film anyway. I'm expecting something a lot smaller and subdued.

In terms of scale and number of action scenes, this looks even bigger than TFA.

Agree, Rogue One will even have a space battle and AT-ACT's.
