Ghostbusters 3 - Part 2

They do have a point. Nothing the person said was inherently and blatantly sexist, but they have a point...

If this reboot was with an all male cast or a mixed cast of males and females there'd be less of an outcry right now and you all know it's true.

There's a latent reading in this thread that says that most of you are simply not okay with the male roles in this film/reboot being supporting roles only.

Sad thing is that this mentality held by a certain demographic is why stuff like an all-female Ghostbusters happen.

If a female action comedy was a every month occurrence, then no one would be rushing to turn a property into something else.

Instead of a Miles Morales Spiderman, we get 2(maybe 3) reboots of the same dang Peter Parker malarky.

Now, this movie is almost guaranteed to make bank cause women are hungry to see themselves on screen. As long as the budget stays relatively low(which is almost a given), and the funny cast gels, guess what? that male demo won't be necessary to make this a success.

Marginalizing female comedians? CHECK!

Everyone's 2nd favorite quirky white girl in their 20s? CHECK!

Rampant vagina-phobia?! CHECK!!!

Safe choice to dissuade others from thinking your opinions are anything but delightfully sexist? CHECK!!!!

Just gonna quote myself here...

This all female thing is kind of genius. Feig is basically ensuring that this film is immune to criticism.

Being a reboot of a classic and beloved series, it was going to be raked over the coals no matter what. With an all female gimmick though? No one will dare **** on it (at least not publicly) and anyone who does will be called out for MUH SEXISM. You can already see it in this thread. Don't like this brave and progressive new direction for the series? Clearly you're just a backwards, closed-minded misogynist. It's the perfect get out of jail free card.

You do realize criticism requires actually seeing what you criticize?

Anything before that is just hysteria and unfounded speculation.

"I hate anything with Melissa McCarthy!!!I won't see it"

She hasn't even been announced in the cast. What are you railing against?

First off, I would seriously love it for you to point out where I said anything about Melissa McCarthy.

Second, yes you can absolutely criticize casting before a movie. Feig says it will star "hilarious women". Well, this is obviously a subjective opinion, but the fact that he seems to think a woman who has made a career out of being a walking fat joke is hilarious is perhaps a little cause for concern.

Nevermind the fact that this film is a reboot and, as I said, undoubtedly would have raised everyone's dander no matter who was starring in it.

Well this really killed my enthusiasm. I was loving the idea of the young female group taking the mantle. But going full reboot? Blah.

Eh, Ramis passed away and Murray and Moranis probably won't do it. Does it really matter if it's a sequel since Ray and Winston would be the only originals? I don't know, I'm willing to give a reboot a chance. I mean Blues Brothers 2000 had the same creative team behind it and Dan Aykroyd was in it and it was still awful.

Blues Bros 2000 was awful. Lack the 80's grit of the original.

Second off, I said criticisms. And that McCarthy comment is in every other comment posted.

It was you(understood 2nd person)

What do you expect them to cast? Unfunny people?

I guess Wally Pfister is going to make ugly cinematography on his movies.

Hating reboots is fine. But the fact this wasn't going to star the original GB has been known for ages. It was always going to passed to someone else. So why does it matter if it's all women?

Melissa McCarthy's career is much longer than that. I don't see everyone jumping ship cause Vince Vaughn is cast in True Detective and he's worn his comedy schtick thin, but of course, fans will remember whatever in his resume is to enough to make them like him.

The Ghostbusters are a specific group of 4 people, not a generic title. Them passing on the title would serve a purpose, even if it was only one of them.

Have you seen "Transcendence"? Ugly movie.

I think this is as good as anything we were likely to get with Ramis gone. Akroyd and Hudson can cameo as ghosts or something.

I think what's going to make or break this project is whether they go for situational comedy or physical, slapstick stuff.

The reason GHOSTBUSTERS and GHOSTBUSTERS II worked so well was the intelligent comedy mixed with decent action and solid characters.

If they try to make it a "modern comedy", I don't see it working out too well. Here's hoping the creators understand that.

Yeah, I might be OK with this if they left Melissa Mccarthy out of it. seriously, what happened to the Seth Rogen/ Eliza Dushku version?

I only know Melissa McCarthy from Gilmore Girls and I always liked her on that show.

Melissa McCarthy is a good actress. I loved her as Sooki on Gilmore Girls. She is great in Bridesmaids. But she has done what many others who break out in comedies, rom coms or action movies do. They start taking all projects thrown at them for quick cash, and their careers quickly become parodies. I understand why you would do it, but it can lower your profile to the general public.

Well sure.

If they like the women. If they like what the story entails.

Sex and the City Ghosts starring Melissa McCarthy won't get it done.

Urgh. This is like when marvel hired a female director for Thor and everyone assumed she was going to turn it into twilight.

You would think we would have made progress since then and yet...

Changing a team that originated as a female group to a group of males = sexist and a problem.

Changing a team that was male to a group of females = not sexist, not a problem

That reminds me of the claim that "black people can't be racist because (fill in your own "reason")".

I wouldn't mind it so much if they made a continuation of the old series, where a group of hilarious and overweight women became Ghostbusters. But to reboot the whole series and transform the characters into overweight women is stupid. Why not make something original instead?

Just gonna quote myself here...

You were right. Are you a psychic? Do I win the lottery tomorrow?:wow:

The stupid whining about sexism/racism/homophobia needs to stop. I'm tired of idiots throwing those words around just to shut people up.

I don't care if it's all female.

I DO care that it seems to have absolutely nothing to do with the classic 1984 Ghostbusters but they're calling it Ghostbusters anyway just to cash in on the reputation of the original.

It's as if they know if they just make a new story about people fighting ghosts, nobody would care, so they have to hang the Ghostbusters brand on it despite there being no connection and that will automatically make it a hit.

And what are you rallying for? What is the need for this crusade for women that you have embarked on?

I could have dealt with the Ghostbusters all female team if 3 things happen:

1. At least one of the females were a daughter to one of the OG Ghostbusters. Now won't happen.

2. Ernie and/or Dan is like the Xavier of the New Ghostbusters team. Won't happen.

3. MELISSA MCCARTHY STAYS THE HELL AWAY FROM THIS!!!! Won't happen as she's been in Feig's last 3 films.

I'm more comfortable with an all female cast over Akroyd and Hudson. Better a reboot than a sad attempt at what they were going with before. But let's hope this movie is actually good. It's not something I mind at all, particularly since we live in a so called progressive time in Hollywood where "There's more diversity in film." If we wanna see more female led films, then this is a way to do it. Could it be forced? Sure. But there's really no other way to navigate this playing field. Anyone have any better ideas? Does it have to be Ghostbusters? Rather, why the **** not? This is Ghostbusters 25 years after the mediocre sequel. NOBODY gives a **** about the concept of a third Ghostbusters movie. Nobody even asked for a third Ghostbusters movie with the original male cast before all this happened. On a purely conceptional level, a third Ghostbusters movie still sucks.

But is there more potential now that we've seemed to wipe Akroyd and Hudson? Yup. Let's just hope the movie is good first. A bad movie is still a bad movie, women or not. If it sucks, it will be sad and admired attempt in the short run but probably forgotten in the long run. If it's great, hey it will only be better for more female led films, which are sadly still underrepresented. This can only help if it's a hit and actually good.

I criticize Sony and their lack of handle and care for their properties for this potential cluster****.

I would have preferred something like Star Trek reboot or 21 Jump Street reboot where it's a reboot but also the original films happened and they pay some sort of tribute to them.

Only way Melissa should be in this is if she is the one that dies before the opening credits.

But then they would probably give that character a twin sister so that Melissa can still be in it. Probably best 2 avoid that then

I agree. I can't see GB fitting in well with today's comedy stylings. Any suggestion made in this thread so far, male or female, just doesn't scream GB to me. We need comedians with a more laid back sense of humor I feel.

The only exception I can see is Aubrey Plaza as a Janine type office manager, and the only person I can think of that would remind me of Murray would be RDJ.

So...it's the first time I have felt this way. I loved the Star Wars Prequels and grew up on the original, kingdom of the Crystal Skull is down there with Temple of Doom, but it didn't poop on my childhood, and I was optimistic when Affleck was cast as Batman. But hearing the news about GB's made me a bit...apprehensive.

But the more I think about it, the more I am 100% on board. I'm sorry, I just want another Ghostbusters. I want something for my boys to grow up with. My kid is absolutely ecstatic about Star Wars Rebels and Power Rangers, but he watched an episode of The Real Ghostbusters (Jeanine the Ghostbuster in honor of the recent news) and when it was over he, in 3 year old language, said we're done, turn it to Mickey. But a new movie means, hopefully, a new cartoon, and even if it's an all female cast, he loves the original movies and knows that boys can be Ghostbusters, too. Meanwhile, as of today the only Ghostbusters costume the girls can buy is one where there ass cheeks hang out the bottom.

I don't care if it's all female, if the proton packs are different, the car and location are different. To me there are a few things that need to remain intact for this to carry on as Ghostbusters for 2016 or whenever it would come out. It's got to be scary (the terror dogs and the librarian ghost frightened me as a kid), it has to be funny as hell, and I want packs, traps and ghost wrangling. There has to be an idea that this extraordinary thing, catching ghosts, is treated like just any other job. Glorified exterminators is all they were. And keep the logo and theme song in some way. I was watching the Robocop reboot which was descent, but I loved that the original theme became the music to Sam Jackson's news broadcast. Wonderful way to sneak that into. Even GB2 had a different theme. But don't toss the logo! Morph it a bit like GB2 if you want, but don't change it. That's brand recognition, anyways, and I doubt Sony wants to go on without it.

I hate that this is a reboot, but Feig made a lot of sense. A movie where ghosts and ghost busting has been around for 25 years is tough. The movie we got would be something very different from what we know and more in line with Dan's original synopsis of futuristic ghost catchers in a world where everyone believes in them. I also LOVE origin stories. Since I was a kid it's all I ever wanted to play.

Feig says he wants to play on the humor experienced in the midst of fear and I think that's someone who knows what Ghostbusters is about. Good luck to him and may we all make an about face on these comments when/if it comes out. I'm banking on when.

Well said. Especially that last bit.

And I don't really get the Melissa McCarthy hate. I get that she's overexposed, but she's also capable of being genuinely funny, in terms of comic timing and delivery, not just crashing into things.
