Gods & Men: The Ancient Myths RPG: Chapter 1 OOC Thread

Archilaus is a master of Wind/Air, JB. I completely for got to add that.

And here's my second character:

Gods & Men: The Ancient Myths RPG: SEASON I

Screen Name: Andy C.

Character you have created (include known alias or nicknames here as well): Togruk Kor (known to enemies as Red Helm)

Race/Culture: Orc

Racial Traits:
Orcs: Low-Light Vision (able to see twice as far as a human can in torchlight, starlight, moonlight and similar poorly lit conditions and are able to distinguish color and detail); average life span of 50 years

Character Class (Somewhat similar to the classes in the CAH RPG, but with some differences) (Choose One):

Fighter (the quintessential melee masters and weaponed warriors; fighters include soldiers, barbarians, gladiators, martial artists, rangers, and all general warriors)

Patron Deity:
Ilneval, the Orc deity of Warfare. He lives in the orcish realm of the Nishrek. Ilneval's priests wear red metal armor and red metal helmets. His holy days are on battle days. Blood and weapons are sacrificed to him both before and after battle

Magic: None. Togruk practices no magic himself, but knows its worth, and is not above using magical items, or employing spellcasters in his ranks.

Speech Color and/or Font (actually say what you're using, i.e. Arial Black; don't go "Like this", or what not): Trebuchet MS, bold, Dark Olive Green

Character Alignment: Evil

Character Personality: A prodigy among his race, Togruk is remarkably intelligent--even able to read and write--and he has devoted all of his intelligence to the art of warfare. A careful planner and brilliant tactician, he knows that a war cannot be won by a single battle, but by a well-managed and governed campaign.

Being an Orc, he is still quick to anger, but he is also intelligent enough not to let his anger get the best of him. To a human, he would still be considered incredibly hot-blooded, but he is almost passive by Orc standards--an apparent 'weakness' which he uses to identify rivals before he kills them.

Most of all, he is something of a zealot, firmly believing that the Orc race deserves the dignity and unity as the other races--and most importantly, land to call their own. He is intent on uniting the scattered Orc clans of the world and carving out a kingdom. And he will burn, pillage, and kill anything and anyone in his way to do so.

Origin Info/Details:

Like virtually all Orcs, Togruk was born into a clan of raiding barbarians, his father a trusted lieutenant of their Warlord. He was raised to fight, to rage, to kill without mercy, and to revel in the slaughter of an enemy. He caught on much faster than any of the other young ones, which meant he would spend his years fighting off the other brutes who thought that their sheer strength was enough. Equally strong and far more intelligent, Togruk was destined to be one of his clan's greatest warriors, but he was still too young to be let into a real battle.

He was still emerging from childhood when his clan and a hundred others were recruited by Mordred the usurper, to bolster his final siege on Camelot. Unable to fight, Togruk was brought along as a camp aide, and watched the battle from afar. The Orcs numbered in tens of thousands outside the walls of Arthur's castle, but their innate bloodlust got the better of them, and in their blind collective rage, they let their weapons swing wildly at friend and foe alike. With no real leader to hold the clans together, the Orcs were cut down all too easily by the Knights of the Round Table, and though Arthur fell that day, so did the Orcs.

Togruk saw what had become of his people, and was at once enraged and inspired. After seeing the prowess of the Knights, he strove to match their ways, and vowed to unite what remained of his race. Growing older, he took command of a nomadic band of marauders, plundering the cities of Humans and Elves. While the others found their spoils in gold and food, Togruk hoarded a treasure more valuable than any of the others: books. He learned to read and write, and study the ways of his enemy, so that he could overcome them. One by one, he taught only his most trusted lieutenants what he had learned, was emboldened by their eagerness and success in educating themselves.

Since then, he has embarked to travel the lands of Europe, to conscript what remains of the Orc clans, and unite them under a single banner. Only then can he make his fellow Orcs more than what they are, and create a kingdom of their own...even if it means burning all other lands to the ground.

Attributes (Select one from each category) (some races are greater or weaker than a human in specific categories and will be noted below or in the racial traits section of the OOC thread):

Strength Level: Peak Human

Speed/Reaction Timing Level: Normal Human

Endurance at MAXIMUM Effort/Durability: Peak Human

Agility: Normal Human

Intelligence: Genius

Fighting Skill: Mastered

Resources: Minimal (at first)

Notable Equipment: He commands a band of marauders, about 300 strong at first. Most carry rudimentary weapons and armor, a favorite among them being the Orc Double-Axe. There are a handful of Keen and Masterwork weapons in the horde, loot taken from fallen victims.

Togruk himself carries an iron warhammer, as well as a heavy spiked shield. Wrapped around his waist is a spiked iron chain for use as a backup weapon. He wears mostly studded leather armor, with some iron plating, particularly his spiked gauntlets and boots, and his namesake Red Helm, in tribute to Ilneval.

Most supplies or equipment are simply dispersed among his troops, which means to keep his army (and himself) fed, he must continually strike at useful targets--primarily Human towns and cities.

Weaknesses: The size of his army is every bit as much of a liability as it is a strength. If he cannot keep his warriors supplied and fed, as well as satisfying their natural Orcish battle-lust, they may disperse or rebel, and his efforts would all be lost.

Supporting Characters:
Gurn- Togruk's right hand and most trusted enforcer, he is an expert swordsman whose poisoned blade has silenced nearly as many would-be troublemakers in the ranks as it has adversaries and victims on the battlefield.

Right-Eye- An expert archer and tracker, Togruk has employed him as his assassin, in order to weaken his enemies' defenses or eliminate their leadership altogether.

Krek- A powerful mystic and high priest of Gruumsh, he is Togruk's stand-by for magical obstacles, as well as a guiding voice for the warriors.

Describe using proper English grammar what you think you can bring to the RPG: An interesting villain, who may not start as an immediate threat to the world, but over time will gain prominence and notoriety. Also, I've become rather fond of the idea of a 'patriot' Orc--think if you mixed George Washington with Ghengis Khan and then painted him green.

How many times do you intend on posting a DAY IN the RPG: As often as possible, so at least more than I did last time.

Do you know how to post pictures on the hype boards:

Sample Post (Minimum Four decent-sized paragraphs containing dialogue):

Stupid.

That is what they think of the Orc. They treat us as a tool, a blunt object to be swung at their enemies. Beasts to be used for whatever dirty work they do not want to do themselves. Meat to be thrown into the grinder.

The Orc is strong. The Orc is fast. The Orc is powerful. But the Orc is not feared. Because the Orc is stupid, and the other races like it that way.

We are kept scattered from each other, driven from lands that should be ours, and made to live in the dark places of the world. We live like beasts because we are treated like beasts, never given the chance to be better. There is no Orc teacher, there is no more Orc writing, there is no Orc kingdom. We are born to be savages, and so that is all that most of us ever become.

But not me.

I want more than this. I want my people to be strong, to be united...and to prove that we are more than just mindless brutes to be hunted by the 'good' and manipulated by the 'evil.'

The Elf whose throat is closing under the weight of my boot would never understand that. I see the fear of his own death in his eyes, but just under that, I see his contempt. More than his fear of dying, he is bitter about dying at the hands of a stupid Orc.

"You are lucky, Elf," I say to him in his own tongue, watching his eyes widen as he understand what I say. "Most of your friends are going to be gutted, chopped limb from limb, burned, maybe even eaten. But you are going to serve a purpose."

"Wh--wha--*ggghhhk!*"

My boot crushes down on his throat some more.

"You will be prepared for the altar of sacrifice. Your flesh will belong for Gruumsh. Your bones will belong to Baghtru. Your blood will belong to Ilneval, as will your sword. Your magical pendant will be given to Luthic."

I stomp down, crushing the Elf's windpipe. I look him right in the eyes as he begins to suffocate.

"And your land, and your family....will belong to me."

This conquest is only one of many that lay ahead of me. I know that I will die in battle some day...but not before I see my vision through.

The Orc will have a home.

The Orc will have a kingdom.

The Orc...will have a King.

Approved.

Nice app, Andy. Good to see another villain and an orc get some love.

One thing though, you left his fighting skill blank. Please fill that in when you can and you're good to go.

In case anyone is getting rusty on the Norse Paganism, the two crows in my post are Huginn and Muninn. They are servants of Odin, going across the worlds and gathering information which they then bring to the Allfather.

I got the idea of using them from Carnage´s post where the Egyptian deity approaches Amun. The idea of all the different types of Gods going "Alright, you mother****ers need to get this **** under control FAST." raises the stakes even more.

Yeah, being big into Norse myth, I liked the touch of Odin's ravens and the whole image of the dream. Good stuff, Sensei.
Really looking forward to this war playing out over the course of the season.

ACHTUNG!

I know I said I'd allow a 3rd character down the road, but there's a character I'd really like to start playing and not have to wait until next season to do it.

So I'm flexing the old GM muscles and raising the character limit to 3. So let it be written, so let it be done.

Fixed. Also, major points for the Metallica reference in your last post there.

Screen Name: Johnny Blaze

Character you have created (include known alias or nicknames here as well): Cy-Spar Tuin'Tarl

Race/Culture (What race is your character, and, if human, what culture does your character hail from, for example is your character Roman, Athenian, Celtic, Norse, Spartan, Persian, etc) (GMs must approve of any race not part of the big 5: Human, Elf, Dwarf, Halfling, and Orc):
Drow (Dark Elf)

Racial Traits (traits specific to your race; a list can be found in the second post of the OOC thread) (For races not listed, GMs must create traits for that race first before player approval):
Low Light Vision (able to see twice as far as a human can in torchlight, starlight, moonlight and similar poorly lit conditions and is able to distinguish color and detail); Resistant to Magical Enchantment (spells from the Enchantment school of magic do not affect them as well as it would a man); Elves do not sleep but enter a state of deep meditation called Reverie; Darkvision (able to see in darkness up to 60 feet, but in black and white only); Possess the innate magical ability to summon a globe of darkness impossible to see through without magical means (only able to use once a day as it is taxing to the Dark Elf's spirit; the globe is not mobile and must be fixed in a specific spot up to 30 feet away from the Dark Elf; globe is only a 10 feet radius and only lasts for a minute) and to call upon a faerie fire (ghostly blue flames outline an intended target within 30 feet from the Dark Elf, but the flames do no damage; as with the globe of darkness, this is usable once per day and only lasts for a minute)

Character Class (Somewhat similar to the classes in the CAH RPG, but with some differences) (Choose One):
Spell Swords (Darkmask, Elite Agents of Vhaeraun)

Patron Deity (only required for those under the Paladin heading or those who are a priest, cleric, or other divine agent; others may choose one if they wish to flesh out their character more) (Your Patron Deity MUST be from the pantheon significant to your character's culture, I.E. no Odin worshiping Egyptian Priestess) (Elves and Dwarves have their own pantheons which are briefly detailed under the Mounting Heavens of Celestia with the race's evil deities mentioned in the Nine Hells of Baator): Vhaeraun (Lesser Drow Deity of thievery and males)

Magic (if your character is a Mystic, choose from the following schools of magic to specialize in. NOTE: A player will only be able to cast spells that deal with their schools, forsaking all others, so choose carefully. A mystic gets 4 points to spend in deciding their skill level in magic: 1 point equals minor skills in the chosen school, 2 points equal moderate skill, and 4 equals mastery in the school of choice. Paladins receive 1 point, and it must go towards Protection; Spellswords get only 1 point, and can choose any school to specialize in; Minstrels get 2 points and at least one must go towards Enchantment) (Descriptions of the schools and the point system can be found in a reserved post in the OOC Thread): Phantasmal

Speech Color and/or Font (actually say what you're using, i.e. Arial Black; don't go "Like this", or what not): Indigo, Bold, Arial Narrow

Character Alignment (Good/Evil/Neutral):
Evil

Character Personality (Give information on how your character acts, what he/she believes in, how they handle situations): Cy-Spar grew up in the typical Drow society. Being male made him a second class citizen, and, as such, he has a secret hatred for Lolth and all her clergy. He is an untrusting individual, often seeing everyone as a potential enemy. He is a master swordsman and is very arrogant because of it, often slinging witty jabs at others. He's an intelligent creature with the uncanny ability to read people's body movements to help size up and predict his opponent's moves.
He rarely does anything unless he will gain something for it, and especially if it brings down Lolth's power base.

Origin Info/Details (don't be blunt, be as thorough as possible): The second-born son in House Tuin'Tarl, the 3rd House of the Drow city of Haundrauth. Located deep in the Underdark beneath Mount Helagsfjället in Svealand, Haundrauth is a massive Drow city, with sixty-six houses and thousands of slaves. But only the top eight Houses ruled, with the Matron Mother of each sitting on a ruling council. In any society being a son born to a ruling, noble family would be a blessing.
But not in the matriarchal world of the drow.

Being treated as a second-class citizen in his world since birth, Cy-Spar grew to despise Lolth, the dark goddess of the drow. The priestess' of Lolth ruled all through fear, tyranny, subterfuge. Theirs was the will of the Spider Queen, and their will was law. Trained to be an assassin since coming of age, Cy-Spar did whatever his mother and head of his house, Matron Chessirae Tuin'Tarl, said. Often performing the shady, dirty jobs that nobody else would and required discretion, Cy-Spar quickly became known in the underground community of cutthroats and was soon approached by a priest of Vhaeraun.

The priest knew of Cy-Spar's hatred for the Spider Queen, and offered him an alternative power: Vhaeraun, the drow patron of males. With his new faith, Cy Spar began taking jobs on the side for the Church of the Masked Lord. It didn't take long for him to advance in the ranks of the clergy, and soon Cy-Spar was initiated in the ranks of the Darkmasks, the elite spellsword warriors of Vhaeraun.

Cy-Spar continues to carefully balance his life under the rule of his Matron Mother, and his secret status as a high ranking figure in the Church of the Masked Lord. Knowing full well that if his Matron Mother ever discovered his treachery to Lolth, he'd suffer a fate worse than death. It is this knowledge that has Cy-Spar constantly longing to escape the living hell that is Haundrauth to freedom...

Attributes (Select one from each category) (some races are greater or weaker than a human in specific categories and will be noted below or in the racial traits section of the OOC thread):

Strength Level: Elven (weaker than a man in peak condition)

Speed/Reaction Timing Level:
Elven (quicker than a man in peak condition)

Endurance at MAXIMUM Effort/Durability: Elven (less sturdy than a man in peak condition)

Agility: Elven (more agile than a man in peak condition)

Intelligence: Above-Average

Fighting Skill: Mastered

Resources: Large

Notable Equipment (Items your character has on them of relevance, such as thieving tools if they're a rogue, holy items if they're a priest, magic weapons and/or armor, magic items, etc; we assume you're character has basic stuff, like rations, waterskin, and a torch or lantern; be as specific as possible as well as realistic as possible, I.E. if your character is carrying a ton of stuff their mobility and endurance will be sorely hindered; also keep in mind that magic items are rare, expensive, and difficult to make) (For ideas for notable equipment, and magic items, check out the link below the app):
Ddrin, the Blood Stealer (scimitar with magically honed edge able to cut through solid stone); Elven Chainmail (stronger and lighter than conventional chainmail); House Tuin'Tarl Crest (Necklace given to all noble members of House Tuin'Tarl tuned specifically to a certain drow so that only they can use it's powers. Grants the bearer the ability to levitate for a total of 30 minutes per day, cumulative; Acts as a homing beacon to others wearing the crests of the same house); hand crossbow (small crossbow that fires tiny bolts tipped with the potent drow sleep poison, able to knock out even a dwarf with a single dose)

Weaknesses (If your character has any specific weakness, such as a vampire's weakness to sunlight (among other things) or a Faerie's weakness to iron, list them here):
Sudden exposure to bright lights (sunlight, a daylight spell, etc) blinds a drow for a few minutes, making them completely vulnerable to attacks. Even after a few minutes, their vision is still impaired enough to the point where their attacks, movements, and all other physical feats are slower due to the pain caused by the bright light and the concentration used to push through it. After a half an hour of exposure, the drow's vision has returned and is able to function normally in daylight.

Supporting Characters (Does your character have a significant other? A mother? A Friend? Who are they, what do they have to do with your character?):
Chessirae (Matron Mother of House Tuin'Tarl); Jadzia (Elder Sister and Priestess of Lolth); Xunnil (Second Sister and Priestess of Lolth); Mund (Elder Boy and Weapons Master); Felandul (Fourth born son and conjurer in training); Abargandar (Darkmask of Vhaeraun and ally of Cy-Spar); The Shadow (High Priest of Vhaeraun and leader of the Church of the Masked Lord in Haundrauth)

Describe using proper English grammar what you think you can bring to the RPG: Experience in RPing, and a interesting character that will provide a look into the brutal society of the drow.

How many times do you intend on posting a DAY IN the RPG: As many as need be, life permiting.

Do you know how to post pictures on the hype boards: Yes

Sample Post (Minimum Four decent-sized paragraphs containing dialogue):

The purple lichen clinging to the earthen walls of the compound eerily lit the immediate area in a soft, dark hue. It was nighttime in the city of Haundrauth, or what constituted as night beneath the Earth's surface in the Underdark. Dubbed the Night Below, the Underdark was the world beneath the world. An alien place for surface travels, filled with foreign wonders and dangers.

And one such danger in the Underdark were the drow, the dark elves, masters of the skyless night. Scattered in cities and strongholds throughout the Norselands as well as parts of Europe, the influence of the dark elves was more widespread than surface dwellers thought. But the drow rarely came to the surface, save to raid settlements and capture slaves. They preferred to stay below in their subterranean world, filled with intrigue, adventure, and murder.
Most drow waited for the day when the Lady Lolth, chief goddess of the drow race, would lead her worshipers to victory over the surface elves and return them to their ancient prominence.

But Cy-Spar saw beyond the false promise from a deceiving goddess. Lolth was perfectly content to keep the drow as they were now: more concerned with self-promotion and stuck in a constant power struggle between each other. Drow Houses often clashed behind the scenes, doing whatever they can to improve their position and power base. All the while keeping them solely in dependence of Lolth for their desired power.
For without the Spider Queen, to be drow would be meaningless.

Cy-Spar spat as the thought crossed his mind. Looking out over the bluff to the city below, Cy-Spar couldn't hide the contempt he felt for Haundrauth, his city and prison.

"What troubles you, Cy-Spar", asked Abargandar, Cy-Spar's partner on this mission.

It wasn't long ago, only seventy-five years, that he was approached by the Church of Vhaeraun and joined their ranks. The Masked Lord's preachings struck a cord with Cy-Spar as they were thoughts he wholeheartedly agreed with. Males were the equals of females and worth just as much, if not more, to drow society. So Cy-Spar began to take jobs in secret that helped further the influence of the Church of the Masked Lord, while doing his best to keep his double life a secret from his siblings and, especially, his mother.

Matron Chessirae was as ruthless and cruel as she was beautiful, and Cy-Spar did not wish to bring her wrath down upon him. For it would be a fate worse than death.

"Nothing but the usual", Cy-Spar replied with a sigh.
"It is a beautiful sight from up here, but it's beauty is nothing but a mask. Covering up the sore-covered body of the true Haundrauth. I tell you, Abargandar, our people will never truly be free to reclaim our birthright while under Lolth's yolk."

"And that is why we are up here tonight", Abargandar replied without hesitation.
"To further the doctrine of Vhaeraun and help bring down the *****-Queen's power base just a bit more."

"And speak of the devil", Cy-Spar stated as he pointed down to a small caravan leaving the city gates below them. It was a small group, no more than five drow warriors, a priestess, and a dozen bugbear slaves all carrying large sacks over their backs.
Slowly the precession made it's way towards the main tunnels that delved deeper into the Underdark.

"Right on time", smiled Abargandar.
"Are you ready?"

Cy-Spar unsheathed his scimitar, Ddrin, the blood stealer, the blade glowing faintly red in the gloom. Without a word, Cy-Spar leaped off of the cliff down towards the unsuspecting caravan...

Wow, that was quick. :wow:
I knew there was a reason I chose you as an AGM, Trusty.

Pfft, like a half-breed loser could hope to kill a pure-blood drow. You're as crazy as a GW on mushrooms. :whatever:

I have those!

*digs through cart*

Oh, wait...that party two villages back...

Best night I'll never remember.

Screen Name: Optikal

Character you have created (include known alias or nicknames here as well): Olek Thorgrim - The Axe Master.

Race/Culture: Norse Human

Racial Traits (traits specific to your race; a list can be found in the second post of the OOC thread) (For races not listed, GMs must create traits for that race first before player approval): None. Normal Human.

Character Class (Somewhat similar to the classes in the CAH RPG, but with some differences) (Choose One): Fighter

Speech Color and/or Font (actually say what you're using, i.e. Arial Black; don't go "Like this", or what not): Arial Black.

Character Alignment (Good/Evil/Neutral): Good

Character Personality (Give information on how your character acts, what he/she believes in, how they handle situations):

Olek is a decent man. All he wanted in life was simplicity, to find a wife and bear strong sons. He wanted to ive in peace and quiet, away from wars and fighting and death that seemed to plague the rest of the lands.

He is a man of principle, morals and honour. He lives in a world of black and white, of good and evil and his beliefs are iron. He would never harm a woman or child and would never steal or decieve.

Origin Info/Details (don't be blunt, be as thorough as possible):

Living in a small village on the outskirts of the Tiveden forest, Olek was out felling trees for the winter timber stores when the raiders arrived. Men from far off lands, armed to the teeth took the village unawares, slaying men and babies, raping and kidnapping the women and looting what they could.

Olek had heard the violence from high in the hills, but had arrived too late, seeing only the distant riders as they left the remnants of a once peaceful community ablaze.

Holding the lifeless body of his son in his arms, Olek vowed to the gods that he would find the men responsible and avenge his loss.

Agility: Normal Human

Intelligence: Average

Fighting Skill: Trained

Weaknesses: Olek is a normal human warrior and so carries all the usual physical weakness. Also he would be vunerable to magic and sorcery.

Supporting Characters : At present time, Olek is a man alone, but will have a band of NPCS later in his tenure. Nothing is yet set in stone though.

Describe using proper English grammar what you think you can bring to the RPG: Enthusiasm for the genre and the passion to write a decent character.

SAMPLE:

The deep blues and blacks of the night sky seemed to shift and move as he rode along the line of trees. Stars twinkled like diamonds, accompanying the bright beam of a high full moon. The ground was thick with snow, fresh and white from the recently passed storms.

Olek pulled the hood of his travelling cloak deep over his head and leaned low atop his stallion. The forest to his left was silent other than the occaisional creak of an overladen branch or the faint chatter of its nocturnal inhabitants. To his right, the plains spread out, untouched and smoothed by the thick white blanket.

Clear skies meant that there'd be no more tonight and the tracks he was following would still be clear and easy in the morning. Resiging himself to stop for the night, Olek angled his large mount towards the trees and entered the forest, seeking out a cliff face or crevice to shelter in. "Come Chase, you've done well lad and I've some oats with your name on them" he growled into the big stallions ear. The horse gave an approving snort and bowed it's head towards the forest.

As they plodded and picked carefully through the trees, Oleks mind flashed to the men who had razed the village. He imagined their faces, their numbers. He knew there were at least 50 of them. And that they had prisoners. In his mind he used the layout of their tracks to distinguish their riding patterns. Riding three by three with a pair of ox-driven wagons behind, most likely for their loot and slaves. Olek had no idea what he could do to stop the small force on his own, but his heart burned with the desire to spill blood and avenge his young son.

Glancing through the trees Olek saw he what he was looking for; a small overhang, big enough for both himself and his mount to shelter in. He pushed thoughts of blood and murder from his mind as best he could and dismounted.

From his pack he brushed down the horse, slung a nose bag over it's head and laid a blanket across the beasts huge back. Tending to himself, he realised that a fire would be impossible, everything was wet and cold and an overexertion would be the death of him. He settled an extra woolen cloak around his shoulders and helped himself to a few strips of dried beef from his pouch. His axe rested against the rock at arms length and Olek sat back and closed his eyes, eating mechanically and welcoming the reassuring twinge of cold in his bones.

Out here, in the wilds, cold was life. The feeling of it gnawing at you was positive. It was only when a man felt warm and comfortable in this inhospitible land that he would be in trouble. Olek finished his meal and watched his breath steam in the night air, his thoughts returning to his son. With a heavy heart and grim determination in his mind, sleep took him.

I'm really digging what everyone is doing so far. I'm kind of losing myself in this entire world you guys have set up.

Anyway, to those of you travelling to Athens; I'm thirsting for some interaction already. Are you guys planning on going to Athens, or someplace outside of Athens?

Also, is Athens still crawling with undead, or have all of them started spreading?

Everything looks good, so you're approved, Optikal.

I'm putting up an app soon.
Right on. Glad to have you aboard, Harl.

Rothgar is currently around the outskirts of the city and will be entering the ruins in my next post. It's been a month since the destruction of Athens, so I'd say it's a safe bet that the undead have already started to spread out into the countryside and possibly even to other city states.
