How was the sound design, in particular Godzilla's roar?
Fantastic, in terms of technical wizardry and the movie's ambiance and aesthetic, it's like immaculate. This is Edwards second movie only and it's a giant like $200 million movie. His last film was half a million, as impressive as that was, I mean...so impressed with his abilities and what he pulled off here.

That said, I just think he was not as focused on his actors and their performances. Now to be clear, it's not like Attack of the Clones awkward, but the performances are kinda on the flat side.

Godzilla's roar sounds awesome.

Saw the movie on a huge IMAX screen with state of the art projection. Everything looked and sounded like nigh-perfect.

Here is a review from a big movie magazine from Germany ( in German):

http://www.cinema.de/film/godzilla,5403224.html

It's very positive, says that Edwards is now playing in the topleague of directors. Effects are awesome. Acting was okay.
only complaints: two much 3d night shots and two much "childsaving scenes" (?).

Overall: great movie

And honestly in terms of delivering the overall package, I got to be honest, I believe I preferred Pacific Rim more. I think Pacific Rim had a better sense of what it wanted to be and delivered better from that perspective.

So what they were selling wasn't exactly you were in for? I can see that happening for some people. PacRim was pretty much sold on being this colorful, fun summer blockbuster.

Yeah I plan on seeing it again. I'd recommend this is definitely something you have to see in the theaters at least once just because that's the way to fully appreciate all the Godzilla visuals.

Sort of like Smaug in 48fps for Hobbit.

I'm not sure I would go that far. I think the filmmakers made some missteps that keeps the movie from being truly great. Now I think it's good and at best very good just not great.

But...to each his own.

There parts of the movie I think were really inspired that really took me back to like classic Spielberg where it was like, "Wow I feel like I'm watching Jurassic Park." Other parts that were frustrating like, "ah c'mon."

Speaking of Smaug. Who is the better looking creature? Which one was visually more impressive to you?

Hmm, that's a very good question. Since I saw Hobbit twice in a couple different premium formats, I'd like to see Godzilla again before I decide.

I haven't been so excited to see a monster on film since Smaug. I really cannot ****ing waitttttt :)

I'm kind of weirded out by when Gareth Edwards said that Godzilla is "the punishment we deserve" in this movie.

Going by the movie, that's not really the case with Godzilla at all here.

I get the feeling that there's been a few plot points and stuff cut, such as the edited mine disaster scene, which might have painted the monsters in a more sinister light. Either that or he's got ideas for a potential sequel.

The reviews don't seem as excited as i thought they would, the average ratings are only 7.9, but oh well, i just hope that in the end it delivers.

I wasn't expected this movie to be perfect, but I am glad it is getting positive reviews. I wonder when "top critic" Michael Phillips is going to post his reviews, he said on twitter he liked the movie.

It's always gonna have mixed reviews because you have the "only there for Godzilla" phenomenon. The parts with downtime will be viewed as dull even if they are needed to move the story.

The only thing I care about is that this, movie seems like it will make godzilla fans really happy :) can't wait!

One thing I am excited to be hearing from reviews is that Godzilla has a personality. Was afraid he'd just be a walking set piece.

I think fans expect too much from critics. It's getting decent to good reviews so far. If it can keep up those sort of reviews that is good.

Faraci has an interesting note on the tone and content of the film.

Early marketing for Godzilla positioned it as grim, a dark meditation on the destruction that would be caused by such a gargantua run amok. That isn’t the film; it’s serious-minded, but not at the expense of fun. A young boy who is separated from his parents in an early attack finds himself returned to them, a stark contrast to images from the 1954 film, where we see a woman cradling her dead child in a hospital hallway. The destruction has weight, but not so much that it makes you feel bad for watching. And Godzilla’s advance towards the US is slow enough that much of San Francisco is safely evacuated before he gets there, allowing us to stomp our cake and eat it too.

That actually sounds like a fair balance.

How is the soundtrack? Any similarities with the original Godzilla theme?

Time to escape them spoilers, see you after the 16!!!!
