I've scanned quite a few of the reviews most of them seemed pretty postive to me. It's still early but that's decently encouraging.

I actually had no idea until a few days ago that Taylor-Johnson was British, btw.

I found about that too, about a year after Kick Ass came out on DVD. It surprised me too. There are few OS actors that do surprise me that they are not Americans when I first discover them. Another was Colin Farrell, that guy surprised me totally when he spoke in his native tongue.

It's hard to get a sense of what to expect for Aaron Taylor-Johnson. It's like every other review calls him likable and sympathetic, and the others call him wooden.

I think it all depends on what he's given. Elizabeth Olsen has shown herself to be very talented, and it sounds like she's totally wasted here.

I'm starting to wonder if it's actually possible to make a good human story in a Godzilla film. I hear comparisons to Jaws, and Jurassic Park, but in those films, the human characters actually took on the monsters. There is a battle between man and nature. Here......mankind is totally powerless in comparison to these creatures, to the point where they just become bystanders. I guess the people in this new franchise could end up building Mechagodzilla, but I really don't see that happening.

There was apparently a lot more to Olson's role as written, but I've heard for a while now that shooting her scenes didn't go well for whatever reason.

Have many reviews commented on the scariness? Just looking at the trailers it looks like it has many jumpy scenes.

Actually, it was one of the first reviews posted here, or Devin's but it mentioned there are no jump scares.

He's decent in Kick Ass but not the best thing I'd probably place him as the weakest of the 5 main cast (though still good). So far though in trailers most of his shots I presume are reaction shots and he doesn't seem too emotive.
He's not.

Now this is just my guess here, but I think it could merely be Edwards' inexperience getting the better of him. Hence Watanabe's goofy bewildered look he adopts a lot, and Taylor-Johnson being such a weak bland lead.

Keep in mind this is only his second film and it's on a huge budget and he has a ton more responsibilities. Last movie was a low-budget indy he made for half a million dollars. It's a different beast.

Can't believe we are finally at release week! Can't freaking wait for thursday, wiping my buttocks with reviews ,all I cared about is that they nailed godzilla and did him justice. seems they succeeded in that regard, I've had a feeling the human aspect would be OK at best since first full trailer but I'm just happy we are getting a good godzilla flick!

LOL, 5 out of 5 from TOHO Kingdom. Big surprise there.

Yeah that was always going to be a 5 out of 5, 1 out of 5, best/worst scenario. Regarless of the number he ultimately gave though, the review is actually quite balanced. He has some concerns but they didn't drag the film down for him.

Im a bit worried about the reviews saying the human characters are not too engaging and interesting. Jaws, JP, and Alien were awesome even with the limited screen time for its creatures because the even human scenes were great. Hopefully those reviews are wrong.

I was never expecting to see 5 stars across the board. I'm planning on everything to range from 3 to 5 because this is still a Godzilla movie. I was never expecting an Oscar nom or anything. I'm sure I'll enjoy the movie for exactly what it is.

Admit that some of you were when you were reading about those Nerdist and Alamo Drafthouse footage screenings ;) .

If some have problems with Aaron Johnson's performance, it probably has more to do with the script than him (haven't seen the movie yet). It seems not a lot of you here are familiar with his work outside of Kick-Ass, but he's proven himself repeatedly to be extremely talented.

Nowhere Boy? Stellar
Kick-Ass 1 & 2? Great performances
Albert Nobbs? Great
Savages? Completely different register and he nails it
Anna Karenina? Haven't read the book but thought he did a very nice job

What fascinates me is how much range he has plus how he can just morph into another character, he looks like a kid in Kick-Ass, in Savages, he just feels completely different, same in Nobbs or whatever.

Just saying, his character is like the typical, generic soldier guy (or simply guy) who has to find his way back to his family, relatable for the audience, not much else. It's not like every review is trashing him either, you've got those saying he's a sympathetic & likable & relatable lead, and others saying he's wooden, which is like the laziest overused adjective used to qualify a performance when the actor is just not doing Jim Carrey facial expressions every 5 minutes.

From the reviews Godzilla appears to be consciously fighting for humanity rather than the mindless beast of nature which the trailers portrayed. I wonder if this lessens the dramatization of Godzilla in any way.

No idea if anyone here follows schmoes know on youtube but they said their review would be filming today.

Boy, this is the TASM2 threads all over again. Or any other movie's come release time, for that matter. This and TASM2 are the first movies in which I've stayed tuned for reviews and fan reactions and stuff... usually I completely skip this part. For good reason. :oldrazz:

The only difference here I've yet to see anyone in this thread go out of they're way to try and prove the negative reviewers wrong or attack anyone who agreed with them

But it is early days
