From what we've seen so far with trailers and what not it would have to be a massive cluster**** in the rest of the movie to make it close to bad. Overall reception to every single thing they've put out has been almost totally positive and the only whining I've heard from anybody was that the body was too bulky (which makes sense when going for a bit more realistic) or that they wanted a known monster (which they couldn't do due to rights).

People on neogaf have been whining about:

Independence day dog
Crappy cgi
Kid on train
Kid and father escaping from the tsunami at the last second
The score
Tone from the clip doesn't match the trailers
Emmerich vibe from the clip

Gaf is troll central though so......yeah.

My interview with screenwriter Max Borenstein is likely happening in the next week or so.

I honestly wonder how you make a sequel to a film like this, that doesn't either feel like a retread, or just not that special. How do you get a Empire or TDK when the first film is all about the awe and will feature monster on monster violence.

Have you seen Monsters? The concept of that big ass wall separating the monsters from the States seems very similar to the ideas Edwards was discussing when he mentioned Destroy All Monsters and the Monster Island concept. The idea of humanity trying to adjust to these new lifeforms existing in the world with them.

Hmmm... Depending on how this film turns out a sequel could explore some of the ideas of a world having to get used to "monsters" that PACIFIC RIM just blew right by.

Yeah there's some genuinely interesting stuff that you could really sink your teeth into. The realism element behind the Kaiji seems like it could be used to pose some interesting questions.

For Zod's sake think of the repercussions of an attack by a huge biological creature(s) on the West coast of North America, and the world knows, this thing could come back. California (L.A., San Fran, San Diego) would see a huge population shift. What would that do to the USA? Would the cost of shipping go up because of insurance? How would that affect the global economy? Again, stuff that is in PAC RIM, but it's blink and you'll miss it, unless you went through the Blu-Ray special features.

Box Office: 'Godzilla' Roars in Early Tracking
The Legendary Pictures and Warner Bros. tentpole hopes to launch a studio franchise
Pamela McClintock said:
May tentpole Godzilla came on tracking Thursday with impressive strength and should stomp past $60 million in its North American debut. More bullish box-office observers believe it could clear $70 million.

The movie, hoping to finally launch a Hollywood studio franchise headlined by the giant lizard, could be a defining moment for Legendary Pictures, which spearheaded the $160 million reboot. Legendary co-financed 75 percent of Godzilla, with Warner Bros. putting up the rest of the money.

Godzilla opens in North American theaters on May 16. It makes its international assault at the same time. Box-office observers believe Godzilla will have even more strength overseas.

Here's a question no one has asked: when Godzilla 2 comes to surface in development, with Legendary and WB splitting, will Legendary make it with Universal now? Or will it stay with WB as a WB franchise?

Legendary...I'm pretty sure that's the case.

I ask because, Legendary has Godzilla, and if that's still the case after the 2014 release, and they're with Universal; Universal has King Kong.

...y'know...

"wink" "wink"

Just FYI, even though Legendary is now with Universal, I think they will still have some WB co-productions coming up regardless.

Not sure how the deal with Godzilla is coming up, but it might have to stay with WB because it's co-production. Not sure how the rights are distributed in the US.

Didn't Legendary fit three-quarters of the bill for this?

Legendary and WB still have co-productions coming out because they were done before the split. But I'm pretty sure I read somewhere after that they are done, so any Godzilla sequels will be with Legendary. Unless for some reason they want to allow WB back in. This same thing applies to any future Pacific Rim films that might happen.

One of the forefront questions would be which island would you contain them on, and how would you convince the potential country whose jurisdiction it would fall under? Even then neighboring countries might not want something like that near them especially since, in a figurative sense, it's paramount to having huge amounts of nuclear waste dumped on your doorstep.

Yeah there could be a strong political element to it. Godzilla 85 had that cold war connection with the radiation and the threat of war, stuff like that could be played around with and expanded upon so that there's more meat on the bones rather than simply having one Kaiji become a threat and Godzilla stopping it.

It would probably stay with Legendary Pictures, but that is pure speculation on my part.

That ruined city they've shown in the trailers would be a great ground zero for Monster Island.

Speaking of quarantined zones, some of the the destruction shots remind me of the Red Zone from Prototype 2.

The post above mentioning possibly seeing Godzilla face off against King Kong again just gave me goosebumps at the thought of seeing those two together with modern special effects.

If these sequels are not titled Godzilla vs. *insert whoever* I shall boycott. None of that Godzilla 2 ****.
