Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019) - Part 1

I typically like to go see a movie prior to reading any consensus. Decide after you watch it :yay:

Oh, I have pre-booked my tickets long ago. I am seeing no matter what and I am quite hyped.

But 46% on RT doesn't sound too encouraging.

Here's one from CNN:
'Godzilla: King of the Monsters' review: Godzilla's return brings more smoke than fire - CNN

I'm starting to see a pattern here, that they wanted the return of 2014 Godzilla with more monsters, but with the same thing in the end. In this, we get a traditional Godzilla film, and they're rejecting it. That's kinda...sad.

I don't read reviews before seeing a film anymore since they seem to think spoiling is a part of the job now, but what do you mean? Is it the tone, or the lack of action that they want back?

Personally i couldn't care less about the human characters.
It was pretty much the same with Godzilla 2014. I just want some crazy monster battles in G:KTOM. The plot can be paper thin with this one as long as there is some cool monster v monster stuff and it looks like that from the trailers... so i'm holding out hope.

I am all about that monster v monster action as well, but if nothing else is on point and doesn't glue the film together, aren't we going to see a bunch of edited, empty action scenes with nothing else worth in the film?

That's the risk. I guess we have to see it for ourselves.

Both.

Its basically "give us Godzilla 2014 back with the new monsters because that movie was Godzilla done right". I love Godzilla 2014, but its telling me that KOTM IS Godzilla in the traditional sense, and these guys don't want that.

The monsters are too darkly shot and edited too frenetically as if he’s trying to hide something. Plus, it takes too long to get to them.

The last few months have taught me to not trust critics too much, but this bit from the EW review has me a bit worried. The trailers didn't give me the impression that this would be the case.

Well I'm still quite excited for this, especially after reading Joblo's review where they gave it a 9/10. I wasn't expecting the human stuff to be great, but they seemed to like it anyways, and they also make it pretty clear that it is definitely about the monsters and in that respect delivers exactly what you wanted which is more than enough for me.

Interesting. I really really like Godzilla 2014 but at the same time I feel like you shouldn't go that route twice in a row, especially bringing in the other classic monsters. You kind of have to go the Alien to Aliens route (Big difference here being unlike those 1st 2 alien films, I'm not here for the humans). If you have them all for me then overwhelm me.

Speaking as someone who's seen the movie, I really don't get the complains these critics have against this. The problems that the 2014 movie are not present here, so WTF's their problem?

I think they just aren't into the genre. Even some people who loved it said it definitely wouldn't be for everyone.

The average rating also really rebounded. It is not quite so dire as the initial batch hinted. It is still early though. So, hold on for a wild ride, as I expect it to be very mixed.

But as always, RT is a guideline. I have enjoyed many rotten movies. Hell, Venom was my second favorite superhero movie of 2018.

I am curious. What has happened in the last few months to make you not trust critics?

The only character I MAYBE could see some criticism leveled against is Charles Dance's character. His motivations aren't explained, but it's because it's very clear (especially post-credits) they're setting him up as a recurring villain or at least as the main human villain in Kong Vs. Godzilla.

I actually enjoyed the Hellboy reboot myself, on that note.

Great, now I need to reevaluate all your postings in the political and Star Wars sections. :o
