Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019) - Part 1

One day technology will make daytime Kaiju goddness budget friendly.
Let us all hope.

I think it is less that, and more that night time scenes are just popular in general with kaiju films. I mean, most of the Heisei films had night time battles. (Though, that is set night, not actual darkness) I think a lot of it had to do that the beam effects popped more against the dark background. Even looking at Pacific Rim, the neon effects of the kaiju wouldn't have popped as much during the day. With a lot of the designs incorporating glowing effects, it isn't too surprising they want it dark to highlight them.

But, I'm not a huge fan of the big grey background they seem to have went with. Oh well, lets catch this in Imax.

Personally speaking...I'm OK with that here. I just want to see some ungodly monster action.

Exactly there’s certain times when just big spectacle is not a bad thing. At least that’s how I feel. I just wanna have some fun like I said. Badass monster fights and beautiful cinematography and a kickass score.

Just go full on cheese with it from now on. Bring on the Xiliens!

Actually, when I saw Millie Bobby Brown in the trailers, I thought the movie was just going to go for it and introduce psychic links to monsters, making her the Miki Saegusa of the Monsterverse. Who knows, maybe if they had instead dropped in aliens, princess assassination attempts, and monster psychics, the critics actually give more favorable reviews for KOTM. Still, that would be a very tough sell to a general audience dropping in those elements cold turkey.

Just did the A-List thing for tomorrow night, activated that 5.00 reward to get some mozzarella sticks, and I am set.

The critical reception of this is alarming. I didn't like Godzilla 2014 and I thought Skull Island was okay but forgettable. I expected this one to be the best, but 43%, unless its cheesy ott fun okay but I don't know, I have to wait until Sunday. I am lowering my expectations now, like really low. 43% is a bad rating.

43%

  • Average Rating: 5.25/10

  • Fresh: 46
  • Rotten: 60

Have you also had this issue with the digital version? On my blu ray I have mess around with my settings to get it to show slightly more clear but I think on digital it seemed clearer, or maybe it's just my mind playing tricks with itself.
I've been mostly watching the digital copy this week on all the platforms that I have it on. (vudu, movies anywhere, youtube, iTunes). It gets pretty darn dark whenever Godzilla shows up, especially his 1st closeup. I remember the bluray being like that too. If the new film looks like it does in the trailers then I'll be fine, because it still looks a little brighter to me compared to how 2014 looked to me this week.

At this point, there is not going to be much movement.

Just came from seeing it.

Overall I enjoyed it. I can definitely tell where the criticisms are coming from (imo there are some things that Gareth Edwards did better with G'14), and the one about a lot of close-up shots of the monsters is accurate, though the action was mostly visible for me. Don't get the "too dark to see" comments, this is nowhere near G'14 Blu-Ray release levels of bad.

The monster action was mostly fun and the climax was terrific, so on what I was hoping the movie would deliver on, it did for me.

Gotta say though, the best scene in the movie imo did not involve any of the monsters and that honestly shocked me. Was not expecting that level of feels.

One of the reasons why i don't like Pacific Rim 2 nearly as well as the original is the look of the film. Especially the fights. I love the colors of the night fights.

Shout-out to Ken Watanabe 'cause while he only had a slightly bigger role here than the original, I feel like his performance was much stronger. And I was one of the few people who liked Serizawa in the first movie.

It is a thing

Blu-ray: Godzilla 3D (Warner Bros.)

Godzilla 2014 took a long time to get to theaters and it took quite a lot of work to not only design the creatures but the general look of the film. Lighting ,cinematography, detail, color timing are all important aspects of this film and they have all been robbed of their glory due to a transfer that not only darkens the film, it mutes the color and lacks detail seen not only in theaters but in trailers and even the special features on the Blu-Ray disk. The transfer is something that never should have been let out the door and it's a disservice to the work of everyone involved in creating and marketing the film.

This is super interesting, I only watched the 3D version, I'll have to check out the blu ray version and compare it to the 3D version and see if there is a big difference, that's a real shame.

I bet 2014 will see a 4K release when KotM comes out on blu ray and such.

I collect every Godzilla blu rays I hope some one gets the rights to some of the toho movies that haven't had releases yet. I check every once in a while

The original Mothra solo movie is getting a release soon I pre ordered it.

The hot rumor is we may get a Criterion box set containing all the Showa films in one set, but the rights to the ones that Kraken released have to revert so they can obtain those ones as well. The Classic Media DVD released Showa films are already available on the Criterion Channel, so it sort of lends weight to the rumors.

Instant double dip for any of the ones I own.

Return of Godzilla blu-ray is my prized possession. I adore that movie. Godzilla 1985 was my favorite as a kid and I had never watched the original version of it.

I am a Heisei era fan mainly, and I am happy to have all of them. Return of Godzilla is one of my favorite films in the series, but I am probably happiest I have Godzilla vs Biollante not so much due to its quality (I actually like Return of Godzilla more), but more so due to how insanely rare that movie is at this point. That movie always goes OOP quickly, so I am glad I got the Blu Ray when I did last time.
