Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019) - Part 1

Eh... They were just a strange design. Less origami and more like living geometric shapes.

Haha yeah I could see that. A cross between origami and those wooden triangles kids play with in preschool.

For those knowledgeable when in the next year do you suppose we get a look at tie in merch and toys?

Toy Fair most likely, which is in February 2019. They could get leaked sooner, always happens with big movies like these. Usually tie in merchandise starts up to 2-3 months in advance

So there's a good chance we see the Kaiju/Titans in toy form before they unveil them in TV spots and trailers.

Oh yeah, look back on all the times it's happened for MCU movies. I'd say the odds are like 75% possible.

I thought the MUTOs were pretty good antagonists, personally.

I agree. While it's a criticism of mine that the 2014 film felt more like a movie about them than Godzilla, I still can't ignore that they were the best original monster since probably Destroyah. Everything down to their design, the concept, even to their morbidly sweet union in SF, made them very compelling foes to Godzilla. I'm hoping eventually they will be considered as one of the cult upper tier monsters like similar to Anguirus.

Shame he couldn't handle the human characters well.:o

To be fair, how many truly compelling human characters have there been in Godzilla films outside of the Showa era? I can only really think of Akane from Godzilla x Mechagodzilla and Miki Saegusa from the Heisei era.

Godzilla 2014 was pretty much par for the course on the human characters, which is the weakest aspect of a large percentage of these movies.

Godzilla Final Wars practically had a Power Rangers story as the b-plot.

My understanding is that Gareth took that aspect and weakened it further by making the characters and their stories a slog to sit through.

They really flubbed by killing Cranston so fast.

The only compelling human in the movie gets such a throwaway exit.

I think if Johnson had been a more textured and compelling character, or at least given more in his performance that wouldn't have mattered as much. I actually dug the sort of Perils Of Penelope thing he had where he was just trying to get back home and at every step along the way he kept bumping into a Kaiju situation. But he himself was just so dull.

I had heard Gareth's original choice was Scoot McNairy. Cavill's name was punted around too.

Johnson going super minimal didn't help none but the character also wasn't given a lot for any actor to work with. Like they didn't even give him any scene where he really reckoned with the death of his father.

This is why this trailer really worked for me to get me excited since it would appear they will delve into Vera and Millie's characters' relationship and give that aspect some focus.

I'm not blaming Johnson for that mess of a performance though, I mean, we're talking about a movie that made Sally Hawpkins and Ken Watanabe seem just as dull. When it comes to performance and character, Cranston was the exception in that movie, not the rule.

I just want to belatedly add that trailer is a thing of beauty. Whoever came up with Claire de Lune for the trailer deserves a raise, because that combine with the visuals of what I suspect is each of the monsters' intro looks like real art. Who knew?

I love that at SDCC, the two best trailers had nothing to (directly) do with comics. Forget Aquaman and Shazam. Glass and especially Godzilla are the real events by the looks of it.

With you there. That Godzilla trailer was downright majestic.

Okay, but shouldn’t they TRY to make the humans compelling? I get that people are going to these movies to see the monsters but the majority of screen time and all of the dialogue is handled by live actors, so it would help if they weren’t a bore to watch. What’s a real shame about G2014 is that they squandered a great cast. So many good actors in boring and pointless roles that practically anyone could have played. Cranston was the only person I cared about so of course they killed him in the first act.

So, where's Godzilla going then? The tracking bit on the Monarch Sciences site show him on his travels after being at SDCC, so where's he off now then? :)

Hitting the gym. He's gonna train Balboa style for his match against Kong.

Will he climb to the moon yelling “Kooooong!” once he reaches it.
