Michael Dougherty Says His ‘Godzilla: King of the Monsters’ Is to ‘Godzilla’ as ‘Aliens’ Is to ‘Alien’

Edwards’ Godzilla has been described as slow burn, where the other Godzilla films have been more action packed.

How would you describe your Godzilla?

DOUGHERTY: Well, I hesitate to say it, but I would call it the Aliens to Gareth’s Alien. So it’s a bit more on an ensemble film. Whereas the first movie was really about Brody’s character kind of weaving his way through that adventure and Monarch kind of was the backdrop for that. Here Monarch is the focus, because I find that concept really fascinating. The idea that there is a secret agency that tracks giant monsters – that is a dream come true for me too. I think if the government said to me, ‘Tomorrow you have to fake your own death and abandon every one you know to go hunt the paranormal,’ I would be gone in a heartbeat.

The final Easter Egg was one that Dougherty seemed shocked we picked out: Get Out's Bradley Whitford plays an on-point homage to misanthropic genius Rick Sanchez! Whitford and his free-standing silver hair play Dr. Rick Stanton, a salty scientist who is undeniably brilliant but unbelievably brutal on his colleagues. In a big ensemble scene, we watched him scold a room full of scientists and soldiers for their naiveté about the dangers of these titans, practically spitting about how a newfound larva will grow "bigger and meaner." When I presented my theory with the similarities: the hair, the attitude, first name, the initials, Dougherty confessed with a grin, "He drinks a lot too!"

Oddly enough... I do want another trailer. If for noting else than I would like to see what the human element of the story is about, conflicts, agendas etc.

Yes... I know the script is out there to be read and there are leaks yadda-yadda. I'm old school though. I don't really seek that stuff out. In terms of the legitimate marketing I just would like a better handle on how the Monarch characters and Millie Bobbie Brown fit into this battle of the Titans. Mostly because I think with this cast and what was shown in the trailers that it could be good meaty dramatic stuff rather than just filler between monster fights.

Godzilla 2014 gets a lot of **** sometimes, and it does have flaws (principally boring human characters and not enough Godzilla), but damn I love this scene (actually most of the actual monster scenes). Even here some people complain it limits the actual view of Godzilla, but I actually love the way it gives almost this docudrama view of Godzilla from the perspectives of the people underfoot, to me it makes it feel more "real". And Gareth Edwards does such a good job blending the two together. As a childhood Godzilla fan, scenes like this are just what I wanted from a faithful big-budget Godzilla movie. I hope King of the Monsters doesn't completely abandon this approach in favor of bigger spectacle and heavier monster action.
