Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019) - Part 1

Anyway, seems like people who liked G14 and KSI and disliked this are people who aren't fans of the Toho approach to this movie.

I hate to say this, but seeing as this movie embraces the Toho elements of Godzilla, in terms of weak plots and Monsters being the stars, it seems this movie was made FOR Godzilla fans and not the GA.

Don't want to sound smug, but it seems a lot of the negatives don't necessarily get classic Godzilla, and are measuring this movie based off of today's standards and it's technical execution, rather than embracing it for what it is. A film to get Godzilla and monsters to fight.

Frankly I think the rating and percentage is fine for a film like this. It's a knock down drag out monsterfest. An average reception (50% - 60%) from critics is fine. Even an average film can be worth seeing if it's got something in it that you're interested in.

I get like something when the majority doesn't. I have lived through that. But this isn't a "they don't get" it thing. Measuring movie based on it's general quality as a movie isn't not getting it. Sometimes things are niche because while we love them, they don't necessarily work that well outside of that niche fandom.

Also I think it is important to say that you can make a film for the fans, that works beyond that. We have seen it quite a few times. It just takes a lot of effort, a lot of talent and the right choices from on high.

I have no idea if I will enjoy this or not. But the idea that a movie's genre suddenly means it getting certain "types" of reviews is an a-okay thing is why a lot of studios give us crappy genre flicks and not John Wick. Why for so many years superhero flicks were more likely then not to be garbage. Why something like Sonic got signed off on.

I generally find Rotten Tomatoes reliable, but I'm not so sure in the case of a franchise like this. The only legitimately great one from a typical film standpoint was the 1954 original, in my opinion. I'm more interested in seeing what the fans are saying and diehards like James Rolfe.

I think there’s two ways you can go about Godzilla, you either make it an allegorical film where the monsters are representative of some larger issue like the original did with nuclear weapons, GMK did with World War 2, Shin Godzilla did with pollution and G14 tried to do with environmental disasters, or you go all out and make it a big Sci-Fi/Superheroesque series where the monsters are essentially the protagonists with the humans serving as exposition to provide context.

Seems like this is the latter, and I’m honestly very ok with that. I’d honestly prefer it to the take 2014 film did where it tried to be more intelligent than it was. So...yeah if the human plot is B movie material, but it delivers on the Kaiju? I’m all in for that.

Would seem like a mildly brain-less thing to do to spend big $$$ on a CGI blockbuster with only a tiny contingent of viewers in mind. A happier medium is always necessary.

But then again, good chance I was always going to enjoy this movie. I enjoyed Uprising, so I guess I have low standards for kaiju stuff.

Agreed. The original Japanese film is probably one of my 10 favorite films, but Godzilla films are very hit and miss in general. Some are quite good movies all around, and others are mindless schlock. I think having some fun and showcasing the monsters more this time around is probably wise. Perhaps they went to the other extreme from the 2014 version. Reviews seem to hint at that. But I at the end of the day want to see Godzilla fight a three headed dragon. If they deliver on that, I am sure I will at least enjoy it. We have never really gotten a Godzilla film on this scale with this level of advanced effects showcasing the monster action, so that is already a plus in its corner

This is all good. But I don't think that then translates into the critics are wrong just because 2 hours of noise surrounding a few monster fights doesn't agree with them. Especially as it seems we have been given another film where it is hard to see a lot of it.

Some guy is blaming us for not thinking the movie wouldn't be bad because of Dougherty. What was so stupid about his comment is that, not only did he use Treat R Treat and Krampus, whose RT's score were high, but he used Superman Returns, which he wrote but didn't direct, and X3 and X-Men: Apocalypse, both films HE HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH!

Talk about talking out of your butt and not having any credibility.

Krampus is a modern classic. Goes on the short list of legitimately funny horror comedies that are still real horror movies. A movie that deserves to be compared to Gremlins.

This is the one movie series where all of my high falutin film buffy nonsense breaks down. Godzilla is hardwired directly into who I was as a kid, damnit. If that Bear McCreary track is how the movie starts, that's it, I'm in!
