The visuals and the action in PR are just astounding... And everywhere else I just feel it's all over the map. Is it being an irony filled near satire? Is it being squared jawed and serious? Now... Bringing those tones and vibes together isn't totally impossible. It can work but in PR it came together rather tin eared to me. They didn't blend they sort of jutted up against one another, often in the same scene.I see other people mentioning Pacific Rim in here. I am going to be honest: GDT is likely one of my top 5-10 favorite filmmakers. I love the man's work. But that said, I would actually say I enjoyed 2014 Godzilla more than Pacific Rim. I've never thought Pacific Rim was a particularly strong film. I like the monster action, the lighting, etc. But it doesn't really offer me much else. 2014 Godzilla at least had Cranston and I think it worked better for what it was going for stylistically.
I am sure many will argue with me on this opinion, but it is my opinion.
Does it want to stradle lines like Ghostbusters or Men In Black? If it's supposed to ape a mecha anime with a cast of pilots with colorful and over the top styles and backgrounds why do those types of characters in the film get so little play? And why, why, WHY did I have to find out incredibly important back story information about central characters by reading information contained in the Blu-Ray Extras?!!
