It sucks to see how this movie's box-office turned out, because I want more of these movies. I hope it has decent legs, but even if it somehow manages to fall less than 60% this weekend its still going to have trouble crossing $150M domestic which is just sad. The fact that it could end up making less than $400M WW isn't very encouraging either, especially since these big budget monster movies have relied heavily on the OS boxoffice in the past. This franchise might be done for a while after GvK, especially if that one fails to take off.

Ehhhh, I think you're way too hopeful on this. Jurassic World's success was due to how beloved and nostalgic Jurassic Park is as a movie. You can't say the same about Avatar because most of the general audience has forgotten it, plus it just didn't have likable and memorable characters like JP did (Jeff Goldblum hello).

Realistically speaking, there's no way Avatar 2 is gonna make the same bank as the first one, much less surpass it. Doesn't mean it's gonna bomb, but it's not something people have been clamoring for.

But the difference is we’ve been given several movies in the Jurassic franchise before JW, so there was an audience for it to make a billion.

But I’m also not going to count out James Cameron’s black magic. They’ll find a way to spin this sequel into a moneymaker.

OT: People mentioning The Rock a few pages back made me remember that Rampage was on HBO. I just checked it out. While it wasn't good and was pretty stupid...I can't even lie I liked the climax of that movie over the climax in either Godzilla film. Maybe just because gorillas are my favorite animal, but those last 20 mins of Rampage delivered on monster action.
For sure both Godzillas are better though. But that's the kinda monster action I like

The first half of that film is a bit of a rough watch but I was suprised by how much I enjoyed everything in Chicago. All around that movie was much more competenat than expected, especially after not enjoying San Andreas from the same director.

Agreed. James Cameron movies are anomalies. They don’t behave like normal movies. Every week the boxoffice number grows and stays steady. Avatar was #1 for weeks on end. Majority of people have short memories. The man is a master storyteller

Even if they don't continue past Godzilla vs Kong, then it's really ok to me. Because that was the plan in the first place. The licensing agreement ends after GvsK so it's whatever to me.

I'd love more, but I'll be happy with what we get. I just wish KOTM is what the 2014 Godzilla could have been.

Monarch should have just been Serizawa, Graham, Stanton and Chen. Sam was pointless.

I think people forget the first did 2bil overseas. Just overseas. Even if it makes half of that, it WW, that is a great success.

I think about this a lot. With as much as the first film made, even in a near worst case scenario in which each film in the series only make half what the film before it grossed, you'd still be talking about the third film doing nearly 700 million, the 4th over 350. And that's in a disaster scenario.

To this day I still don't understand what drove that machine to 2.7 billion +. The FX aren't going to catch people by surprise this time - I say 1.4 billion max.

I also don't care if this under preforms to a point. I mean, obviously I want them to make more of them in this series, but either way we're at least getting Godzilla vs Kong. There is always a shot that outperforms expectation and makes up for this one. But either way, I loved this movie. Under performing or not.

Personally, I dunno how anyone can view this franchise thru a constructive lens and honestly say it has legs to the point of being fleshed out over many films, ESPECIALLY with the disregard they treat their human characters.

To this day I still don't understand what drove that machine to 2.7 billion +. The FX aren't going to catch people by surprise this time - I say 1.4 billion max.

Part of it was the financial position of the United States at the time. The financial crisis caused the dollar to get weaker, which in part allowed such a large result in the foreign market. Make no doubt, it still did gangbusters overseas, but the weak dollar at the time help inflate that number a bit compared to recent movies.

And really, it was a theatrical experience. That encouraged 3D, with the surcharge.

But, you bet against Cameron at your own risk. The man seems to be able to tap into the zeitgeist at the right moment.

Saw this today and it delivered exactly what I expected. Who cares about the human characters with this kind of movie? I went to see it for Godzilla and a whole bunch of other monsters fighting each other and that's exactly what we got!

The only things that particularly bothered me were: (1) Bear McCreary's killer music wasn't very audible throughout the movie and tended to get buried in the sound mix which was disappointing (I'd heard the tracks on YouTube before going to see the movie), and (2) It was mentioned in the movie that there were 17 monsters (!) and we only saw several of them in the movie. Wanted to see all of them!

Overall yeah the movie could've been shot & directed better, and most of the really great shots were already in the trailers. But it delivered tons of monster action which was awesome. And that "My god...zilla!" line from the trailer was way funnier in the context of the movie. Wasn't seriously expecting it to be delivered that way in the actual movie, as I thought there'd be a cut between scenes, but I like how the movie had some moments of humor like that. All of the lines from the 2 guys who were basically there for comedy were just plain gold.

I also liked how certain scenes in the movie were pretty scary and basically like a horror movie—definitely owed a lot to Michael Dougherty's experience in the horror genre. That shot near the beginning of King Ghidorah flying towards the open cargo bay and getting close was like something out of a nightmare!

Btw, a question for the Godzilla fans:

This is turning into a James Cameron thread - but Titanic didn’t have the FX of Avatar and it became the highest grossing movie of all time...maybe because the characters were worth caring about? That’s Cameron’s forte.

KotM I cared more about the characters this time around. Mostly Eleven because I am a fan of stranger things and i think she did an ok job but a great job when compared to previous Kaiju human characters. Watanabe was great and I wish there were more human moments - not screen time- I mean those heart to heart moments the quiet moments where the human characters show growth and real genuine heart and not just being archetypes or stereotypes
