Godzilla vs Kong (2021)

OMG, I haven't seen any interviews but if they really said that...yikes. Like, did they even SEE KotM?!?!

[preps torch and pitchfork]
It really made me go "bruh" when I read this.

“The score is hyper-modern and the thematic material is also original, but it’s written in respect of the history of Kong and Godzilla,” Holkenborg tells me over a Zoom call. “When it comes to movies, Superman only dates back to ’78? While King Kong goes back to [1933] as a feature film. So I thought it was great to be mindful of that.” The composer, who worked as an assistant to Zimmer on Man of Steel (2013) before graduating to co-composer on Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016), and then becoming the lone musical mind behind Zack Snyder’s Justice League, notes that using Steiner’s King Kong theme or Ifukube’s exact Godzilla march would be no more appropriate here than putting John Williams’ beloved Superman music over Henry Cavill.

“John Williams’ Superman theme would not necessarily, in its original form, work in Man of Steel,” Holkenborg says, “because Man of Steel is a more melancholic, emotional storytelling instead of being so tongue in cheek. It’s not that type of Superman. It’s very similar with GodzillaThat music would not 1:1 work in a modern Godzilla movie. But it’s the idea that counts.”
I get the overall point with Superman and comic book characters, but this is really hard to argue when literally the Godzilla movie right before this one featured all kinds of classic themes :funny:

Godzilla is more akin to James Bond in the musical identity.

Ok I said it first as a joke, but now I'm legitimately wondering if no one sat him down to watch KotM. :funny:

There are culmination films and then there is Endgame. Spider-Fan has made the difference pretty apparent.

Got it. A culmination of culmination films.Or a culmination of an entire series. Still serves the same purpose as to wrap things up thus far. Makes absolutely no sense, but I read you guys loud and clear. Smh

I don’t know where else to go with this series. There aren’t any more major cities to destroy. We’ve had Ghidora and Kong. There’s no one left.

They’ve still got the aliens as a potential overarching antagonist to introduce, Destroyah too if they want a more personal conclusion for Godzilla’s arc.

My friend saw it tonight who's very much a general fan of movies and I'm not even sure he saw the other movies "connected" to this one but he really enjoyed it. Said he gave it a 9/10.

Universal owns a majority of the character rights. Like Godzilla, Legendary is licensing the character for these films and were given permission to use the character with WB for the sole reason of crossing over with Godzilla.

The King Kong stuff is very interesting, but quite the mess once you start looking into it. I'm pretty sure anyone can remake the book because the story is in public domain, and I think WB owns the rights to the original two movies.

Ok the difference with Marvel is, other than the characters that were still at different studios, Marvel had free reign to use all those characters in Avengers as much as they wanted. With Legendary and Godzilla and Monster-Verse, it's a bit trickier because they are licensing all those characters from different studios.

I'm not saying they can't make more, it will just depend on licensing and character rights deals and if they set something up TOHO is willing to go along with.

I watched it this afternoon with my nephew at his house with his HBO MAX. Not sure if it was the actual movie or the way they streamed it......but we cold hardly hear anyone talk. He worked with his TV's sound in many ways....wound up with the sound turned up pretty high. The music and sound effects were overpowering and could't make out most of what people said. So for me....the fights were good but couldn't make heads or tails of the story. Has anyone else had a problem like this?

Yeah, as much as I love the Monsterverse and Destroyah, given how things have played out so far, Destroyah will not have the impact it had in the original film. One thing I dislike about the Monsterverse is a lot of times, references are used just to be references. They should have named Serizawa Yamane, instead. And the Oxygen Destroyer is completely wasted.

Yeah I think the Oxygen Destroyer itself in the Monsterverse was really only used as potential set up the monster for down the line.

Highly doubtful, as they did not get Destroyah's rights.

Actually, I believe Dougherty confirmed that that was never intended to be a set up for Destroyah, but simply a reference to the original film.

I think we’re going to get it if the Godzilla side of the Monsterverse continues. Destroyah All Monsters has a nice ring to it.

I am glad actress got Stephanie McMahon's permission to use her voice

Saw it today, it was so much fun. Shun Oguri, what a babe

Not even close to done, lol. There are sooooooo many Kaiju still. Kong could have a sequel more directly in the Hollow Earth, they can do some form of adaptation of Destroy All Monsters, the Planet X invaders, Gigan, Destoryah, etc. Heck, even like I said before try and secure the rights to Gamera. Match him up with Godzilla or Kong. There are directions.

Yep, there were monsters to fight in Hollow Earth and Kong even had trouble with one of the them. Give us a Kong sequel with him conquering the hollow earth and earning the throne I would watch the hell out of it. Then give us Godzilla 3 and Kon 3, then do Destroy All Monsters as the ultimate culmination.

It wasn't as much for an issue for me on my home theater setup with surround sound, but I can confirm that this seems to be an issue with HBO Max and their recent new movie releases. Sound is too quiet overall, some dialogue hard to make out on a TV without proper surround sound attached. Noticed this with WW84, The Little Things, and Godzilla vs Kong. Not sure what the deal is.

Thats amazing! So this should def clear 400 mill right?

I think $400M is pretty much locked up with $500M being very much in play. This has been doing really well OS so far, especially in China and it helps that WOM has been pretty postive for it everywhere.

Damn I wonder if it could have hit $1B if it wasn't for Covid? I think so which would have been huge coming off the BO dissapointment KOTM was.

So would this movie be the first movie since the corona virus pandemic started to hit $500 million?

I read an article that they filmed 5 hours worth of footage. I'd be interested in seeing what was cut cause I definitely feel a lot of it was cut out because of the fear of it bombing, which it looks like it isn't, so I wonder if they'll do a WingardCut of the film that maybe fills in the blanks and rounds out the characters better.

I'd really love to know why the storm around Skull Island suddenly changed and wiped out the ecosystem there.

Wingard said this is basically the cut he wanted so don’t expect anything beyond deleted scenes as an extra. Sounds like most of it was Monarch stuff that slowed the pace down. Plus I doubt it’s any additional footage of G or KK since that means money for completed effects.
