Godzilla vs Kong (2021)

Fleshing out my argument, I think even despite the flaws you presented (which are very much valid), Gareth Edwards really knows how to shoot and construct a scene. Despite the cocktease nature of the Hawaii and the initial San Francisco scenes, the build-up is utterly fantastic and the HALO jump sequence still gives me goosebumps to this day.

There's definitely improvements to be made, but I think Gareth Edwards could very much adapt to the current tone of the Monsterverse.

Those are all beautifully shot, and the San Francisco bridge scene is just about a perfect Godzilla scene.

Also Godzilla's tail in the smoke, then his silhouette illuminated. Lots of great shots.

Edwards had the same great visual eye in Rogue One too.

Unpopular opinion, but I still want Gareth Edwards to return to this franchise. Despite the flaws, the strengths in Godzilla 2014 are really phenomenal and if he's just given a better writer, he can come up with something fantastic.

I guarantee you if Gareth had just given us a 3 minute fight scene at the airport and maybe a little more of a fight in SF before the halo jump scene then people's opinion of the film would be significantly higher I think, even if the human story stayed the same.

Oh yeah I agree with this 100%. I’ve always wondered what could’ve been if Gareth continued the MV. If the MV somehow gets like 3 more movies I want him to direct at least one more!

We were soooo close to this since the 2012 draft of the film had a bit of the Godzilla vs MUTO Hawaii fight (IIRC it only turned to a person blocking the TV when Godzilla first uses his atomic breath, clever idea) and there seems to be a deleted Godzilla vs airforce scene in Alcatraz before the MUTO appears in SF (which explains why there were jets in the sky in the first place before the EMP happened) since there was some Godzilla on Alcatraz merch made and a bit of the scene was shown during SDCC 2014 when Mothra/Rodan/KG were teased for Godzilla 2.

The same 2012 draft also has Bryan Cranston’s character surviving so if they simply adapted that the reception really wouldve been way better.

Jordan Vogt-Roberts did a pretty fantastic job IMO bringing Kong to the bigscreen again and I always thought it would be interesting seeing that same colorful/vibrant style and energetic direction being brought to a Godzilla movie and I really do hope he makes another monster movie one of these days.

Yah actually I remember when we saw trailers that showed the MUTOs, I thought the first half of the film would be Godzilla appearing to be the antagonist, with the MUTOs being a kaiju unleashed by mankind to combat him only for it to backfire and thus Godzilla ends up "saving" humanity from them. Oddly enough this now seems like the plot in some form for Godzilla vs Kong.

I think it would’ve been fine if the teasing had been done only up until Godzilla’s first appearance. That first appearance should’ve extended into a full fight scene and then every monster scene afterwards should’ve been a full scene. The HALO jump is fantastic though, I will agree with that.

They don’t sell shark action figures. You go to Godzilla for Godzilla. Treating Godzilla like Jaws would be like making a Halloween movie where you only see Michael Myers at the end.

The Hawaii set piece is incredible, but we should have seen them fight.

It was an unfortunate choice to limit Godzilla's screentime, but not showing too much of the monster seemed to be a thing for a minute in certain films. They've gotten well away from that, thankfully.

Noticed the same. Every monster is moving way too quick. The sense of weight is gone (and I had just re-watched the previous 3 films in the MV, so I have everything fresh in my mind).

The MV has a serious problem with unnecessary deaths and character drops. Cranston joining Monarch would've been a fantastic arc.

I would've preferred we follow Ford's story as well with the military going forward. Aaron Taylor Johnson is an incredible actor and wasted in 2014. We could've followed his view of the military standpoint all the way up to GvK. Where Jackson Jr's character takes the torch.

GvK has the same problem with

Ren Serizawa dying. Could've had him stay behind leading Apex and rebuilding a Mecha Godzilla, possibly even Mecha-Ghidorah.

A poor choice to add another brilliant character and actor and kill them off so carelessly with no regard for the implications of lore and story.

We get no proper connection to Monarch or the humans with such a shifty roster. Just hoping going forward they show some level of structure or care.

Well you have to think about it this way: kong has always been fast so I don’t think we need an explanation on him. Godzilla is much more...agile and quick and this is because unlike in 2014 he’s been active, fighting some Titans, saving the world, etc. so he’s not like fresh from a nap, he’s been working out so he’s probably in peak physical form. But I get what you mean, it would’ve been nice to keep a slow lumbering Godzilla where with every step you can really feel it. And I I mean

From what I’ve seen Mechagodzilla probably does move a little too fast for a robot, I wouldn’t say it’s anything crazy crazy but yeah I would’ve liked to see him get toned down a bit

To be fair, from what I understand this kinda is Wingard. Bringing creative, colorful, and vibrant style to both Godzilla and Kong. Imagine having both Wingard and Roberts on a project. That would be insane!

As for the monster movement in GvK, I like what I’ve seen. I get that it might lose some of the weight and realism, but I think it adds a lot more fun and flavor to the fights. Having them move around like wrestlers is something I’m never gonna be upset about.

The F&F movies still generally do pretty well in the US. Not to mention, Bayformers started losing its appeal overseas.

As for the monster movement in GvK, I like what I’ve seen. I get that it might lose some of the weight and realism, but I think it adds a lot more fun and flavor to the fights. Having them move around like wrestlers is something I’m never gonna be upset about.

The CG still looks better than Justice League at least.
