Godzilla vs Kong (2021)

Oof. The vibe im getting in this thread isnt encouraging so far...are the fights themselves not even satisfying?

Don't get my post mixed up. The movie is good and I very much enjoyed it. The monster fights are awesome. I just don't think it was as good as KotM. I don't think any of the human work was any better here than KotM. Personally, I think people are too hard on the human characters in KotM. People sometimes act like it was awful or lesser than the other Monsterverse films, and I just don't see that. These movies all do the bare minimum with the humans. I don't think any of them stand out in that regard.

so u didn't like Kong in this? without spoiling it what were the glaring differences between this kong and kong directed bv Roberts or Jackson?

I did like him, just found him to be different, honestly almost like they were going for an 05 Kong vibe, but fell short of it.

Godzilla on the other hand is totally realized here. He is the same from 14 and Kotm, just evolved. He’s by far the more realized character. You can tell the director was more of a Godzilla fan.
I honestly didnt think the human characters in this were any better than any of the prior Monsterverse movies. All of them have have same issues. You can throw me a cute little and try and manipulate my emotions by telling me that she and Kong are connected, but she is not a developed character. No better than anyone in KotM. So I don't agree with that criticism of that movie.

Though Kong himself was better developed than on Skull Island.

Idk, I liked Kong better in skull island! He felt more of a guardian , protector. Here he is just like a big pet.

As far as the characters, to each his own. That guy with the glasses spouting corny line was just really annoying! They tried to cram to much into that film. You had the oxygen destroyer thrown in there out of no where and then top it off with burning Godzilla . You can tell the director was a fan, but he just threw to much in there. It reminded me of Snyder throwing all that into Batman bs Superman. Sometimes less is more.

I really liked team Kong in this, they were really good I thought, but again to each his own. I honestly liked team Kong better than Kong. I just wish that we could have got a director who could have gave us a legit Kong. But still a really good film. I will see it again tonight in Imax with my son, maybe it will grow on me. I just never felt I was watching the King from skull island.

This movie also had the annoying character though. I would agree that KotM one liner guy was maybe a tad more annoying, but conspiracy hand sanitizer guy is also an annoying one note character. These movies all have those similar character types. I don't see that much of a difference. I would agree KotM crammed in a lot, but the movie I also think was grander for it and had a more epic finale.

You also def enjoyed Skull Island more than me. That's a movie I overall liked, but didn't love. The movie's best character had off-screen development on a much more interesting story than what the actual film delivered, and I just felt the movie was serviceable. But def is you loved it, that's cool

I don’t necessarily think the human characters are better in GvK, but I think because half of them (Team Kong) are basically directly with Kong the whole time once the mission gets going that it’s more bearable because he’s essentially the lead role.

Yeah, I would agree about sanitizer guy. Although I did get a chuckle about what he did at the end, but yeah he was annoying as well.

And yeah, I did like the ending of KOTM, but I found myself enjoying this one more. I like the villain here more than Ghidorah.

Yeah I really loved skull island, I felt that was a great King Kong film and would have been fine had they stopped there, but we knew where they were going with it, so here we are. Solid film

I'm gonna start off by saying I loved this movie. The fights were awesome and the way it played out to the end was great. I'd still rank it behind KotM simply because that movie was a Heisei/Showa hybrid film with a Hollywood budget and it simply speaks to me as someone who grew up watching those movies. Plus, seeing Mothra, Rodan, and King Ghidorah in a big budget Hollywood Godzilla film is simply hard to top.

There are a few gripes as far as interesting ideas that aren't explored or things that aren't addressed that I think some reshoots and another 15-20 minutes might have fixed, but considering the hit that Hollywood took because of Covid-19 I can understand why they weren't reshot or added, or maybe it was never meant to be done which would be a huge missed opportunity, and it's my only real gripe about the film.

It's a shame if GvK is the last movie of the MonsterVerse because the world building in the film is amazing and opens the doors to so much that can be done now and I'm really curious to explore it. I don't get the big deal with the humans, I mean it sure wasn't mind blowing or deep, but its par for the course of human characters in almost every Godzilla movie outside of G54.

If I had to rank the MonsterVerse movies personally It'd go:

1. KotM
2. GvK
3. Skull Island
4. G14

The ONLY reason I put Skull Island over G14 is cause Skull Island was simply more fun. G14 had breathtaking cinematography and shots when it comes to Big G but the overall film and its decisions still annoy me to this day.

Also, while Godzilla's own theme in GvK is cool in the sense that its the Odo Island track from G54, the score as a whole was just not memorable and I honestly wish they had kept Bear McCreary.

I will probably have a minority opinion, but I liked KotM more. For me, that is still best Monsterverse movie. This was probably 2nd best though. I still liked it quite a bit.

I would rank as:

Godzilla: King of the Monsters
Godzilla vs Kong
Godzilla
Kong: Skull Island

I agree.

I think that this is a good stopping place, I think the whole purpose of the monster verse was to get to this film. Now that it’s here and has served it purpose it may be a good time to stop. Idk this Kong feels totally different from the Skull Island Kong. It’s almost like the KK lives Kong who was supposed to be the 76 Kong who survived the fall, but was totally different. One walked on all fours and the other never did. They had different personalities and were just different in every way.

It feels the same here, it’s as if they are two different Kong’s. Godzilla felt the same, but Kong was different. I would really have liked to seen this movie directed by Vought Robert’s or Peter Jackson, one wonders how it would differ.
After such a strong opening and great fan reaction to the film, I doubt they will stop now.

i do question if godzilla was need for this movie becuase the more i watch it it seem that oveeral plot wont change if godzilla wasnt in the movie

Ah, the whole point of the movie was for Godzilla and Kong to fight... so yes, Godzilla was very much needed.

Ugh...the human characters are all annoying & useless in GvK. The ridiculous screenplay just made them even more useless in trying to engage me. These are where the film failed me.

I like Skull Island, King of Monsters & Godzilla way better than GvK. At least the human characters were more compelling in the three previous films than the latest one.

I like Kong better in Skull Island. Kong in KvG did nothing for me, and he's like some damn chimpanzee held on leash by the human to do their bidding. Godzilla looked the same since the first film in 2014 but he seems to have shrunken in height...old age caught up with him? lol

The good things about GvK - interesting looking monsters in the alt-world. I like how they clearly aped the Batman vs Superman/Superman vs Zodoomsday & Superman vs Zod (MOS) fights & city destruction. I certainly approve of this. lmao

5/10

MBB's plotline seemed useless, her group didn't really do anything.
Feels like it was all to build up to a point where they were supposed to stand in for the audience to have mecha G explained to them,

Is this supposed to be the final movie? Because
the whole hollow earth thing just expands on the mythology of titans so much, seeing as there are Kong species statues that are built that's larger than Kong himself, and some ancient vault that looks like a temple that's been built. Are they hinting at even bigger creatures than the titans that built all this?

I enjoyed it. Granted I was also working while watching it but I feel like I could pay attention enough to it...

Certainly seems like the end of the franchise as they did nothing to set up a new film or can I really see where they go from here.

Was REALLY wanting a flashback scene to when Kong and co. all lived together.

I read the director said they had no post credits scene basically because they have to see of this one does well enough to warrant a sequel. I hope it does. I would like to see the series even more expanded to other monsters like Gamera.

You and me both.... fingers crossed.

Isn't the whole ancient vault thing setting up some greater intelligent beings? I can't see Kong's species building statues of themselves so it's gotta be something else right?

This was amazing. My favorite of the new films! The fight scenes were outstanding, and yeah, this definitely works best in the cinema. I still can't get over how good the fight scenes are.

Wow, this movie delivered. The fights were great and frankly I wish they could've gone on longer. That whole final hour felt like it was 20 minutes for me.

The human story again is whatever, but it wasn't painful to sit through for me. MBB and BTH's arc certainly had no real impact to the overall narrative but I think you take their story out, then Godzilla would feel like he had less presence since they're constantly talking about him while he's offscreen.

If I had any real criticism of GvK, it was them killing off Ren Serizawa. That was a really stupid move. He should've escaped or get apprehended in the end. I know they went into this not knowing if there was going to be another Monsterverse film, but if it continues, Ren could've been further developed as a human antagonist in a future Godzilla film. Not a deal breaker but certainly a missed opportunity there.

Godzilla: King of the Monsters

Godzilla
Kong: Skull Island

I feel like my tastes tend to align with yours. I love the fights in GvK and it is a tighter film but despite KOTM's flaws it felt more like a journey. In addition, there's something about the fights in KOTM that feel like there was more weight (in terms of stakes) to them than GvK. Its still too early for me but at this time, on a subjective scale I would share the same ranking as you.

Oof. The vibe im getting in this thread isnt encouraging so far...are the fights themselves not even satisfying?

Pacific Rim and the previous films did the action better. This climax felt like a generic video game or WWE match. Even when building after building was being destroyed it was more like props being knocked down rather than skyscrapers and a city being leveled.

I said it a few days ago, and I'll say it again. None of it has any sense of mass or weight.

Godzilla and the
Mecha
plot line weren't needed at all. There is a good Kong film buried under a lot of unnecessary crap.

I'm not gonna write off the whole movie because of this, but I watched the first five minutes just as an appetiser before the main course later, and Kong scratching his ass like a fratboy annoyed me on a level that honestly surprised me.
Then he takes a shower. He's way too human in this film.

Did anyone find that the volume level was much lower than it should be? I have a pretty good home theater and even after turning it to reference level it was still lower than any other movie. Loses quite a bit of the impact.
Its not your theater. Its just how HBO streaming audio is. I typically have to turn my sound system up 10 higher than usual when I watch anything on HBO's app.

Disney also mixes their audio below reference level.

Im on the opposite. HBO is loud as hell on my tv

I enjoyed the movie, but it did dragged a little bit for me during the human scenes. Of course Godzilla and Kong were the only characters that matter in this movie. The fight scenes were amazing, especially on IMAX. It felt good to be back in the movie theater again.

It was low for me too. Had the same issue with the Snyder Cut. Didn't have that issue though with WW84 and Judas and the Black Messiah.

I still found the Hong Kong fight in Pacific Rim more enjoyable than this one. Then again, Del Toro is in another plane as a director.
