Godzilla vs Kong (2021)

I get that this movie has a giant monkey, but I still don't know why King of the Monsters got trashed and this is the one that's so beloved.

I think a big part is that the action is much more clearer. It isn't washed in the dark or in the freakin rain. That definitely helps sell the action much more than KOTM. I would also say that the Team Kong human story is a bit better than what we got in KOTM. Team Godzilla human story is definitely more nonsensical, sure. But it is also a lot, lot less of the movie.

Do we really need to inject pro or anti Snyder discussion into every topic? Like seriously, the review bombing thing doesn't even matter now. It has been taken care of and the movie is out. Can we as fans please move on? Like seriously, some of us are beyond tired of this us vs them garbage, and making this an issue is only being done to provoke people.

Crap like this is making me very tired of this place in general. Movies are not fun to discuss anymore. All anyone wants to do now is whine about other fans. So frigging annoying. When I joined in 2004, I came here to chat with people about Spider-Man 2 and find people like me. I never wanted to come on exclusively to crap on other people in unrelated threads where no one was making fans an issue.

Movies used to be fun

Apologies for bringing up the Snyder stuff, SF. I’ll refrain from doing so again (at least here and in threads not related to JL) because I don’t want to ruin anyone’s enjoyment of a movie or this forum as a whole.

Yeah, I’ve heard a lot of criticism for how rain and smoke obscured a lot of the action in KOTM. It didn’t bother me personally but I can see why people wouldn’t care for it. And yeah, even though I wouldn’t say the human characters in this are all that much better than the ones in KOTM, they at least have more interesting motivations and goals. I liked KOTM a lot (at least the first time I saw it... repeat views not as much) but the most interesting character is Vera, whose motivation is so absolutely insane that it’s impossible to take seriously lol.

Holding out on seeing GvK for another week since my birthday's around the corner and it would be a good occasion to watch it then. The hard part will be avoiding spoilers online until then lol

Good luck, but in that case you might want to avoid this thread until then haha.

I thought the action was pretty kick-ass. Was it me or did they have the monsters move a little more fluidly/quickly this time around?

Well I watched King of the monsters last night and thought it sucked but was pretty excited for GvK
(I dont know why I just was) and imo the movie sucked just as much.

Am I crazy? I still think King of the Monsters is the best of this bunch.

Naw you're not crazy. I'm with you and surprisingly quite a few posters in this forum agree too. Are you a big fan of the late-Showa and Heisei era?

However, KOTM OST> GvK OST.

I didn't think I would've, but after KOTM brought the Ikufube theme in the Monsterverse, I found myself really missing that iconic Godzilla theme. I saw an interview where Wingard explained he didn't want that theme in GvK because that wasn't the identity they wanted to go for,
especially early in the film when they were toying with the red herring of Godzilla being a villain. However I do think Wingard missed an opportunity to use the theme at the absolute end when Godzilla rises before leaving for the water. If he used that there, that would've been *chef's kiss*

People go to these movies to see monsters fighting. There’s a lot of monsters fighting in KOTM, but you can’t see it lol.

All joking aside, KOTM tried to have it’s cake and eat it too with trying to mimic the “from our perspective massive scale” angle of Godzilla ‘14 while also delivering a lot of monster action and it didn’t really work. Every fight just feels like background to whatever the humans are doing.

I also think people have a hard time taking these things seriously. KOTM takes itself way too seriously. It tries to keep the tone of the first film and a similar tone to the original ‘54 film, but when you have a ton of monsters fighting, the “awe and terrifying” aspect loses its appeal a bit. Less is more in that regard. I think it’s easier for us to imagine one giant monster arriving and attacking and still feel somewhat grounded. It’s harder for us to imagine four or five of them who literally bow to another one at the end and take it seriously. GvK is much more aware of this. I don’t think the actual jokes work at all, but even with the jokes falling flat, the tone it sets is much less serious and much more “have fun and enjoy Giant Monke and Giant Lizzzard” which is all the average person wants in something like this.

I thought this was okay. Kong was the highlight; it really is his movie and his arc is easily the most well developed, which is to say that it's developed at all. There are a LOT of human characters in this and they're even more paper-thin and useless than in the previous movies. The action delivers, which I know is why we all watch these movies, but I've yet to see any of them that was able to balance that with interesting story and characters. They are not mutually exclusive.

The fact that this is set to outgross KOTM's global box office take (and maybe even in the U.S.!) with the pandemic/HBOMax/piracy going on at the same time is absolutely amazing.
It’s great news indeed! Bring on more Monsterverse movies

Just saw this not 10 minutes ago and my only gripe is the very reason why they were able to beat you know who.

I almost wonder if Legendary would prefer to stick to Kong for future movies. Some part of me would love to see a Monsterverse Destroy All Monsters. But, a lot is going to depend on Toho. Going to have to hope it does great in Japan.

Not sure I agree with that, but OK.

Yes most definitely.

IMHO the theme doesn't represent Godzilla being a hero, but a force of nature. Something primal and elemental. A disaster or catastrophe given flesh.

Resizing Goji and the score are the only two real complaints I have.

I would put KOTM ahead of it slightly, I really loved the ludicrous nature of Godzilla and Ghidorah's posturing. Plus it had a heart in Mothra that was quite beautiful.

I really liked GvK though as there was pretty some fascinating stuff there. I would really like to see a film set on the
Hollow Earth
if they could get the human aspect tighter.

Just on the humans as well, they will always be necessary in these films. It's not their inclusion that sucks, more execution.

Not sure I agree with that, but OK.

I don’t necessarily agree with it, either, but that seems to be the consensus from a lot of causal fans. WB had all the forced humor added in GvK as a “course correction”.

The truth probably lies somewhere in the middle, though I do think the fights in KOTM are mostly just poorly directed. I think the same film directed by someone else, probably would have been better and more popular because the fights would have been legible.

I'm also a big Heisei fan, and I find that KOTM tends to be most enjoyed by fans of those eras, probably because it unmistakably feels influenced by those films.

I do think the one thing Wingard gets right over Dougherty though is that in the final fights, he keeps the humans mostly relegated to being cheerleaders/explainers and keeping the focus primarily on the monsters. I think if KOTM did that, probably some opinions are kinder on the film.

I agree with you about the theme too. That theme's been there since '54 so I'm not entirely sure why Wingard felt it would've confused the viewers on Godzilla's identity in GvK. At the same time it's not like every Godzilla film used that theme either so it's not like it required it.
