the problem, though, is that SR was not a direct sequel to STM and SII.

it was a pseudo-sequel with vague history........which made it more confusing.

It's also assuming that the audience has seen, or remembers, or even likes STM and SII.

that's why I wanted a fresh restart/reboot....ala BB....

^And thats the reason it isn't a good film to me. I didn't feel for superman at all, it wasn't his story it was Lois Lane,s. That might have been okay if the right actress had been cast but alas, it wasn't to be.

Nice post! I'll second that! Good points!

One of the worst parts has to be that I didn't feel for Superman. At all. As a matter of fact, I thought the film portrayed him in a very unsympathetic manner. Instead of feeling FOR him, I was GLAD that he had to suffer for his actions.

True.
it was a pseudo-sequel with vague history........which made it more confusing.

True again.
It's also assuming that the audience has seen, or remembers, or even likes STM and SII.

Insightful and true.

I'll second that. With Routh and the visual look of SR it could have been a real winner if done as a completely fresh start and great story.

agreed.

The story revolved more around Lois and even Lex, moreso than it did Clark/Supes.

That's what I really liked about the Spidey movies and Batman Begins ( and hopefully TDK ). Both movie series focused not just on the heroics, but on the PERSON......the "man behind the mask." So, we got to know Peter Parker and Bruce Wayne......not just Spiderman and Batman.

In SR, we barely got to know Superman, and we HARDLY got to know Clark / Kal-el......y'know, the real person. Who he is......and what makes him the great hero that he is......

Excellent points. W/ vague history it's left up to us to fill in those gaps AND to try and reconcile his less than heroic behavior with what we already know about the character instead of having a story that dramatizes these aspects. The film really doesn't tell us WHY, just, it happened and here's how the consequences play out.

I can agree with every point you made in this post. It is so true.

I didn't feel anything for either of these characters. They did nothing to make you feel for these characters and it is what makes it seem so hollow in what they were trying accomplish. And now they have a son together........Sigh.

Lol....And even when you attempt to fill the gaps based on what info we have and what you think could have happen there has not been any good scenarios whatsoever.

The thing is the mistake he makes is nothing more than a contrivance to get him off the planet for five years. It's really hard to buy into any human being, much less Superman, being so weak not to tell people they care about most they have to leave for a long time. The movie does nothing to explore how he was feeling at the time either.
Yes...he boards the Crystal Express and off he goes. Not a word to anyone. And five years later Supes and Clark return at the exact same time. Coincidence......not to anyone in this movie apparently. Good ole Jimmy....sits and has a drink with Clark and the next minute he is watching Supes save a shuttle and looks over at an empty seat beside him. Nah...Couldnt be.

Yeah the vague history was lazy writing. You can have vague history in a Superman story by making it clear that Superman and Lois have known each each other for a while and Superman and Luthor have been enemies for a while, but in this case the plot is predicated on events that happened in the past and we are never told exactly what those circumstances were. The vague history implies things played out the same way they had in the first two movies but Singer adds confusion to this by saying, not necessarily the case. Like Lois and Superman sleeping together might not be when Jason was concieved. The vague history allows Singer to give his stories whatever backstories he wants when it is convinient. I've also noticed a lot of people seem to think the revelation that Jason is Superman's son is a sequel set-up, and it could be explored in a sequel, but it was really used as the resolution to the story. It resolves the conflict between Lois and Superman and the personal conflict (barely touched on) of Superman's about him feeling alone. "I'm all that's left." At the end he's learned he is not.

Singer and his writers basically wrote themselves into a corner in more ways then one, and that is why both of their pitches where rejected by Horn. I mean it is hard to go from where they wrote themselves into. I think that is why they are hearing pitches if they are to continue with the SR storyline. In the end, I think it will be a reboot. And the sad thing is you could have easily gone off of the S2 timeline, tying it in, and made a really good Superman centric story. This just was not it.

No I just heard one involved Brainiac, and the other involved Darkside. All I know. There was a rumor about the begining of the film that Singer, Harris and Dougherty had planned out and when told to Horn, he was told it was not interesting.

if I remember correctly, one of those pitches also had Doomsday and Zod in it

ANd I really have tried to come up with something and to make it work it just becomes so complex and off the wall...

Really? That's new to me. I know about Zod as a rumor with Jude Law for SR, but I never heard about Doomsday at all. Thought I know he was planned for the rejected Superman Lives when Burton was going to do it.

yeah, it was part of the rumor of the latest that was going around in that meeting that Singer and the people of WB were having

exactly I mean when I heard it was a sequal that simply choose to ignore 3 and 4 I was excited.

Singer could have done so much more... When I started hearing about the kid and some other thing I thought Singer was setting up a HUGE twist at the end revealing some terrible negative created when Superman turned back time in the first movie.

AN ALternate reality thoery that would have paived the way for a REALLY cool introduction to Darksiede!!

oh and everyone at WB is going to give SIngers ideas a MUCH harder going over this time around. Everyone is sceptic and a cinic right now IMO. They put on the face to the media about being satified

but you know every single one of those execs was figuring for at least 275 to 300 for SUperman

Would you prefer a McG superman, another smallville, or maybe another X3. Listen Superman Returns is just the begining. Singer has said that the next superman will be his Wrath of Kahn. X2 was much better than X-Men 1. Just give the guy a chance. I trust him, we should all trust him, he loves Supes, and knows how to make good movies. Let's go out there and let the world know that the next Superman MUST be a SINGER/ROUTH Superman. Let's give them a chance, because the alternative is horrifying!:super: :super:

EXCACTLY, gie Singer the chance to make another great Supeman movie otherwise we will get Superboy by Goerge Miller, or some other ****ty X3 ripoff that just WONT satisfy (at least MOST of us Matt).

If we dont get MOS i dread to think what type of **** we will get.

Singer's not the only director out there. It's not Singer or bust, Singer or cheeseville. There are other possibilities. Open your mind.

The first pitch included Brainiac, Luthor, and another villian (Eradicator?) I believe. The 2nd pitch included Darkseid.

Well, those sound like good choices for new characters - there must have been something in the treatment/synopsis they really didn't like. Or they were not wanting Singer and his team under any circumstances.
