David Tennant, star of the Brit hit crime drama Broadchurch and one of the most beloved Doctor Who actors, has been cast in Fox‘s U.S. remake of Broadchurch. The U.S. version will star Tennant as an American detective who is the lead male investigator on the case of a shocking murder that puts a small town under scrutiny. This time it’s set in an American town, and, like the original, follows the tragic and mysterious death of a young boy found dead on an idyllic beach surrounded by rocks and a jutting cliff-face, from where he may have fallen. Although his cause of death remains unsolved, the picturesque seaside town where the tragedy occurred is at the heart of a major police investigation and a nationwide media frenzy.

Dan Futterman (Capote, In Treatment, Foxcatcher) and Anya Epstein (In Treatment, Homicide) have signed on as executive producers and showrunners. The crime series is scheduled to begin filming in January for broadcast during the 2014-2015 season.

Fox’s Broadchurch is being produced by Shine America in association with Kudos and Imaginary Friends. Original series creator Chris Chibnall (Doctor Who, Camelot) will write the first episode and executive produce with Shine America’s Carolyn Bernstein (The Bridge), Jane Featherstone (The Hour, Utopia) from drama producers Kudos, Futterman and Epstein. The series will be distributed by Shine International.

Tennant, Futterman and Epstein are repped by UTA; Tennant is also repped by Independent Talent in the UK.

Anna Gunn & Jacki Weaver Join Fox Event Series ‘Gracepoint’, James Strong To Direct

Breaking Bad‘s Anna Gunn and Jacki Weaver (Silver Linings Playbook) are set to co-star opposite David Tennant in Fox‘s event series Gracepoint, a U.S. remake of UK’s Broadchurch. James Strong, who directed the pilot and multiple episodes of the original series, has come on board to direct multiple episodes of the Fox version — including the opening hour, on which he will serve as executive producer. Gracepoint, from Shine America and Kudos, centers on Detective Emmett Carver (Tennant), the lead male investigator on the case of a shocking murder that puts a small town under scrutiny. Gunn, repped by UTA and The Schiff Co., will play Detective Ellie Miller, a wife and mother who was passed over for a promised promotion in favor of an outsider, Carver, but her disappointment quickly fades in light of tragedy. Weaver, repped by ICM Partners, Elevate Entertainment and Felker Toczek, will play Susan Wright, a glowering, mysterious woman who is new to town. Broadchurch creator Chris Chibnall is writing the first episode of Gracepoint and will executive produce with showrunners Dan Futterman and Anya Epstein as well as Carolyn Bernstein and Jane Featherstone. Filming is scheduled to begin in January for a debut next season. Strong, who just finished directing The Great Train Robbery for the BBC starring Jim Broadbent and Luke Evans, recently signed with WME. He is also repped by manager Jeremy Platt and attorney David Fox.

Rankin, repped by Abrams and Evolution, will play Paul Coates, Gracepoint’s well-intentioned but inexperienced local minister who becomes the town’s defacto spokesperson in the wake of the tragedy. Kull, repped by Innovative Artists and Sanders Armstrong Caserta, will play Danny’s mother Beth. Anguished by her loss, Beth is hungry to discover the truth behind her son’s untimely death.

Peña, repped by repped by CAA, Management 360 and Rick Genow, will play Danny’s father Mark Lasseter, a well-liked local plumber and family man. Like anyone else, Mark is left devastated by the murder, but as his wife, Beth (Virginia Kull), suspects, he may be hiding something about that fatal evening. Peña, currently seen in American Hustle, is wrapping Sony’s Fury opposite Brad Pitt and next stars in Chavez as Cesar Chavez.

In 1976, Nick Nolte burst into the scene with a starring role in a mini-series, ABC’s 12-hour saga Rich Man, Poor Man. Thirty seven year later, Nolte is returning to longform TV with a regular role in Fox’s 10-hour event series Gracepoint, a remake of the UK’s Broadchurch. The project, from Shine America and Kudos, centers on Detective Emmett Carver (David Tennant), the lead male investigator on the case of a shocking murder of 11-year-old Danny that puts a small town under scrutiny. CAA-repped Nolte will play Jack Reinhold, the stubborn, willful owner of the kayak rental on the beach as well as the local wildlife observation program, where the murdered boy was one of his volunteers. This marks only the second major TV gig for Nolte since Rich Man, Poor Man; he also starred on the HBO drama series Luck. Nolte has been focused on features, earning three Oscar nominations, most recently for Warrior.

Exclusive: Fox's Broadchurch Adaptation Adds Jessica Lucas as Intrepid Reporter

The cast for Gracepoint, Fox’s 13-episode adaptation of the ITV crime drama Broadchurch, continues to grow.

Onetime Melrose Place resident Jessica Lucas is the latest addition, TVLine has learned exclusively, playing the role of reporter Renee Clemons.

Formerly of the Bakersfield Mercury News and now a reporter for the San Francisco Chronicle, Renee thought the move to the big city would be a step up the career ladder — but things haven’t turned out that way. Previously she followed Detective Carter (played by Broadchurch’s David Tennant) on the Rosemont murders, and now she sniffs another big story with the death of a young boy named Danny Lasseter.

Lucas’ other TV credits include Cult, CSI, 90210 and the Canadian drama Edgemont.

Previously announced Gracepoint castings include Breaking Bad‘s Anna Gunn, as Carter’s partner Detective Ellie Miller; Michael Peña (Gangster Squad) as Danny’s father Mark; Kevin Zegers (Gossip Girl) as reporter Owen Burke; Jacki Weaver (Silver Linings Playbook) as mysterious RV park resident Susan Wright; and three-time Oscar nominee Nick Nolte, as wildlife observation program manager Jack Reinhold.

Gracepoint is scheduled to begin filming in January on Vancouver Island in Victoria, for broadcast during the 2014-2015 season.

Tennant (Doctor Who) co-starred in the original series and will reprise more-or-less the same role in the Fox version of the show, a brittle detective here named Emmett Carver. Gunn (Breaking Bad) will play detective Ellie Miller, his partner, whose son was a friend of the victim. The drama tells the story of an investigation into the murder of a young boy in a small town.

Gracepoint will debut on Fox next season and also stars Nick Nolte, Jacki Weaver, Michael Peña, Kevin Rankin, Virginia Kull and Kevin Zegers.
