Yeah. They're actually quite good. No one beats Freddie, though. Vocally, he's the best lead singer ever.

I like Paul Rodgers a lot, and I love Queen, but ne'er 'tween should the two have ever met. Rodgers butchers Queen songs as far as I'm concerned. His style and range just really aren't suited for Queen's music. Quite frankly, I was more impressed with the way George Michael sang "Somebody To Love" at the Freddy Mercury Tribute Concert and kind of hoped Queen would recruit him to sit in for Freddy. Instead, he decided to squander his talent on crappy pop music and getting arrested for soliciting men in the park. There's another Queen tribute album out there that Robin McAuley does a cover of "I Want It All" on (with Chris Impelliterri on guitar, whom I can't stand) that makes me wish Queen would have considered him as well. Rodgers just doesn't fit with that band.

I agree. I so was hoping Michael would be chosen as well. When I hear his voice, I'm immediately reminded of Freddie.

This thread reminds me of a running joke in my old band where we kidded that the greatest drummer of all time was Cozy Powell, because he had played with every band in the history of rock music and recorded with them as well. And then some a-hole would always mention Carmine Appiece and we'd just say that was Cozy Powell's secret identity. Heh! :D

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Ginger Baker, Stewart Copeland, Carl Palmer, Ainsley Dunbar, Steve Smith or Nicko McBrain.

when I heard it was to be PR with Queen I assumed it was an Onion article or something. It seems like something from a strange dream. I would think of them as nearly opposites.

Some drummers you forgot to mention:

Dave Mackintosh of Dragonforce(faster than any drummer on here)

Pat McGrath(Drummed for the Saosin EP "Translating the Name", also a former Slayer drum tech, listen to the Saosin EP's drums, they are ridiculous)

Dino Campanella of Dredg (Flowing beats with an insane live show)

Erin Tate of Minus the Bear (He is simply amazing. You really have to appreciate his style and fundamentals.)

You're also forgetting about Taylor Hawkings, drummer of the Foo Fighters. The guy is insanely talented.

Well, he's got the Rockin'est name.

And he looked good in spandex and could twirl his drumsticks really cool.

Fast drummers make me feel like Indiana jones, when the guy comes out flipping his swords around and Indiana Jones just shoots him and shrugs.

I hear these thrash/death/hardcore metal/whatever bands, and there's always a guy who is playing 4/4, but when you do that too fast, it sounds exactly like POLKA music. It's very silly.

Also, if I were king of Rockland, any drummer who owned or even used a 5 inch roto-tom, well, any roto-toms, would be banished.

Good ones.

I think Sarge 2.0 mentioned Nicko McBrain, who I've never even heard of.

Dragonforce is actually like....80's hair metal with fast drums....And insane guitars. It's like if the 80's had talent. :D And I'd like to see any one of those drummers in the poll to keep up with Mackintosh. Just listen to the music, they couldn't stand a chance.

I also mentioned Ginger Baker. :o

Nicko McBrain is the drummer for Iron Maiden, and has been since their fourth album.

You know, I agree, but aside from that, this is the most accurate of the music related polls we've had in the last few weeks (Lead Singer and Lead Guitarist). Peart and Rick Allen are the only major omissions I can think of.

We could've dropped Grohl (I love Nirvana, but come on, they were pretty bad musicians) and Fontana (never really had the impact of the other people on the poll. Maybe even ditch the "others" option since there aren't many others missing.
Thats because the shear ammount of great singers and guitarists makes for the fact that you can't put all of them in one poll. Honestly there aren't that many GREAT drummers. Neil Peart should have been on there. Rick Allen could have been on there. Mike Portnoy (Dream Theater) should have been on there. Ian Paice (Deep Purple) should have been on there. Alex Van Halen should have been on there. Ginger Baker, Terry Bozzio, Danny Carey, Mitch Mitchell should I keep going?

Drumming is not an endurance sport. I could teach anyone here to play the opening drums to "When The Levee Breaks" in a matter of minutes.
It's also the best Rock drums ever recorded in human history.

Gotta love that name though, "Dragonforce".
They should've had a Saturday Morning show where they defeat aliens with solos and stuff.

I shoulda known Sarge would have mentioned some of those.

LMAO! I've heard some Dragonforce stuff. They seem to equate quality with speed. Definitely disciples of Yngwie.

Agreed. Drumming isn't about crazy fast parts that no one can really decipher.

Crap, missed it. Sorry. Thats why you should alphabetize on big polls, so people can find the ones they would vote for.

As proven by everyone else, fast drumming does not equal good drumming. It equals an ear splitting headache.

Also the 1980s' had a lot talent. Certainly more than today.

And every drummer on that poll could beat this Mackintosh guy. Maybe not as fast as him, but in terms of who's the best drummer, he'll lose by a long shot. Even Ringo would leave him in the dust.

I'll put Peart up against Mackintosh any day of the week. Steve Smith and Nicko, too. Those guys would bury him in complex rhythms played at speeds he couldn't hope to reproduce. Sorry. He's fast, I'll give him that. But, that's all that he is.

Exactly. Fast doesn't equal good. It makes you rushed and sloppy.

I find it ironic that Rush is called Rush and yet their music is anything but rushed.

In the 80's, when I was a stupid but well-meaning teen, I was all about speed and was quite sure that all the people who told me less-is-more, or that I should try to slow down and be more melodic, were just jealous of my blistering technique.
Then I grew up and now would much rather have Charlie Watts appear on my album than Dragonforce man and would much rather see the White Stripes perform than Steve Vai.

Peart plays some pretty fast stuff, but mostly his drumming is just incredibly complex and often he's playing in multiple time signatures at the same time while he's at it. It's pretty amazing.
