Guardians of the Galaxy Guardians of the Galaxy: General Discussion & Speculation Thread

I've been hearing a lot of rumours about Magus in GOTG lately, but who exactly is he? I know he's the future version/alternate reality version of Adam Warlock, but besides that who is he? Would he work with Thanos?

Ok, so what past experiences are you talking about? Because in every instance which I've cited, in which actual offensive things were directed towards Christians (Piss Christ, Vagina Virgin Mary, Dogma, 2012, etc), the reaction was nothing like the reaction which you expect GotG will get based on simply using the word "church" in what is an alien and made-up religion.

Again, 2012 and the rest aren't valid comparisons. You're not talking about the same things there, either in scope or substance.

Look at something like Da Vinci Code. That depicted a group tied to Christianity as a cult. The result? Christians called for a mass boycott. That's the type of thing I'm talking about. A statue falling over isn't anywhere near comparable.

Yeah using the word "church" isnt a problem as long as the religion has no similarities to any of the christian sects. That said, they might use a different term just to avoid having to answer stupid questions. either way, not an issue.

oh and the real, enduring result of the Da Vinci Code was 760 million at the box office. controversy shmontroversy.

I'm not saying the controversy would be bad at all. If anything, it might help.

I doubt Marvel Studios wants to deliberately court controversy. If they use the Universal Church of Truth, it will likely not be in a manner designed to deliberately satirize Christianity, or any actual religion. Which shouldn't be too hard.

And the part you're missing is that, while my comparisons may not be on the nose, your comparisons are even less valid. The Universal Church of Truth has no relation to Christianity whatsoever! You think that Christian landmarks being obliterated is less on point than a fictional alien religion where the object of worship is a purple-skinned man with a silver affro? I don't know how you can even take that argument seriously, it's so goofy on its face.

The Magus would NEVER work with Thanos. They're universal counterpoints. The Magus is the Champion of Life while Thanos is the Avatar of Death. They're diametrically opposed and each represents everything which the other despises.

Here ya go:

The Magus Infinitus: The future flip side of one hero's soul

But didn't Magus do a lot of serial killing when he got the Infinity Gauntlet?

that last pic of thanos almost looks like nova or blackbolt if you take away the face and gold chestpiece.

Seriously. I'm a christian and would have no problem with them using the UCT as the main villains. As long as they dont purposely make it comparable to any real religion then people should be okay. Of course, in todays world, there will always be somebody offended by everything that happens.

Thanos saves lives when it serves his purposes. When the Magus kills it isn't for the sake of killing, but to serve a greater purpose. And his purpose is life, while Thanos's is death. Sure, the Magus is a horribly oppressive bastard, but he's still the Champion of Life. The whole reason the Magus even came into being was to oppose Thanos.

As for when the Magus had the Infinity Gauntlet, off the top of my head I'm pretty sure he didn't kill a single person with the Infinity Gauntlet. I think the worst he did was rough up Dr. Doom and Thanos a little bit. He certainly didn't do anything like Thanos, who wiped out half of all the living beings in the universe.

It looked like he didn't have gloves in the movie.

He didn't. Or at least, he definitely had one bare hand.
And there's no reason for Joss to draw attention to that fact other than an obvious reference to fanboys that Thanos doesn't have the Gauntlet. Yet. :word:

if we believe that twitter guy, what did people miss in the GoTG banner?

The stars in the background that look like the star on nova's helmet maybe

Look at the right hand corner could be Skuttlebutt.

If you look closely, you can see Venom in Rocket's eye

they showed the right hand of thanos. he wears the gauntlet on his left. but i get what you mean. anyway thanos put the gems on his own gauntlet he always wore. so he should at least have had some gauntlets on, not a bare hand. the concept pic above looks like he is going emo style. you know where they put their fingers through their sweaters. but the most important thing to me is this.

he better still be a lefty!!!!

If I see how cool Thanos looks in those pics, I pray one day we see a proper Darkseid too...

This is how I see the plot unfolding:

  • Groot, Gamora, Drax and Rocket Raccoon were prisoners of the Kree. The Kree are in possession of the Soul Gem and have been for centuries. The four manage to escape, stealing the Gem and leaving Hala in a small starship.
  • On Earth, pilot Peter Quill passes through a Kree wormhole, sending him out into deep space. The Kree placed the wormhole there for easy transition from Hala to Earth, as they have a spy on Earth to see if it is a threat to them.
  • Quill's ship drifts through space, before it is found by the Guardians. The Kree have issued a bounty for the retrieval of the Gem and the death of the Guardians across the Universe, and quickly Thanos hears about this.
  • Suddenly, everyone is after the Guardians and what they have in their care.
  • Thanos allies himself with a shape-shifting race known as the Skrulls, and promises them shares power of the Soul Gem if they help him get it. He sends an armada of Skrulls after the Guardians.
  • Quill is introduced to how vast and mysterious the universe is, and has to adjust to life in space, knowing he can't go home now. The team explain who they are and how they banded together years ago to fight cosmic threats, like Thanos.
  • Suddenly, Adam Warlock, whom the team have met previously, appears on their ship, offering his help in protecting the Gem from Thanos. They accept.
That's all I've got that's concrete, but Magus and the Universal Church of Truth would kidnap the Guardians and take the Gem, so they have to make an uneasy alliance with Thanos (like in The Thanos Imperative) to get the Gem back and defeat the Church. Later in the movie it is revealed that the Kree and Skrulls have been at war for centuries. Adam Warlock decides the best way to keep the Gem safe is to get rid of it, and casts a spell to send it to a distant planet (at the beginning of The Avengers 2 it lands on Earth).

Halfway through the movie they name themselves 'Guardians of the Galaxy', as they are Guardians of the Infinity Gem. Adam Warlock tells Quill that he was born during a special planetary alignment and offers him the mantle of the 'Star-Lord', an interplanetary police man.

By the end of the movie Star-Lord is leading the Guardians, Thanos is ordering Skrull scientists to locate the Soul Gem, and the Kree/Skrulls re-iginite their ancient war, now over the Infinity Gem.

Avengers 2 would continue the plotline of going after the Gem, but Thanos gets it, creating a dismal ending for the movie.

I think some stuff could be cut out or toned down, but I'm certain the Kree will have some sort of heavy involvement, setting up Ms. Marvel and Mar-Vell in A2 (Mar-Vell will have been already introduced in the SHIELD show as Walter Lawson, but only reveal himself as a Kree spy in A2).

Kree and skrulls and thanos and universal church of truth? Seems like alot
