Guardians of the Galaxy

I just hope that whoever stays on keeps up with how good the first issue was, ya know? I don't want it to be one of those books that fizzles after the first arc or two like Runaways.

I doubt that is going to happen. DnA are on their A-game and Pellitier's never been better.

It would be odd getting Vance Astro back considering that his younger counterpart is actually doing something back on earth. I just hope he loses the mullet and the Capt. America trench for a stronger design.

He already did lose that later in the GotG series. He got a symbiote--one more benign than Venom's--that essentially created a variant of his original containment suit:

I would honestly love to see the GotG Vance come back. I liked him a lot growing up.

That blue guy is not wearing enough clothes.

(Ignore my ignorance to whom it is).

What an awesome issue. They definatly need to keep the intersperced 'after battle' commentary by the whole crew, it's top notch.

[blackout] As Corp predicted, it ends up being Vance Astrovik, and he says he's Major Victory of the Guardians of the Galaxy. Which sends Rocket Raccoon into this frenzy once their back on the ship -- constantly bugging Peter and Warlock, interrupting their convos with little nuidges like "so anyway, guardians of the galaxy, thats a keeper right?" so on and so forth about 5 or 6 times. It's top notch. And apparntly Drax like Mac N Cheeze.[/blackout]

Why the heck is Rocket wearing a bubble on his head when no one else is?

Drax and Gamora can breathe in space, I believe, Warlock probably doesn't need to breathe at all since he's an artificial life-form, Phyla can protect herself with the quantum bands, and Star-Lord's got his helmet.

So how the heck were they talking? And Quasar wasn't glowing...but I guess that's just the artist's choice.

Cochlear implants that transmit sub-vocalizations via random frequency EM pulses.

Or just magic.

Warlock isn't "artificial" is he? I thought he was just complicated.

Nope, he was grown in a test tube by the Hive. I think they may have engineered him to run solely on cosmic energy or something.

I read that but........that doesn't make sense. He acknowledges his former life so for him to be born again in a test tube doesn't make sense. Maybe I'm not explaining it correctly.

No, he was originally created synthetically. One of his powers is the ability to put himself in a cocoon and heal from severe injuries. He came out of the cocoon different, but he's still a synthetic life-form.

Is it listed anywhere all of his powers? You think he can defeat Superman?

I don't know. His powers are extremely vague since his rebirth. Before? Probably. I'd say 50/50. Superman had the physical advantage, but Warlock had impressive energy powers and knew how to use the Soul Gem to great effect.

Amazing how Marvel comics in the 90's rose to $2.95. Nowadays, they demand an extra 4 pennies.

Warlock's new powers are vague but it appears DnA want them to be connected to magic, which makes some sense as none of the other characters are magical. Considering he used to be powered by the cosmic Soul Gem, maybe his body adapted to it's loss by trying to make him have some effect over souls via his own body, which could loosely be considered magic. I haven't minded it. Warlock and Phyla stumbled in AC but are much stronger characters here; maybe DnA just needed experience with 'em.

Vance Astro is pretty cool so far, although I am not looking forward to the SI tie-in. The "betrayed from within" for a team book is so obligatory, especially within the first 6 issues, it seems.

The hard numbers from ICv2 note that the first issue debuted at 36k (and at #61 of the Top 100), which isn't bad considering NOVA is currently selling at about 28k. I am guessing the "Annihilation Era Space Audience" may be akin to the old RUNAWAYS audience, which usually held steady at about 25-26k for years. Nothing to brag about, but enough to keep the books going. However, around my local area, I noticed a few shops sold out of GOTG #1 very quickly. I barely chased down the first issue in Brooklyn. So demand for the series was higher than some shops may have anticipated. I will be curious to see how #2 fared.

Of the three or so shops in my area that I stopped off at looking for a backissue of Nightwing to replace the one my dog ate, only one had any GOTG#2 left, and it was only one copy. I asked a few of the workers and they said it sold supprisingly well/fast, and that they were mostly understocked for the demands of it.

I had to stop by the shop to buy another box and they had sold out of #2.
