Horror Guillermo Del Toro's Frankenstein

I’ll stand alone but wasn’t a fan. Long, dull, repeating of themes. Just because you make something 2 and a half hours doesn’t make it deep. Was shot well and looks gorgeous. Pretty average film. Too artsy for me.

I keep going back and re-thinking what it is that keeps me from buying in on this being a perfect adaptation given how much I loved it. But I think that I really don’t like GDT changing Victor’s background. Obviously he was playing up themes of cycles of abuse and fathers and sons, but I think that the novel’s idea that Victor had an idyllic childhood filled with unconditional love made his rejection of the creature when the creature was initially born and was completely innocent much more poignant.
I think there was a missed opportunity to explore themes of privilege and opportunity which could have been so timely.

But again, I loved what we got. But I can’t help thinking that it could’ve been more. It’s almost like GDT worked really hard and yet took the easy way out.

Some issues i had. Characters being one note. Movie not being subtle with themes. Frankenstein being hot. The score was weak, too long. Waltz didnt need to be in.

i enjoyed the movie for what it is - it's a great but pretty loose adaption of the novel, imo.

i can understand why some people might not like it if they're fans of the original mary shelley story.

they did made victor frankenstein VERY unlikeable in this. and the creature as the hero in this.

so its less subtle and less complex compared to if they stuck closer to the original story.

it makes me want to seek out to watch other frankenstein movies now though.

and hopefully this will get the youngin's to go read the novel. the OG goth story. haha

This shouldn't have been a surprise with GDT at the helm. But he made him a bit too heroic for me. The monster still did terrible things in the originals and some of that should have been kept in IMO.
