Guillermo del Toro's "The Shape of Water"

http://timestalks.com/detail-event.php?event=the_shape_of_water

A nearly hour long interview with GDT. Some of it relates to Shape of Water and might be considered lightly spoilery but most of it is pretty general. Fair warning though.

GDT is so damned great just at talking about the world and the themes that he tries to express in it.

Also I am glad for any Q&A that just hires a skilled interviewer and forgoes any audience questions. They're rarely worthwhile.

I'm glad that everyone else gets to see this movie soon.

The LA film Critics gave their cinematography aeatd to Shape of Water, beating out Deakins work for Blade Runner 2049. In turn, blade runner best out shape of water for production design. Switch this! I thought the production design was the most Luke warm aspect of Blade Runner but Deako s work is top notch. Shape of water is pretty great on all fronts.

At the LA film Critics awards vote, GDT tied for best director with the director of Call Me By Your Name.

Here's an interview with the cinematographer, Dan Lausten

The explanation of how they practically shot the opening sequence of the film is kind of wrecking my brain. Brilliant.

Here's a 25 minut interview with Sidney Wolinksy, the editor for Shape of Water.

My non spoiler review

Loved it. This is Guillermo del Toro's ode to old Hollywood in more ways than one. It's a damn shame he turned down the Universal Monster franchise because The Shape of Water is very much the del Toro's version of Creature from the Black Lagoon or Beauty and the Beast. With the incredible production design and cinematography, it also feels like part Amélie and part Edward Scissorhands. Performance wise everyone knocked it out the park as expected. Sally Hawkins delivers her best performance to date and Michael Shannon is peak Michael Shannon. I don't see this as a negative, but since the movie is a throwback to old Hollywood, they don't pull any surprises and it becomes kinda predictable. That being said, it's one of the best movies this year and I can't wait to see it again.
10/10

I'd say it's not a shame at all. I'd much rather he make this than anything associated with the Dark Universe.

I'm very curious what the general audience will think about the [BLACKOUT]fish sex[/BLACKOUT] scene.

In my screening, almost everyone was surprised.

Double Toasted's review is up.

Excellent film, a nice independent comeback for Del Toro and one of his finest movies! quite imaginative and well like Beauty and the Beast meets Creature from the Black Lagoon with a good script and deals on "people who are different" metaphorically like say anthros, xenos (strange form of folk or alien folk even from space), mutants and magical creature people.

I agree with GDT's assessment of his own work - this film really does feel like the most relaxed and emotionally in tune work he's done. It's lyrical and fearlessly believes in love. I think GDT said somewhere how he wanted the characters to find love without changing externally, and that really moved me. It was even better seeing it on screen.

Still annoyed with the release schedule of this movie. It's not going to be playing anywhere in Northern Arizona when it's supposed to go "wide" on the 22nd. I have to drive 200 miles to see this. I might just do so this weekend, despite being very frustrated by it.

Loved it. A nice monster story and love story all in one nice package. Sally Hawkins does amazingly with no words (sort of) and Michael Shannon further proves that he's great when he's angry and on the hunt. That and really loved the look of it. There are a lot of movies and shows that try to replicate that feel of the 1950s and 60s, but this one felt a bit more authentic. I'm torn now between whether this or Three Billboards is now my favorite film of the year.

Finally got to see it today. WOW. I am nearly rendered speechless. I left the movie certain that it's in my top five favorite films I have ever seen. It was elegant, beautiful, poetic and everything a movie should be. Del Toro made a work of art. I think he finally made something that surpasses Pan's Labyrinth as his masterpiece. I can't wait to see it again.

Guillermo Del Toro is ****ing back. This is a masterpiece.

It's certainly a masterpiece. It was so good that once the film ended I was sorely tempted to buy a ticket for the next showing and watch it again. I was completely wowed.

Someone please give this man his Mountains of Madness movie.
