Guillermo del Toro's "The Shape of Water"

What was surprising to me was how well this movie is selling. I had to go to three different theaters to find a showing I could get into. Each showing was full.

I have a friend who was so pissed off about the scene with the cat that he's let it color his view of every other part of the film and he has spent days ranting about the film with the most bizarrely, not just bad, but often just factually incorrect takes and statements about the film. He's been straight up just telling people to avoid seeing it or just to wait to rent it. Just bizarre all around.

So far, this is tied with Lady Bird for best of the season for me.

Why? Was it money constraints or something?

Just hard to make. Took a while to produce the suits. The layers if paint were worn off by wear and water and to be repainted. Del Toro gave the job to just one guy so that h could guarantee that the paintnepild be the same. That one guy ended up bringing in in a friend though.

Someone please give this man his Mountains of Madness movie.

Easy there, Boom. We don't know if this was a fluke or a true resurgence.

Not a huge awards guy, but I hope this film at least gets some recognition in multiple categories. Love Doug Jones, just give him Best Supporting Actor just because :)

Del Toro is really good at making cinematic fairy tales that are elegant, beautiful and ethereal.

I love Jones but I really don't think he was given much to work with here all things considered, especially in comparison to his work as the Faun and the Pale Man.

He's really good on Star Trek Discovery but the writing and characterization on that show is all over the damn place.

It's true about the writing (didn't even bother finishing the first half of the season), but I was surprised by how much Jones' acting has improved. I remember what a step down it was when he took over from David Hyde Pierce's voice work for Abe in Hellboy II. He ended up being one of the better parts of DSC, even though I was at first apprehensive about his casting.

Favorite speech of the night, so glad for him.

Just saw this. Well-deserved award for his best film since Pan's Labyrinth.

Got the chance to see this last week double dating with a friend. Really enjoyed it, the guy makes even his R rated stuff seem storybook. That Dance number was strange at first, then became beautiful.

My friend hated that I compared it to Splash though, but I didn't mean that as an insult.

I thought Doug Jones was one of the best parts about Hellboy 2 along with his romantic subplot. Honestly, David Hyde Pierce was miscast as Abe, who basically had next to no character in the original and shared little with the Abe from the comics.

The movie was good, but I did not love it. But it is amazing what production value was accomplished with less than 20 million budget.

The acting was fantastic. But I just could not relate to the love story. For me it was just weird.

To be fair, in the comics released prior to the movie, Abe was pretty much a non character.

The Shape of Water has won the Producers Guild's top award.

Unfortunately, GDT couldn't be there to accept the award as he returned to Mexico to be with his sick father.

Richard Jenkins accepted the award for him and read his statement.

Guillermo del Toro said:
“I would like to ask of you all to allow me then to dedicate a little moment and the honors of this night to both my father and my mother, to whom my infinite gratitude belongs, and in turn as a father to offer to my kids also, may they be free to pursue their dreams and fantasies and may they stand by my side when I fade away.”

I hope the film can continue its momentum.

Very wrong. Check out the BPRD comics.

I have. They didn't really get going regularly until Plague of Frogs, did they? GDT started on Hellboy shortly after Blade 2 in 2002. Not a lot of material at that time.

Beautiful movie but the beastiality killed it. She bangs an animal because she is just so sexed up. Really? It’s creepy. Plus the musical number was very poignant until she started dancing with the Creature...which I lol’d at. Felt like an SNL skit once he showed up. I looooove GDT but that man is crazy haha. Had it been a maternal/best friend love, totally would have been a beautiful movie. This is akin to a zookeeper having sex with a chimp or gorilla. That’s creepy and I’m bewildered that it’s ok because it’s sci-fi? Richard Jenkins even calls it a wild animal.

More obtuse than a movie about a horny woman that has sex with the creature from the black lagoon?

"Ewww gross."

You missed the point, or as is most likely, you purposefully missed the point.
