They hadn't really confirmed anything regaarding it so I was honestly wondering if they were gonna cheap out with that. Being Disney they have more than enough resources to recreate the animated version so it seemed odd.

Maybe they just want to show him in human form a bit to emphasise that Will Smith is in the film.

It's getting eviscerated everywhere. Honestly I think people are being way too harsh. I get that it's painful to see beloved characters from our childhood reimagined, but I don't see what's so wrong about the costumes or the actors.

With that said, I'm standing by my opinion that this movie will be nothing more than another slavish and pointless but very nice looking remake like the new Beauty and the Beast was.

See, this is never the issue imo. It is who they get to adapt it that becomes the issue. Like with any film, it depends on the talent involved.
