Fantasy Guy Ritchie Directing Disney's Aladdin

on reddit a lot are asking why he doesnt look more like in the cartoon.
this looks like a caucasian head. Will Smith is black. this would be a PR disaster. He even looks more like Robin Williams.
which furthers my point. The issue is because Will Smith is black and doesnt look like a cartoon or Robin Williams.

See, that manip doesn't work for me. It's jarring to see him looking so cartoonish while everything around him is real-looking.

They should have used Will Smith's real body, painted him blue, and gave him an ethereal glow in post-production.

A lot of what the creators of the animated Aladdin drew upon was the 1940 classic Thief of Baghdad. They pulled off a big live-action Genie way back then.

I've seen worse to be honest.

Someone tell me, have any of these live action remakes been all that good? All of them are inferior to the originals. Especially Beauty and the Beast and Emma Watson's terrible singing voice.
The Jungle Book and Cinderella were light years ahead of the original animated films.

I'd say only Beauty & the Beast was actually inferior so far (if we're counting Cinderella as the first one of this class of remakes...obviously Maleficent and Alice were different animals entirely). Cinderella and Jungle Book stepped it up.

I will say Jungle Book was OK, but for me it was only a 7/10. I thought it was decent, but it didn't have any of the magic and life the original did for me.

Cinderella, alright with that one. At least the Prince Charming was a more well rounded character there.

But I cannot abide by the Maleficent and Alice films. They were horrendous. Especially the sequel for Alice.

And to be frank, Dumbo and Lion King don't look all that special to me.

None of these are films I'd want to watch over and over again especially over the animated versions.

BATB simply reminded me of a much better film I already owned that sat about 3 feet away from my TV.

I would have liked to see Branagh reimagine BATB into something different with the focus on the Prince and his whole life, tragedy, and redemption.

That manip is way worse. Just because it looks like the cartoon doesn’t automatically make it better.

I don't really count the Alice movie as a live action remake. It has nothing in common with the cartoon except for being from the same source material.

Saw the trailer for this. It just looks meh to me. Again, it just looks like it will be BatB all over again. Honestly, of the 3 Disney remakes this year Dumbo by far looks the best to me. I'm actually interested in Dumbo. Very strong trailers. Granted, we haven't seen much of The Lion King yet, but both Aladdin and The Lion King just feel like bigger versions in live action, but are creatively weak.

Never saw the live action Cinderella. Liked The Jungle Book a lot, though.

Honestly I don't care if the new Lion King is just a shot-for-shot remake of the cartoon... the visuals are the only reason I'm planning to watch it. Well, that and nostalgia.

I mean the whole idea of a movie star or someone selling a movie has been proven not to mean much anymore
It's all about IPs and Aladdin as an IP would've been or has a lot of potential to be a huge success without major stars

I kinda feel bad for Ritchie and the cast. There's no way this movie will ever make people happy, they're screwed no matter what (aside from just not making it in the first place).
I don't think that's true at all. It's a false narrative. There's a lot they could do to make a good looking product. I don't feel bad for the filmmakers at all.

That is fine if that is what you're looking for, but for me, it isn't enough to simply be the same movie, just in live action. There needs to be something unique about it to draw me in. The Jungle Book felt like a different movie, while Beauty and the Beast felt like an inferior version. I want things that evoke more JB than BATB, and a shot for shot The Lion King just does nothing for me.

I like animated movies that were done in traditional way, that is using hand drawn animations which required many illustrators to work together for one animated movie, it has some artistic value and charm, not saying CGI animations is not artistic but it doesn't appeal to me that much. Sadly, hand drawn animation has become a lost art.

Hand drawn, CGI, live action comparison.

Man, Emma Watson really was miscast for that character, both in looks and singing.

this might seem petty of me but part of me is kinda glad it seems people might wanna skip Aladdin...because Godzilla KOTM comes out the following week and May is a bit of a movie gauntlet and the last thing I want is people getting movie fatigue early

Bingo.

Haven't seen a like/dislike bar like this since Ghostbusters

I call em like I see em, LOL! This movie just doesn't look good or interesting.
