Harry Potter - The Complete Series Thread

The way I see it, the Harry Potter films range from good to great. There isn't a bad one in the bunch. I suppose if I had to pick a "worst" one, I'd go with Chamber of Secrets. It's a fine film, but it's a little overbloated. It's perfect example of when a movie adaptation is too faithful to the book.

Chamber of Secrets was at the same time the most slavish adaption and one of the worst. It copy and pasted scenes and got others close, but the film has none of the tension or mounting dread that Rowling tried to convey in the book. In the book there is this genuine feeling of escalation with the heir and possibly a monster hiding amongst the students. The students and staff constantly worry about attack or death. When an attack happens the school gets more tense. I felt none of that in the film. Not even when I watched it as a 12 year old. Columbus basically copied the tone of Philosopher's Stone. COS needed a more mature tone like POA. The threat of the heir and monster should have been treated like Sirius Black or Columbus should have imagined Hogwart as Cold War America and the heir was a russian spy. Not literally, but bare with me and imagine Hogwarts is cold war America. And its staff and students are americans. Now imagine they believe one student is a cold war spy. How would cold war americans react if they thought their family or neighbors were a deadly enemy? Thats the sort of tension and fear that should have existed inside the castle.

I respect your opinion, but I couldn't disagree more.

You dont think the film should have had the paranoia and tension of the book with all the students and staff on edge?

My biggest gripe with CoS was that they gave Ron's Mudblood explanation to Hermione :funny:

I find that my ranking of the HP films changes a lot, aside from the top three and bottom one.

I know plenty love PoA for being darker, but it's still my least favorite adaptation. I felt like Cuaron really didn't understand the Potter universe.

I ship it.

A Force Awakens type model with the Harry Potter franchise would be the right way to go...a new trilogy or at least 4 films with a newer generation of characters that you could introduce and also introducing characters like Albus Severus, James Potter II, Lily Potter II, Hugo Weasley, Scorpius Malfoy, Rose Weasley, Teddy Lupin, etc.

Only if Rowling writes the scripts and retcons and erases the Epilogue in Deathly Hallows and Cursed Child. The Epilogue (the kids awful names) and Cursed Child are steaming ****.

But if its an adaption of Cursed Child then Im as interested in it as swine flu.

Agreed. I would like to see them only if they completely erase the epilogue and cursed child.

I just now started to read the Cursed Child. Just finished Part One. My god what a pile of ****! MY GOD!

Nice, so it'll be like the Friends Reunion but at Hogwarts.

They should just release this now as it’s the 20th anniversary of the first film.

Though I have to assume they want to hype Fantastic Beasts 3 which is why it’s playing New Years instead. Probably followed by a trailer.

I assume they haven't filmed it yet.

I'm going to watch the first flick tonight for the anniversary. I'm excited for this. If one good thing came out of the movies, it's the kids. They are all a credit to society.

Well, not all of them. :o

Not bad at all for a weaker entry in a long franchise. I will watch all of these again for the first time in a long time early next year.
