Wow! First time I heard of this news and holy crap from a buy/sell perspective that was a massive profit considering how much Saban got the franchise back from Disney 8 years ago. I didn't take into account operating costs through the 8 years. Only the buy and sell transactions.

On May 12, 2010, Haim Saban bought back the Power Rangers franchise from Disney for $43 million and announced plans to produce a new season of the television series.

In 2018, shortly after naming Hasbro the new master toy licensee, Saban Brands and Hasbro announced that Hasbro would acquire the franchise in a $522 million deal, with the first products from Hasbro becoming available in Spring 2019.

If/When we do get a reboot, I do think they need to go back to basics and utilize the original costumes (seen above - credit to the artist) though still with a slightly more modern twist - I don't quite know how, but the above costumes seem a bit ... tame?

Hasbro’s licensing plans for Power Rangers will resemble the playbook used for Transformers and My Little Pony, featuring a “very robust” line of products “coming from a number of different partners,” CEO Brian Goldner told analysts.

Hasbro acquired Power Rangers and other brands from Saban Brands for $522 million earlier this year. Goldner termed 2019 a “transition year” for Power Rangers as Hasbro introduces new products in March and April. The existing inventory of Power Rangers products is expected to be sold through retail by mid-2019 and new entertainment content and licensed products will arrive the following year, he said.

Many of Saban’s licensees also have developed My Little Pony and Transformers products, so Power Rangers’ shift to new ownership will be “relatively seamless,” Goldner said. Hasbro also has hired “key personnel” from Saban responsible for the Power Rangers brand, with Saban CEO Haim Saban serving as a creative consultant, he said.

Power Rangers’ will generate an operating profit similar to Hasbro’s other franchise brands and has a “significant opportunity for growth given where the brand had been most recently,” Goldner said. Hasbro will work with a film studio to develop a new Power Rangers movie as a follow-up to the 2017 release. In addition to Power Rangers, Hasbro also acquired Saban properties including My Pet Monster, Luna Petunia, Popples and Julius Jr.

Meanwhile Paramount and Hasbro’s All Spark Pictures have postponed release of a new Transformers 6 film until after 2019, due largely to the release of the Bumblebee film late this year, which pushed out plans for home entertainment. Transformers 6 had been scheduled for release on June 21, 2019.

It’s really a shame the movie last year didn’t get enough traction. It had a lot of heart and despite some missteps, was a worthy homage to the Mighty Morphin era.

If they do go with a sequel, hope they don’t start that jazz about making Tommy a girl.

I think should soft reboot and recast some of the characters, change up the tone and story structure.

Power Ranger 2017 was one of the biggest pleasant surprises of the year for me. I remember walking into it thinking, hoping even, that I was going to watch a complete utter piece of ****. I went in prepared to rip it a new one and I remember halfway through the film thinking "holy ****, this movie's actually good." I found the characters incredibly endearing and charming and when they finally morphed it felt really earned. The problem was people werent interested in a Breakfast Club approach to Power Rangers and I totally see why it bored the masses but I, personally totally dug the approach because it was well directed and acted and ironically the movie fell apart once the CGI climax kicked in.

I dont know how they'll justify a sequel though. The movie was an utter failure financially and it wasnt even a critical darling. For all intents and purposes theres no demand for more of this. But, hey, I aint gonna argue if somehow someway they can make it work. I wanna see more of this cast.

The cast is fine! Leave them as is. Their chemistry together was off the charts. All they need is a new, better director.

Going by the specialised fan forums, there's not that much vitriol towards it compared to say The Last Jedi.

It's a good/great episode of PR on an actual movie budget. First time in a long time, the characters even as stereotypes feel fleshed out. First time in a long time, the jokes and overall writing is smarter / the acting and direction is better than it has any right to be for a kid's show adaptation let alone a PR adaptation. When even Zordon gets a character arc, that's when you know the filmmakers were legitimately invested.

That's why you might hear/read folks being pleasantly surprised; particularly for those who aren't as big or at all PR fans...and that's a first in general at this scale in reeling people outside of the target demo of young consumers and dedicated niche community.

I actually really liked the cast so I wouldn't mind them coming back. Just needs a better director, story, and aesthetic. Let's see how Hasbro handles this. And also how long it takes.

Israelite's a good director, the problem was his focus was not on kickass Power Ranger action. His focus was on character which is why the movie pleasantly surprised a lot of us. The kids felt real and likeable and their chemistry and banter made the movie pleasant to watch even though there was barely any action happening.

We just need a director/writer who can balance both action and character development at the same time. With the origin out the way the sequel has room to be much better paced and balanced so that the audience doesn't get bored.

I enjoyed the film, so I don't mind a sequel. Though I hated the design of the zords....so that would have to be changed up. Costumes could use some streamlining, and definitely need more action.

Would be a shame to start over. The first film wasn't perfect, but it still laid a really great foundation in terms of character development. The designs could use some work and the action needs to be bumped up, but keep the other stuff in tact.

They don't specifically say "sequel" but a "follow-up" to the 2017 movie.

It could just mean "The next movie after the 2017 movie"

What I really loved were the high school scenes, where the kids were just being kids. I actually think this movie was far more successful in invoking the spirit of John Hughes, than another teen superhero film, that also attempted the same feat.

I feel exactly the same. I also feel that...other teen superhero film fell short of evoking John Hughes while this one captured it perfectly.
