The culture is Arab-esq, but the way the Dornish are described, Salty, Stoney etc the variety of their ethnicity was more akin to the Spanish.

I don't know what you think that proves. White people can come from Chile, and he is a white Hispanic.

Yes, but Oberyn isn't a Stony Dornishman (who look pretty much like everybody else), he's from among the darker-hued Salty Dornish (not quite as dark as the Sandy Dornish).

why is this even an issue when he is clearly meant to be a different race.

I believe GRRM himself stated that Dorne was inspirated in Spain's historical ethnicity as a whole. Meaning both the moorish western Spain and the "white" frank Spain in the east..... If that makes sense

Sorry for the english

Casting white people in roles for non-white actors is a rather persistent problem in Hollywood.

Exactly. It's always been that way, Stoney Dornishmen with lighter skin, Salty Dornishmen with Olive skin, and Sandy Dornishmen with very dark skin.

It's clearly inspired by Spain.

I am loving the idea of the added Craster's Keep material.

It is only a problem if the actor isn't awesome in the role. If they cast the right actor in terms of performance, this is a non-issue imo.

You also need to tell me where you have seen Oberyn depicted as you have described. I just did a quick google search, and his depiction is pretty persistent.

you literally just said he was only half white.
Uh, no I didn't. I said he was a white Hispanic. "Hispanic" isn't a race (despite often being used as if it is), it's a cultural umbrella. You can be a white Hispanic or a brown Hispanic or an Afro-Hispanic. He's a white Hispanic. Cameron Diaz is Hispanic, for instance.

No, it's not. "The right actor" is a fig leaf used to justify casting white people in the few roles that exist for non-whites. There's any number of right actors for any role. Whitewashing is not confined only to casting bad white actors -- what they did to Aang, Katara and Sokka in The Last Airbender would have been wrong even if the kids they cast had been good.

And I call bull. Did you lose your crap over Xaro Xhoan Daxos? How about Heimdall in Thor? You either call it both ways, or not at all.

And did you really just bring up Avatar? The movie that made an entire nation Indian just cause? :funny:

There was a lot of *****ing about the Martells not looking Persian enough or something. Which is idiotic because they're supposed to be Mediterranean.

First thing I thought when I saw the Dorne sets and Oberyn is how Mediterranean and Roman it all looked. Personally I always got an Arabian vibe from Dorne and the Martell's in the books, but I like the look they've went for so I don't mind.

I like it all. Season 4 is looking as good as Season 1. :hubba

so how is he just a white actor cast in a foreign role if he is a mixed race?

seems rather perfect IMO.

and who the **** watched the last airbender

I am feeling Emmy #2 Peter "Fracking" Dinklage.

Sometimes I get the feeling that if D&D could put Tyrion in a wig to get him a best lead actress nom then they would lol

I hope we get some Nikolaj love in future seasons.

When you want to complain such things are trivial. We have an agenda!!!!

I did. And I regret it. By the way, seeing the new Transformers, Katara grew up. :wow:
