Season 4 Introduction

Encouraged by the Red Wedding slaughter in the Riverlands that wiped out many of their Stark nemeses, the Lannisters’ hold on the Iron Throne remains intact … but can they survive their own egos, as well as new and ongoing threats from the south, north and east? While an unbowed Stannis Baratheon continues to rebuild his army in Dragonstone, a more immediate danger comes from the south, as Oberyn Martell, the Lannister-loathing “Red Viper of Dorne,” arrives at King’s Landing to attend Joffrey’s wedding to Margaery Tyrell, and perhaps act on an ulterior agenda. In the north, a depleted Night’s Watch seems overmatched against the inexorable Wall advances of Mance Rayder’s army of wildlings, which in turn is being trailed by an even more formidable foe: the undead White Walkers. As if that weren’t enough, Daenerys Targaryen, accompanied by her menacing trio of dragons and army of Unsullied, is poised to liberate Meereen, the largest city in Slaver’s Bay, which could ultimately provide her with enough ships to sail to Westeros and reclaim the Iron Throne.

You know we may get a ton of story stretched this season, just like lots of added material and some of book 3 may bleed into season 5.

They can see to characters who were skimmed over, then. It does seem stretched; I thought Brienne would set off at the end of episode 1/2.

Hmm..no mention of the wedding. They really aren't going to stretch it out past the 2nd episode?

So, I'm nearly done reading the first book. I've been impressed with how close season one has been to it, really. Anyway, I just got past the part where Cat meets with Frey. And I came away with a different perception of Walder Frey in book one than I remember in Season One.

Whereas I thought he was weird and creepy in season one, in the chapter I read where he's introduced...he comes across like an old man whose literally lost his mind. Like, I think he may be suffering from some form of dementia, and he seems to get sidetracked and forget what he's talking about and then rant on for a while before getting back on track and then ranting on again about something else.

Just curious if I'm the only one who got that read on him in the first book? I was a little surprised it.

I think the wedding is in episode 2, they're just being careful in order to not spoil anything. But it does seem like they're stretching the remaining of Book 3 a lot, after reading the book i also see that sometimes the chapters (expecially Dany ones) have a lot of things happening in a single go, like the part when she meets Daario, he helps her and when the slaves are finally freed all takes place in a single chapter, while in the show it took some more episodes.

I wonder if one of the reasons for the plot being stretched like this is to get more time for GRRM to release the next books, though i think that trying to put the major event in Episode 9 may also be a major factor.

I am starting to wonder how "normal" this thread is going to be even when the new episodes start to air. It has gotten so odd, it might not be able to go back to "normal". :funny:

There should be a GIF embargo when the show is airing.

So I'm 67 pages into the first book and it's really good so far... In terms of show chronology I haven't even gotten to the end of the first episode! Quality-wise I'd say they're equal, it's tough to say. I would have liked to see Ned's jealousy of his dead brother explored in the show, though.

Hmmm, I'm almost done with book one myself. Can't say I ever read into his relationship with his brother as jealousy, though. Seemed more like he genuinely admired him to me.

What parts of which books do you think Season 4 will cover?

I know you didnt ask me but I would say the back half of book 3 and some scenes from book 5, primarily dany, Bran and Jon, but really it seems that a ton of book 3 is going to be stretched out a great deal, I have a feeling Tyrions story arc is going to be massively larger than even what it was in the books as to save some of the juicer bits of the third book and they will be adding quite a bit to Jons story as well to stretch this season out. I'd also wager that Briennes entire story will be cut in half but then paced at the speed of a snail so that we can have her do stuff in Season 5 as well. I also wouldn't be suprised if Jaime's story gets accelerated so as to have him play a much bigger role going into Season 4.

The problem is Book 4 is so not focused on anything really that we have had in the show so far that finding a way to adapt certain things will be very hard while keeping your average viewer interested with the show due to the lack of main character appearances. I do think though that with the retooling i mentioned above you can still have the main characters show up but have the primary Dorne story show up and have it not seem such a deprature from previous seasons. Plus there is so much cersei in book for that most main characters will show up in some fashion.

Just my thoughts.

I think Jaime should task her with hunting down the rest of the Brave Companions. That would add more to her book plotline. Some of Book 4's more important Kings Landing plot points will probably be intercut with the Wall and Dany's stuff.

Well don't forget she runs into gendry so that will be like an episodes worth of material alone and stuff with certain "monks" if you will and the whole biter thing will have to be changed now.

Who are the Brave Companions? Did I miss them in Season 3? Or was that another name for the BWB? So confused!
