Well in terms of show Tywin I agree with you, I can see the same Tywin who pleasantly conversed with Arya as tending to Tommen.

In terms of the books I genuinely think he was too broken after Joanna to properly feel anything in that way towards people. Oberyn's story of how he visited Casterly Rock in particular gives the impression that the man went through a pretty extreme moral event horizon, and Kevan alludes to that as well in his internal monologue about how he took up duties before.

We get some interesting stuff from his siblings about how he was their rock during childhood, but there's an even-handed level with that saying that he is how he is for a reason, yet none of them defend his cruelty after Joanna's death. Genna's story was incredibly sweet, yet even she says that she loved him for that past kindness and not the person he became. So it seems like all these people who knew him best and loved him still had to admit he wasn't exactly in a great place during the present, it's that coupled with his actions towards his children and others that make me think he's not emotional capable anymore in that sense.

Yeah, I can see where you're coming from. It's a sound argument.

I don't know how Viserys beat Joffrey there. Viserys was just a stupid spoiled brat. Joffrey was a sick sadomasochist who actually killed a woman and not to mention was responsible for the deaths of Ned Stark and Robert's bastard children. The worst thing Viserys did was threaten Daenerys. Viserys is nothing compared to Joffrey. Having said that, yes, his death scene was awesome. But it was nowhere near as satisfying as Joffrey's.

A man who casually talks of using his younger sister as simple currency and would happily see her destroyed in his quest for power. I'm telling you, I'm struggling with the sympathy here. :cwink:

Personally i love the fact Tywin went to Tommen.

Viserys vs Joffrey comes down more to their context. Viserys was at one point at least somewhat admirable, but pretty much his entire life was desperation and clawing for both survival and power, so some display of determination and a "I have nothing left to lose bravery" is kind of to be expected of anyone who lives for any amount of time. Joffrey, on the other hand, never left the lap of luxury and seems to prove that no matter how evil you already are, power will still find a way to corrupt you. Both men show cowardice at different times, but on the show at least, Viserys mostly just shows it when cornered in a tent by a certified badass knight and later overcompensates for both his pride and shame, ending up with a horrific death. Joffrey runs from the Blackwater because Mommy gives him an excuse, and cowers before an admittedly badass little girl.

Maybe Viserys would have been more Targaryen-cowardly, with at least some base cunning and jealousy over his own power, but we don't know. There still both dirtbags who died shockingly appropriate deaths.

Imagine if Melisandre saw this? holy sh**

Watched Sundays episode last night. Amazing.

Who here has read the books? I am considering buying them. My friend keeps telling me to read them. He's finished all the novels.

Maybe Tywin sees Tommen as his only hope to restore his name since Jaimee rufused Castle Rock in the first episode?

A great montage gif of the spoiler showing how the show captured [blackout]Joffrey's death[/blackout]

I never said Viserys was a sympathetic character. I only said Joffrey was worse.

God, it's weird bringing up Viserys now. It feels like ancient history at this point, as does most of season 1. The show's come such a long way in only a few years.

Season 4 is reliving the glory days of season 1. After two uneven seasons, Season 4 has returned to the consistent awesomeness of season 1, at least so far.

I strongly suggest you read them. If you like GoT world then you will love ASoIaF book series. It is Got's world but more in depth.

However, I advice you wait until season 4 is over ( at least read books 1 and 2 if you just can't wait)

I love the world Martin created. I will pick them up today and start.

Where is season 4 in regards to the books?

Later half of book 3, bits from book 4 and bits from book 5.

Book 4 and 5 will be finished by Season 5.

Season 4 is the 2nd half of A storm of Swords.

Finally got around to watching the episode (I was out of town this weekend so it took me a bit before I could get around to watching it) and I'm now caught up on this thread (more than 10 pages of posts to read)

Suffice it to say, this sums up my feelings very well:

*lol* any sadness I have is mainly that I know Tyrion is going to go through some hell now (and I like him....and I hate seeing the characters I like put through misery. I know, I know, than this probably isn't the show for me :oldrazz: :funny:)

Then I shall read up to book 4. There is no way I'm finishing 4 1,000+ page novels before the end of this season anyway.

Is this thread filled with spoilers (from book readers)? If so I'll tread lightly around these parts. I hate spoilers!

I dont think its possible for them to squeeze Book 4 and 5 into one season. probably goes two seasons.

We are getting better at it. Hopefully now that the new season has started, the book readers will learn to control their urges. :D

I find listening to the audiotapes go much faster.

Eh I get bored with audiotapes. I tend to fall asleep listening to them lol. I'd rather have the book in my hands. I can get the box set (first 5 books) for like $35 at Barnes and Noble in paperback.

If I really like the novels maybe ill get the nice hardcovers afterwards.

Has Martin finished writing the entire series or is he still working on them? I heard he told HBO how he wants the show to end if he passes away for whatever reason....so I was wondering if he had the books done...

I feel like a broke record on this. But yes, the big finales of Book 4 and 5 will come at the end of season 5. All signs point to it. A good portion of book 4 and 5 will be incorporated this season as well, and we already have seen some material that points to this.

It will be simple. The travelogue and lack of progression in AFFC and ADWD will cause them to be cutdown quite a bit. If they didn't, there would be long stretches were the stars of the show don't appear.

By season 6, we will probably be ahead of the books, unless TWOW actually gets printed next year.

It won't...3 more years:ikyn

I thought Season 3 was more or less equal to Season 1, but Season 4 could definitely trump them all yet. Hell, I like them all equally, but I will admit that Season 2 is the weakest.

As a sidenote, I watched some Season 1 episodes over the weekend and the one thing it doesn't have on the later seasons is the cinematography. Not that it wasn't good in the first place, but the show just looks so much better from Season 2 onward.

I don't doubt it. I lost faith in GRRM a while ago on these matters. What I find more sad is it feels like the show will probably have a stronger ending then the books.
