HBO's Game of Thrones - - Part 16

By far the mosting upsetting thing I have seen in the show. And Cersei, the ****, smiling after a guy's head is burst to pieces.

Anyone making a gif out of it and I will hunt you down. :cmad: :csad:

It's a brutal world, and Cersei isn't a saint to begin with. She's seen more than her fair share of gruesomeness over the years. They played her down significantly though. In the books she actually shrieks NO! when Oberyn catapults over the Mountain.

I gotta say, Clarke's performance when she banished Ser Jorah was superb. It's one of those things that are pretty charging in the book but when you actually see it on screen performed, wow.

@WildChild: Seeing similar reactions elsewhere, and that's the first thing that came to mind, I don't care if it's in the book or not, it's just really poor writing. It's the oldest story trope ever, the buffoon waxing lyrical, talking & talking when he could just finish it.

The good excuse for here is that he desperately wants a confession, but come on, Oberyn is a smart guy, and to have him just get f*** like that is ridiculous, laughable & really poor. He has a goddam spear, he doesn't have to be so close.

I think the show is getting rid off too many major characters, with a couple of more coming your way before this season ends. I think is well known from what i heard that the quality of the books starts to go down from here, when you kill to many of your characters you are unpredictable but at the same time you tie yourself into a corner. You have less and less interesting characters to work with and you become a cliche, the author that will kill whatever good character is left.

Well, Oberyn just dismantled a huge man and he's got that buzz- that adrenaline rush. In that sense, I think it's understandable that he'd just keep going like that and not even caring how close he is. As far as he's concerned, The Mountain's flat on his back and he doesn't care. He's too into this and relishing in the moment to realise what he's doing.

OH. MY. GOD. :wow: Holy hell, that was brutal!

Well, you can rationalize all you want but it's one of the oldest tricks in the book, you know, like the bad guy pointing a gun at the hero, in real life, he'd probably just pop him right here & then, but no, the guy has to be all smart & explain to the hero that he's done for, and then bam, a miracle happens.

It's just poor writing.

@Jaspertian: agreed, I really have a hard time caring about a lot of the characters, and it's just lazy at some point, going for the shock value is so overdone after a while, you can only do so much of that.

It seems Khaleesi's storyline is annoying a lot of people as well, it felt disconnected to me from the very first episode she shows up, I just can't care about her and hope she's going to be crushed when she reaches King's Landing, like in a few years :D

Man, this is why The Mountain is my favorite character. That battle was awesome.

I don't know that it is well known or agreed upon that the books go downhill from here. :( I certainly wouldn't agree to that. They wouldn't have sold like they did if they had.

But killing the Mountain wasn't his only objective. He needed the Mountain alive to get the confession out of him. And he kinda did get the confession. It was about humiliating the Lannisters in the public. He wasn't just going to kill him. We wanted him to kill him but thats not what he's about.

I think it's a great version of the oldest trick in the book and actually makes sense, no matter how frustrating it was to see him momentarily let his guard down.

Therefore I believe that you are simplifying this far too much.

I get it.But with such a deadly opponent it is simply to poor a choice to make. For awhile now the unpredictability of this show is starting to become predictable if that makes sense.

No, he was still an idiot. If he wanted to get a confession fine. But then either:

A. Disable The Mountain so that he's completely helpless and can't fight back.

or

B. Keep your distance you magnificently accented moron.

I get what Oberyn wanted to do, I get it, but he was stupid. Poor writing.

Hell, he had a SPEAR, he could have stayed at a distance and like shoved the spear in one of his hands or something, anything but like parading 1 meter away from him.

Plus he was partially drunk.

I too couldn't care less about grey worm sub plot save that wasted time for some dragons who by the way are non existent this season

It's just the tragedy of Oberyn's character that in the moment of potentially his greatest victory, he lets his lust for revenge get the better of him, much like the tragedy of Ned's character was being an honour-bound dumbass. :o

But I digress, that was really hard to take. Definitely liked Oberyn better in the show than in the book, but I guess that's no wonder what with him receiving more screen time and all. Credit really must go to Pedro Pascal, he really made the character.

Well, at least we got to see Missandei naked. :oldrazz:

I wouldn't say Oberyn is stupid. I would say Oberyn was cocky. Time and time again you see characters under estimate their enemies in Game Of Thrones and end up paying the price for it.

No, it's not poor writing. He wanted The Mountain to confess to killing the Targaryen children and raping Elia. He's spent the last 15 years waiting for this moment. Everyone knows The Mountain is guilty but he's allowed to run roughshod simply because he does Tywin Lannister's dirty work. The point of the fight is that, for one fleeting moment, you think justice will be served for once after seeing Ned beheaded, Winterfell burned, and Robb Stark slaughtered with his men. A sadistic murderer and rapist is about to die but Oberyn's personal lust for revenge grabs defeat from the jaws of victory. Calling this "poor writing" just misses the point about the story.

I was not too fond of Oberyn in the books; however, Pascal made me really like the character, which made his death painful. I also disagree with the claim that the books have become less interesting since the death of a few top players; if anything, they've become more interesting, since a) cleared up some room b) the surviving characters have grown c) equally interesting characters have emerged.

Why am I the first one to say that Nathalie Emmanuel is absolutely Gorgeous! So hot!
