I don't know that it is well known or agreed upon that the books go downhill from here. :( I certainly wouldn't agree to that. They wouldn't have sold like they did if they had.

I haven't read them myself, but i have been spoiled of the overall story line even to the fifth book. From what they told me it really starts to drag in some places, and the quality overall starts going down a bit.

Its hard to keep the pace after so long in any medium, and if he really wants to do a 8th book, and the show is almost catching up to him, then the author has shoot himself in the foot.

The show has a very different schedule , when the 6th is done the show probably will be in the fifth book so what do you do there? you cant wait for him to finish, some of the actors are probably quite bored of they roles by now and want to try different projects. If the producers have the overall story line they should continue with the show. It cant run for 20 seasons and if the author didn't finish the book in time, then too bad, the show has over taken those books by now.

Yes, he's too cocky about the notorious mountain of a man with the freakish strength who's done terrible things, and did I mention that he's really damn strong? You shouldn't be "cocky" until he head is no longer attached to his body. Again, it's not Oberyn wanting a confession that's the problem. It's how the specifics of the scene played out that's the problem. When you can think of like ten other ways that he could have gotten his confession AND not stupidly put himself in danger like that, then it's poor writing.

I wouldn't say the books go downhill. Most people hated A Feast for Crows because it took 5 years to come out and didn't have any Jon, Tyrion, Daenerys, Bran, or Davos chapters. It introduced a lot of new POV characters who you hadn't met before, so you didn't really care about them.

A Dance with Dragons was good, but some character's stories took awhile to get going. After reading Dance, I came to appreciate Feast more.

I agree if he wanted to get a confession he was going about it in the dumbest way possible.

Agreed, it seems some of you really don't get why we're saying Oberyn was stupid, WE GET WHAT HE WAS TRYING TO DO, THANK YOU VERY MUCH.

Like Loki says, he could have done what he wanted to do safely and in so many other ways, poor writing indeed. He could have stayed at a safe distance and stab his legs with the spear.

There was no way the Mountain would have confessed anyway.

Just so we're clear, this is a complaint about the way he went about it in the book as well? Because it was basically the same thing.

I lucked out in that I came in late to the game, so to speak. The fifth book came out just as I started to read so I didn't have to wait. That might have made the books seem better to me, I guess. I am not going to argue that the books don't drag because they do but it wasn't enough to make me say they suck or anything. I didn't give up on reading them.

This death should feel like a tragedy. But for me it just feel's like a fool got himself killed.I thought Oberyn was better then that.

He could have stayed at a safe distance and stab his legs with the spear.

How could he have done that when he was relishing in his success and also his rage? He didn't care. Oberyn's always been so wild and carefree. That's a great excuse for his mistake.

He did kind of confess, even though not fully.

He confessed because he was crushing his face and was taunting him in his last moments.

Anyway, we just have completely opposed views of this scene. What's for sure is that there a lot of similar reactions, the shock value is not going to work after doing it so much, it just feels lazy to me, and I know it's the exact same thing in the book.

Characters making bad choices isn't poor writing. Is it bad writing that Batman just hasn't killed Joker after all he's done? If you want to see poor writing, watch Amazing Spider-Man 2.

Exactly. This is quite inline with Oberyn's character. He is confident, vengeful, and yes indulgent. He let his emotions take a hold of himself there and his mind was not on the fight.

:hehe:

You know, as gut-wrenching and disheartening it is to see characters dieing brutally in this universe, it's uncanny how more often than not they bring it upon themselves.

.....really were going to try and make this about The Amazing Spider-Man 2.

Totally uncalled for & absolutely not pertaining to the discussion.

It's just stupid, and has been done SO MANY TIMES before, I think it stands out more here because the series has gone for the shock factor a LOT of times, and it just gets tedious to me at least, and to many others as well.

GRRM seems to love taking out likable characters and that could be problematic on the long term.

Did people honestly expect the Red Viper to win?

He could have tried to have done it safely but you are never safe with The Mountain ever really so it's not really an option. It's not poor writing when a character who has done nothing since he arrived at Kings Landing except talk about killing The Mountain have the opportunity to do so and relish in it. Should Oberyn been more mindful, maybe, would it have helped him? Maybe not.

I look at it like the Princess Bride scene, could Inigo played that differently? Yeah but revenge is a powerful motivator and it causes people to do a great of stupid things.

My point about ASM2 was not meant to be a personal attack. I actually kind of liked the movie but it was the first thing I could think of as an example of poor writing and it had plenty. If you don't like that, then there's the Star Wars prequels.

He kills off likable characters because they often find themselves in these dangerous situations, usually from their own decisions. Why should they be thrown a deus ex machina so they can get out of it? THAT is poor writing.

When we will have samples of the Season 4 Score? Any ideas?

Oberyn was running on pure emotion, and well that is what Oberyn is, pure emotion. Why question his actions when he was clearly acting irrational? Did all the scenes explaining his reasoning for being there go lost on some people?

To even question it is to miss the entire point. It isn't bad writing, it is fantastic writing.

I think I am going to need blood pressure medication. :o

Darth again, why am I not surprised.

Adopting the arrogant & condescending attitude is really NOT the way to go for you here. Missing the entire point, I, and others here get the point, we just think it's lazy writing, simple as that.

But hell, it's like everything, genius to some people, awful to others.

Well considering I spend a lot of fracking time in this thread, why would it be surprising? Not everything revolves around you Tim.

I love when people throw out terms like "arrogant" or "condescending" when they are labeling work "lazy" because they decide to ignore what actually happens. That is the height of arrogance, and well it is also kind of lazy.
