HBO's True Detective - Part 1

The odds are in Breaking Bad's favor if for no other reason than the Emmy voters' preference for monotony.

Not putting this in the miniseries category is questionable as ****.

True Detective blew Breaking Bad out of the water.

It may turn out to be the smart move but there's no question it would've swept the mini-series categories. Now even nominations will be harder to obtain.

With drama they are up against the cast and crews of Breaking Bad, Game of Thrones, Mad Men, Masters of Sex, Downton Abbey, House of Cards, Homeland and The Good Wife. Plus Boardwalk Empire, The Blacklist and Scandal could nab some nominations.

For mini-series they would've been up against American Horror Story: Coven, Dancing on the Edge, Fargo, Sherlock and The White Queen.

I enjoyed True Detective's 8 episodes but they still don't top the final 8 of Breaking Bad. The people freaking out about True Detective to me were those that hadn't gotten around to watching other great dramas from the past five years and just happened to stumble upon it because of the cast.

Breaking Bad will take home another Emmy for Outstanding Drama Series, Matthew McConaughey will nab Outstanding Actor.

and if crazy ass Matthew doesn't win everything he possibly can, awards shouldn't exist.

It's a bold move by HBO. The best drama category is the prestige category of the emmy's, the best mini-series doesn't have that cache which is why FX submits AHS there to better its chances.

I see what HBO is doing, it'd be a huge upset if this won out over BB and this is honestly the only shows that has a shot at it. Not to mention Mconaughey vs Cranston, I don't even know what to think?

I'm a huge Breaking Bad fan...

Love Breaking Bad. Love Cranston. But True Detective deserves this, along with Matthew! Rust Cohle might be my favorite tv character of all time, and thats only after 8 episodes.

The Emmys are trying to destroy me this year :(

Last year I truly believed up until now that Breaking Bad should win again this year by god True Detective deserves it just as much. Cranston vs McConaughey for the Actor.

Going to be a tough year.

I would love to see an alternate reality where Rust and Marty are on the hunt for this mythical "Heisenberg", or the man with the black hat.

It should have been nominated for mini series. If American Horror Story was nominated for miniseries than so should this. This show is a different animal than Breaking Bad and so there isn't anything to be gained from comparing them.

:wow:

editors of youtube unite and make a series out of this!

Ugh I guess the True Detective vs Breaking Bad argument hasn't even reached its zenith yet. Can't we just acknowledge they're both amazing? I just hope if it does win for drama then at least Cranston wins for actor or vice versa. Sorry but Breakit Bad's final eight episodes were a ****ing phenomenon.

As much as I loved True Detective, I hope Breaking Bad ends up on top. TR will have many more seasons to come, and will probably win dozens more Emmys, but this is BrBa's last shot and it really deserves it, especially since it was suddenly thrust into the critical and audience perspective after years of just being a small indie show. All those years of build-up and acclaim, to only have it lose to a brand new show, would be pretty disappointing IMO.

Exactly! I'm in no way saying that True Detective doesn't deserve it, especially Matthew but, Breaking Bad was just something else. I don't get how they're so easily compared. Like, they couldn't be more different to me.

HBO haven't won an Emmy for best drama series since the last part of Sopranos and if they think TD has a shot against Breaking Bad's part 2, then I can't say I blame them for trying their best.

So you would say True Detective had one or multiple episodes better than Ozymandias?

Better than Ozymandias maybe not but episode 4 of the season with the drug house home invasion was close. I haven't felt that intense watching an episode since Ozymandias. I actually preferred TD's season finale to BB's.

I didn't know HBO hasn't won in best drama since the sopranos? so I guess I can see why they figured TD was their best shot and submitted it as a drama series vs mini.

If this was vs BB 5.1 I'd give this to TD but 5.2 is tough.

Well, there's always episode 4. 7 and 8 were excellent/favorites for me, too.

Top 3 episodes for me, right here. I'd probably have it in order like this: 8, 4 and 7. That season finale though... I have never been more terrified for two television characters lives than I was while watching the finale that night it premièred. So much was on the line and it felt like it was so easy for them to fail with that colossus of a man towering over them. All-in-all though, the whole series was perfect IMO because it was a slow-burn and it allowed you to be the detective along with Hart and Cohle, trying to uncover the deeper cult meanings that are just buried beneath the surface. One of my favourite scenes was when Cohle visits Tuttle, you can tell the guy's a two-faced cult leader but Cohle knows that he needs more evidence in order to put him away. It's an intense scene to watch when you're watching the series over again because you realize just as subtly as Cohle does that Tuttle might just be one of the men in the videotape. This series has me hooked like no other, I'm still watching them as they come on HBO every week because it's so addicting trying to unravel the bigger mysteries that are left unturned (and rightfully so, as no detective could solve all of the world's problems with a flip of the switch like in Criminal Minds or CSI, it takes more time, more risk to take down these potentially protected criminals).

Just finished this and wow, I might buy this Blu-ray set for the commentary and SF's. I watched the last 4 episodes today and just had my mind blown. This show is amazing, I hope we get like Sam Rockwell next year and someone like Gary Oldman.

Not to start an argument or anything like that but, in my most humble of opinions of course, Ozymandias is the single great episode of television ever. The drug raid at the end of episode four of True Detective was the single best choreographed and shot scene of any show ever. Anybody agree or disagree with this?

I love Sam Rockwell! :D

I can see his point of view, sometimes a smaller one-off story is more appealing to some than a larger continuous narrative.
