HBO's True Detective - Part 1

There might only be three seasons of the series according to Nic Pizzolatto and none of the casting rumors are true, or any of the other rumors for that matter. The only things that are accurate are what's been officially stated.

With its anthology nature allowing a complete change of cast, story and tone every season, HBO's "True Detective" could theoretically go on indefinitely. The show's creator Nic Pizzolatto however says that he can't see the series going beyond 2016.

Appearing at the Banff World Media Festival, Nic Pizzolatto told the Calgary Herald that he doesn't really have plans for the show to last beyond a third season due to the show's demanding work schedule:

"I can't imagine I would do this more than three years. I mean, I'd like to have a regular TV show. We'll have some fixed sets, regular actors and I could bring in people to help and I don't have to be there every second. It'd be great."
He adds that it's the very difficult to produce due to the anthology nature of the show, which requires him to start from scratch each season and write every episode, and it limits how much he can do:

"It can't have any growing pains like a regular first season. If it works it has to work right out of the box. That's incredibly exhausting. I mean, the job is exhausting to begin with, but it's doubly exhausting and I'm writing every episode."
Asked about the rumored names so far mentioned for the show's second season., Pizzolatto has dismissed all the reports:

"I've seen entertainment reporters say 'My sources say'. There are no sources. There's me and two other guys and they don't even know what I'm doing. I've talked to one person about it, possibly, and that has been it. We haven't cast anybody. I have a secret list and that's it."
Pizzolatto adds that he intends to lock down a director first before he gets into casting.

As long as I have HBO GO, I don't need the Blu Rays.

That's fine but you won't get the same special features i don't think which HBO home video is usually pretty good at providing for their shows.

I'm going to be very interested to hear some of the episode commentaries.

So today I finished all 8 episodes of True Detective. Freaking phenomenal. It was just amazing. The second season is going to have a hell of a lot to live up to.

So both Matthew and Woody got nods for best actor in a series, which i think is well deserved. I know that matthew seemed to get most of the attention but upon rewatching, it's really the interplay and the reactions of Hart to Cohle that really make it.

I don't think you could appreciate Cohle as much without Hart trying to bring him down to earth a bit.

They both deserved a nom. One of them is going to win.

They should have also made a category for Most Spectacular Breasts just for Daddario.

I just re-watched that episode last night and I have to say

True Detective’s Future

Much to the room's chagrin, the pair had no casting announcements to share. Lombardo promised that those much-speculated names will be revealed shortly, perhaps even in the next week. And while he says he hasn’t felt obligated to cast more A-list stars – careful to note that Matthew McConaughey wasn’t the star he became care of his Oscar-winning turn in Dallas Buyers Club – those hired likely will be well-known actors. As for the decision to submit it as a drama rather than a miniseries, Lombardo noted of its move, which netted 12 noms for the network: "Nic [Pizzolatto] pitched an anthology series, we marketed it as an anthology series and we think about it as an anthology series." What he could reveal from the stage: he's received the first two scripts and he's ecstatic: “The two scripts we have are -- I hate to jinx it -- but they are more exciting than the first season."

Gah. Stop teasing me. I need this already.

Woody was great.... Matthew was spectacular.

Oh yes, The Wrap is mentioning Colin Farrell & Taylor Kitsch as two of the possible leads, this excites me very much. Farrell is an excellent actor (when he chooses the right roles) & Kitsch is so underrated, especially of late, he's shown countless times in Friday Night Lights, The Bang Bang Club, The Normal Heart, Lone Survivor & Savages that he's a very gifted actor (and apparently, he's getting some good notice for The Grand Seduction).

Which is pretty much the comment you're going to see everywhere online. Woody & Matt set the bar very high, and it's not often you get these two in a tv show, so you could cast anyone else, it'd be considered a downgrade by everyone on the internet, but if they nail it, who cares?

Kitsch is a better actor than his terrible movie choices would make you think.

I like both of them but that seems like a bit of downgrade.

Hindsight etc etc. Honestly we didn't necessarily know what Mathew/Woody were going to do together.

And if you haven't watch In Bruges. Collin can hang right there with the best.

I know Kitsch is pretty underrated. But i still don't think he's that good. I'll keep an open mind though.

I love it. Two underdogs. Farrell, who is such an underrated actor really has been incredibly fortunate despite never really being in a hit movie, is resilient and I always respected that.

Kitsch is even more surprising but this is gonna work. People need to stop looking at John Carter and Battleship anyway. He's not a bad actor, just has had bad choice in roles, yet recently is in a slow upswing, which will surely be propelled by this show. If Kitsch works in this show, goodbye forever to the John Carter and Battleship connotations that belong to his name.

Both very smart and exciting choices, career and talent wise. Can't wait to see the rest.

Yep, but unfortunately, a lot of people don't know that.

You can say whatever you want about his character in FNL, but his performance throughout the series has been nothing short of great. And he's delivered in spades lately as I said in The Normal Heart (for those who saw it), Lone Survivor, etc.

Problem is, he was in two big blockbusters close to one another and now he's being catalogued by a good chunk of the internet, happens all the time.

Anyway, they're not gonna cast anybody in this, Pizzolato obviously has some big standards, so I think the guy can be trusted if those choices turn out to be true.

@Dr Jones: Kitsch doesn't regret John Carter & Battleship, he said so himself, it was a big break for both, he took his chance and it seems that it's paying off after a while, so many people said he'd be buried after the two bombs, and nope, never happened. I just wish those who only know him by those two movies (and he's not even bad in them) can stop judging him this way.
