that was so sincere and heartfelt. its nice to see that from someone who actually got to know him. instead of all the media blips on tv.

Either way, the media should have waited until the toxicology reports come back because:

(1) No illegal drugs were found in the apartment.
(2) Heath was described as a cheerful person who lived for his daughter, not some miserable person who wanted to end his own life.
(3) He had pneumonia, he had extreme exhaustion according to the NY Times reporter who interviewed him in November.

Until the toxicology comes back, they should have given him the benefit of the doubt instead of smearing his name. The first impression from the media often influences public opinion.

Unfortunately that's the name of the game in the media. The notion of ethics I'm afraid is lost on much of the media in this day and age. The media sell their stories by sensationalizing them and it is quite a ruthless profession.

I was championed as a writer when I was in school. But by the time college came around two years ago, I had caught on to what the media really is. I still love writing columns but I could never lower my standards to sell newspapers. Thus, I wouldn't last long in the profession.

It is interesting the last thing you said and it is a very good point. It sickens me the lack of ethics in the media, it is a big part of studying the profession! I fear when this tragedy is ruled accidental that there will always be a cloud over Heath because the media jumped the gun.

To me it seems a lot of the media hasn't done it's research on Heath or TDK. Cnn was talking about how Heath's passing will affect TDK and the showed the following poster and the tagline and how WB had to change it.

You're kidding!

which they always do without hesitation.

Yep and the media will never be held up on this **** because they apparently represent free speech. Take where I am from for instance, Ireland. The media broke the church's stranglehold on Ireland and became the new representatives of the public. The media in Ireland is as bad as anywhere else but it will never be held up for gross misconduct because of free speech.

of course, so they can spread their slanderess garbage and people will believe almost anything they read because "its in the paper, it has to be true."

Fickle is too small a word. Tabloids really sicken me. Say there was a murder and rape and the cops have a number of suspects. One particular suspect who is brought in for questioning has a mean looking image but is quickly cleared. You can bet your bottom dollar that in the time between he was arrested and cleared the media will have had slogans on their front page such as 'BEAST', 'SICKO' and 'VILE RAPIST'(with probably a story full of bs sold by a neighbour aswell). A life ruined.

Quick question. I read Nolan's article in Newsweek and i must say it's one of the most beautiful things i've ever read....really emotional. I was curious, did Nolan mean that Heath skated around on the set while they weren't filming? Did he skate in real life? That's what i got from what he said. I wasn't aware Joker was gonna' ride a skateboard in the film?? Seems to me Nolan was saying Heath skated "On to" the set....then other younger crew members started joining in?? Maybe i misunderstood the comment. Anyhow...thanks guys!

Bill

The world needs more people like this. Just like us, he didn't know Heath personally, but he can appreciate and admire the man just the same.

Nolan is a very articulate, both in interviews and behind a quill. Odd that he let so much of Goyer's shoddy dialogue into his movie.

Just look at how the media behaved during the Duke Lacrosse case. Those kids were referred to as "rapists," "rich white boys," and a number of disgusting things. Well, just lookie how that one turned out...

i admit the media is bad in the u.s but its nothing compared to the u.k. those words you used (vile rapist etc...) would never appear in our headlines because our slander laws are much tougher.

where a u.k. rag might say "vile sicko" ours would say "suspected killer". that is why, for example, that new tom cruise "biography" will likely not be published here because the author would be open to lawsuits from cruise. the u.k. is a bit more obviously sensationalistic and the rules regarding slander are even more lenient than ours (in the u.s.a.).
