I myself am in a similar position.
I've been thinking of getting a 360 or PS3 for sometime. I had a PS2 last gen, so I was thinking of picking up a 360 for this gen as a change of pace.
Only thing is:
1. While I know its no longer as big an issue as it was, the RROD ordeal scares me. The last thing I want is to pay $350 for the system and have to deal with all the unnecessary customer service garbage afterwards.
2. Online. This will be my first foray into the online gaming world and I feel Xbox Live is best for that. However, I'll only be playing online for 4 months. Is there another option other than the 12-month plan I can subscribe to? Also, I'd have to buy a wireless adapter correct? That may balloon the price beyond a PS3. Is the PS Network that bad? I mean, I don't really care for leaderboards or achievements or anything, I just want to join my friends online. Is that okay with PSN, or are there other probelms with it? Any info would be appreciated.
3. With most games going multiplatform, most of the 360 exclusives don't appeal to me: GoW, Halo, Mass Effect, etc. I'm not saying they're not great games, just not my personal taste. However, Ninja Gaiden II is something I've looked forward to for a while.
4. I love platformers. Jak, Ratchet, and Sly were among my favourite games last gen. Banjo 3 looks great, is there anything else like it coming for the 360 anytime soon? B/c LittleBigPlanet looks phenomenal.
5. I see Blu-Ray as nothing but a positive. While it may not directly affect gameplay, the fact that I'll be able to watch The Dark Knight in HD makes me drool.
6. All of a sudden, the PS3 actually seems to be worth its value. Blu-Ray, Next-gen gaming capabilities, wi-fi, free online ($80 a year is still $80 a year) for just $50 more seems like a hell of a deal.
So as you can see, the PS3 seems like a safer bet for me personally despite my curiosity towards the 360.
However, some of my statements may be incorrect. Please correct me if I'm wrong.
