Help me decide which system to get.

hey friends, my xbox 3600 recently got stolen (bummer), so i'm out a system and about to buy a new one.

there are only two options right now, imo, another xbox 360 (which i loved), or a ps3 (which has blu ray, MGS4).

opinions, comments would help. thanks kiddies.

Don't you still have a bunch of 360 games? Or did the games get stolen too?

I agree, but, at the same time, MS can´t rely on on digital distribution alone, that would alienate all gamers that prefer to own the physical copy of a game.
Blu-Ray is the future, it´s the sucessor of the DVD format, so, they have to jump there sooner than later.

I really don't see Blu-Ray catching on with the general pubic, I think digital distribution is where the future is headed, not BR. I really think Blu-Ray is the next LaserDisc, not DVD.

Blu-Ray HAS to catch on, its the only form of hard-disk HD media. I dont think digitil distribution will be catching on with the public ANY time soon.

yeah, everything was stolen; games, controllers...

I'm with you. At the end of the day, I don't think the general public will care enough to switch from DVD to BR. The jump in quality is not great enough to warrant paying the extra money (Especially in a time when the economy is shot to hell). This isn't like the difference between VHS and DVD. This is a slight improvement, not a revolution like DVD.

Once the price for High Def media altogether comes down a bit in price, the public will start to make that switch much more feverishly.

PS3 also plays Blu-Ray, and has free online play. Those are the two biggest reasons I picked it.

Why does it have to catch on? Most people I know have absolutely no interest in making the jump to Blu-Ray, it just not big enough. Digital is all about convience, which is what people want, most people are converting to that without even knowing it, by using On Demand.

Ugh, the old free online play argument, X-Box costs less than $4/month for online, it costs more for World of Warcraft.

Yes but free is still better then 4 bucks.

PS3, if you have the money.

1. Free online
2. Blu-Ray player
3. a lot of amazing games coming out
4. more potential for better games with the Cell processor and the bigger disc space
5. and most importantly WAY MORE RELIABLE!

PS3, if you have the money.

1. Free online
I give you that one, but that´s an old Sony argument that gets no one no where. Like amazingfantasy15 said what you pay is not all that, and the service is way better than the PSN.

2. Blu-Ray player
That´s true.
The 360 has yet to announce if it´s to have one or not, and for all i know, the PS3 one is damn good.
The question, does it matter? Are you ready to make the jump from DVD to BR?

3. a lot of amazing games coming out
All consoles have a lot of amazing games coming out...
The PS3 has no better than the 360

4. more potential for better games with the Cell processor and the bigger disc space
That´s pure BS.
The Cell is great (for all i know) and, of course, it has bigger disc space, but that doesn´t mean nothing if you get tons of "Lair"s

5. and most importantly WAY MORE RELIABLE!
That i believe.
The 360 has the infamous RRoD, and that´s almost a given that you´ll have it sooner or later (my 360 only had it once, back in Feb 08, and the console is from back Nov 06).
But there is a new chipset coming out, so......
And it´s not all that like many like to point out...

PS3, if you have the money.

1. Free online

Less than $4/month for X-Box Live, it's more expensive for a gallon of gas.
2. Blu-Ray player

Yeah, great a Blu-Ray player, but is Blu-Ray really worth it, to me not really.
3. a lot of amazing games coming out

Guess the X-Box isn't releasing any more games than, huh?
4. more potential for better games with the Cell processor and the bigger disc space

Yeah that cell processor and bigger disc space haven't exactly produced amazingly better games yet, just makes it harder to produce games. GTA4 and Obilvion also show the disc size isn't a huge factor, both are very large games, yet can still fit on a DVD. Bring this argument up when there's a game that actually uses both points.
5. and most importantly WAY MORE RELIABLE!

Yeah, okay, the X-Box has the RRoD, I got it and had my X-Box back within two weeks. It's another useless argument like the free online, if it was this huge factor like Microsoft didn't replace your X-Box I could see it being valid, but Microsoft will replace your X-Box, totally free of charge. Plus of the 5-6 people I know who have an X-Box, I'm the only one that got the RRoD.

i gotta say i'm leaning towards trying something new in getting a ps3. mgs4 is the top exclusive game i want of all the systems.

also, the mgs4 bundle pack looks intriguing with the 80 gb version.

however, i still won't be buying anything until after e3.

if you're into platformers and creativity, LittleBigPlanet is something that you probably won't want to miss.

of course, it's still half a year away :(

I have a Wii but I've been thinking about getting a 360 or PS3, but probably not this year. I like Wii alot but I'm also frustrated by its limitations, like weaker graphics, no HD (if you can call 512 MB a HD...), convoluted online play (I really hate FC), and no DLC. Have to get my wife to agree before I'd shell out money for it, but if I wanted it enough I just might sell my Wii console plus all the accessories and games to buy one. I probably won't do that though, because it's still popular among my family and in-laws and I think it's a good introduction for my baby to play later on.

Btw, I'm leaning toward 360, but PS3 also functions as a blu-ray player and we can use it to watch movies when we aren't playing it.

I myself am in a similar position.

I've been thinking of getting a 360 or PS3 for sometime. I had a PS2 last gen, so I was thinking of picking up a 360 for this gen as a change of pace.

Only thing is:

1. While I know its no longer as big an issue as it was, the RROD ordeal scares me. The last thing I want is to pay $350 for the system and have to deal with all the unnecessary customer service garbage afterwards.

2. Online. This will be my first foray into the online gaming world and I feel Xbox Live is best for that. However, I'll only be playing online for 4 months. Is there another option other than the 12-month plan I can subscribe to? Also, I'd have to buy a wireless adapter correct? That may balloon the price beyond a PS3. Is the PS Network that bad? I mean, I don't really care for leaderboards or achievements or anything, I just want to join my friends online. Is that okay with PSN, or are there other probelms with it? Any info would be appreciated.

3. With most games going multiplatform, most of the 360 exclusives don't appeal to me: GoW, Halo, Mass Effect, etc. I'm not saying they're not great games, just not my personal taste. However, Ninja Gaiden II is something I've looked forward to for a while.

4. I love platformers. Jak, Ratchet, and Sly were among my favourite games last gen. Banjo 3 looks great, is there anything else like it coming for the 360 anytime soon? B/c LittleBigPlanet looks phenomenal.

5. I see Blu-Ray as nothing but a positive. While it may not directly affect gameplay, the fact that I'll be able to watch The Dark Knight in HD makes me drool.

6. All of a sudden, the PS3 actually seems to be worth its value. Blu-Ray, Next-gen gaming capabilities, wi-fi, free online ($80 a year is still $80 a year) for just $50 more seems like a hell of a deal.

So as you can see, the PS3 seems like a safer bet for me personally despite my curiosity towards the 360.

However, some of my statements may be incorrect. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

I have a 360, which i love, and a high-end PC which i also love.
In September, if everything goes right (and it never does....), i´m getting a PS3.
And i can say that i only do it for the games, because i don´t particulary like Sony with all delays to Europe and all that (i find laughable that Afrika is not coming to Europe, don´t even know what the game is, but it´s hilarious to see the way Sony rapes Europe and "we" still love the Playstation).
I don´t really care for MGS4 to the point of buying a PS3 just for that (but i will get it), and of the upcoming games, the only one that really gets my attention is Little Big Planet.

All in all, like i said before and i´m glad you also agree, wait for the E3 (that´s why i´m going to get the PS3 in September)

my experience with their customer service wasn't bad. i was on the phone no longer than 10 minutes and they sent me a shipping box so i could get my 360 replaced free of charge. i recieved my new 360 almost a month later. however, for a $300 plus system (especially next gen), having to go through such trouble in the first place is a big negative in my book. Microsoft is known for putting out their products prematurely before fine tuning everything and getting rid of the bugs. the 360 is no exception. so while most 360's don't break down, if you're going to buy one, get one with the assumption that you'll have to eventually call Microsoft for a replacement....that way if it happens, you're already prepared and if it doesn't happen then it's all good.

i have had limited experience with PSN because i don't have a router. i hook my cable modem directly into my PS3 and i've only ever had the occasional hiccup while playing online. i haven't played GTA4 online lately, but i got a chance to play it on PSN when it first came out and i didn't have any problems the 15 or so hours i spent playing GTA4 on PSN. my friend brings over Team Fortress 2 sometimes and we get down online with the occasional lag. i've played Motorstorm on PSN and it didn't give me any problems. so i would definitely say that i get more than my money's worth when i game it up online for free. if i were a constant online gamer, then i'd probably prefer Xbox Live, but as an occasional online gamer...PSN more than suffices.

I haven't had any problems on the PSN and from what I've observed you get a more mature crowd than on XBox Live (just my observation people, don't have a friggen cow).

With the RRoD thing, it's not bad at all, customer support is very good, besides that's not even supposed to be a problem anymore right.

For online, you can buy a 3-month subscription for $20 (btw, 13 month sub is $50, not $80) and you get a month free right off the bat, some games also come with free trials too, I got an extra month with GTA. You don't have to pay for a wireless adaptor, I plug the wire directly into my X-Box and have no problems.

Spider-Jay, based on what you said in your post, Id suggest you get a PS3 bc it seems more in line with what you want out of a console

Oh nice! That 3-month plan would work well for me!

Yeah it seems that way. Which is disappointing, lol.

I had an N64, then moved on to the PS2, and was hoping to make the leap to Microsoft with the 360 so I could have had a taste of all 3 makers.

But it seems I'll personally be more happy with the PS3 and will probably get more out of it. Either way, I won't be making any purchases at least until June 12th.

The truth most of us are biased whether we admit it or not OP, so I can easily admit that I have trouble not bragging up my system of choice just because I enjoy it so much, and don't own the other so I don't hype it up as much as I should. In the end it just boils down to your own personal taste. If you still had your games I'd recommend sticking with the 360, but since those were stolen as well that arguments a non factor.

However it can easily be said that both systems give you more than enough bang for your buck. Both have good games about to be released, and both have a good current library of games. Both let you do far more with your console than any other consoles before them. Both have awesome looking games. Soon with the PS3 releasing in game XMB both will have the ability to play custom sound tracks in game and text message friends. Neither is a bad purchase either way.

Edit - If you do get a PS3 however, go with the 80GB. $100 more and is just so much better than the 40GB IMO.

Now with the above disclaimer said I'll give my biased answer. Personally I chose the PS3, and couldn't be happier. Blu-ray is a side factor, it's a + but not the reason I bought it. It has a lot of features I like, it's ability to do a lot of stuff with my PSP is a solid +, free online, Blue Tooth, usb, HDMI, memory stick slots, and it's very reliable to boot as I've never had a heat related issue.

Now on to the main thing, games. I've heard a LOT of times that "The PS3 has NO games", this is false. The 360 does have a larger library however, no doubt. However I have MORE than enough to keep me busy inbetween the games I really want. Take these last few months, one month I buy COD4, the next GTA4, next month MGS4 comes out, month after SF4. Games like Tekken 6, FF XIII, Little Big Planet, Haze, and several others are very close to release. Plus there's Home which will offer tons of connectivity and cool **** to do with your friends list.

I honestly do not regret in any way shape or form buying my PS3.

lol...not that bad? i've read so many people being on their 3rd 360 console, it's not even funny. and it took one of my friends 2 months to get his back because their are so many repairs going on their are are getting back-logged.
