I'll take this rumor with a pinch of salt.

From whats been quoted/mentioned in the article, yes, he could be talking about Tom Welling & yes, if you combine it with the cagey answer or non-answer he gave at the Smallville panel at Comic Con today in reference to the Superman movie role, you could well have a good arguement.. but then again this "source" (if indeed a legitimate one) could very well & probably 99% NOT talking about Tom Welling & indeed the answer/non-answer he gave at the panel means absolutely nothing.

There are several "popular TV actors" that could fit the Superman bill & would 'please fans', not just Tom Welling. Head over to the casting thread & you can see them all.

In all likelihood, this all means nothing. But I've said it before & I will say it again, at this stage I won't be ruling anyone out on the word of some internet blogger or a proclaimed insider source.

The fact that Ryan Reynolds was cast to play Green Lantern by WB, who has already played Deadpool in X-Men Origins: Wolverine & will almost certainly play the character again in Deadpool's own feature film if it gets some legs. As well as Chris Evans being cast as Captain America after previously playing the Human Torch in the 2 fairly successful Fantastic Four films.. well it all makes you wonder that if these 2 actors can play 4 different characters between them, 1 of said actors actually playing 2 from the same universe, then why would Tom Welling's previous association with a TV show containing the character in another universe/version hinder him even being looked at for a movie which is to be completely seperate?
Reynolds & Evans also played said characters in feature films that have been seen by alot more people that will have seen Welling on Smallville..

Time will tell, I'll cross my fingers that its true, but I'm not getting my hopes up. Something tells me that even if this was true & WB/Nolan/whoever did want Tom Welling, would he really want to continue to play the character beyond the 10 years he will have been doing Smallville..? seems doubtful, would probably depend on the color of WB's money but still.

Without getting into this whole debate, Heroes was cancelled because it was leaking viewers like a sieve. Whereas Smallville's ratings generally went up & down from year to year. Infact the only year there was a substantial drop in ratings & a successive decline in viewers 2 years running, was the year it went from Thursday to Friday.. which was only last season.

Good points. Bear in mind though, Welling is now also an exec producer on SV and seems to have an invested interest in the show/character beyond his acting duties. And above that, WB likely hold him in a good regard given he has portrayed the character faithfully for 10 yrs

who knows how casting will ultimately play out this time around for nolan's superman. It can go so many different ways, could go from total unknowns, to some semi knowns, to someone like a ryan reynolds. I for one hope they dont screw up casting for clark this time for the film. I do agree with jonah's name being throw around and around again its more likely it will be him. Unless it turns out like the whole berlanti thing on flash and he helped scripted it and was scheduled to direct and then poof he is out and campbell came in. Something like that could happen. But we are probably still like 1-3 months away from official word on director. Then i do hope casting is going on right now or soon to be starting with hopefully at least superman/clark cast before then of the yr. Cause we know film has to be filming within 2011 due to the legal stuff. and if they do want to hit that winter 2012 release a june/july 2011 start date needs to be it for start of filming.

Also the whole thing with the tv actors being looked at rumor if any of you ventured over to the untitled superman movie section and into the nolan or casting threads its pretty much been stated that the moviehole guy was talking about mad men star jon hamm as the person who was rumored to been looked at. Now as to if its true or even if he would take the role if he was offered is another thing.

looks like more than that, unless they had JP standing on a box or something

I found this video on youtube of Jensen, Jared and Tom together on stage and they look almost the same height, maybe an inch difference.

I'm not trying to cause a storm or anything, but can we get this thread (or preferably an "Official Tom Welling" thread) in the Superman forum going? There's plenty of reasons to have a fair Welling thread in the Superman forum, especially now that he's publicly said he's open to do a Supes movie.

If that's not good enough, then I feel the support us fans have given him for the PAST SEVEN YEARS (at least) is a good enough reason. We don't have any sort of confirmation of who it could be so, no matter what any "insider," MOD, or souce says, Welling is still an option in my book.

There's always been plenty of reasons, but I don't think it matters whether it's here or there or somewhere else, there's always been plenty of discussion on the subject and there'll continue to be, everywhere.

I'm guessing Welling is more open to the idea now that Smallville is finishing. Before, it meant the show finishing up early.

Yeah.

Jon Hamm was the 'TV actor' they were looking at.

We've known that for a while now.

The good news is... very very very little chance he'll make the casting finals. They're just "looking" at him at this stage.

Similar to how they were considering Ryan Gosling early on for Green Lantern before Campbell was attached.

i wouldnt mind having tom as new film superman. but i know its not to likely of a thing to happen. And to me personally its fair better to go with an all new cast, and all new setting/feel and all that. So this new film can be on its own two feet and not be shackled down with donner elements, singer's stuff, or even sv's take on things. This film should be a full clean slate.

I love Tom with all my heart and seeing him in a Superman film would be the best thing ever. I know better though and I highly doubt that Nolan would even consider Tom for the reboot. So I'm just hoping that we get to at least see him in the suit on the show. I'll be very disappointed if we don't get that.

As for the guys in the running...Hamm should not even be there. Maybe for Jor-El, but Superman...no. That other guy from White Collar has the face, but he's way to little. And Jared Padalecki, love him too and never thought I'd see him in the same sentence as Superman. He definitely has the body build right, but I agree with others about his face not being good for Superman. I mean don't get me wrong, I think he's beautiful, I just don't see Clark Kent when I look at him.

Nolan is probably going to cast some guy nobody is even thinking about. I wish he would give Tom a chance though. It's going to be hard seeing another guy play a character I've watched Tom play for 10 years. I also think many people don't give Tom enough credit. He's gotten so good now, much much better than he was in the early Smallville days. I think directing helped him grow as an actor. He would do amazing in a film. I don't count Routh cuz like many others, I erased SR from my memory a long time ago.

I feel the same way. I've pretty much been watching the show since it started. I've always hoped he'd be playing Superman in the live action film. It will be hard to watch someone else playing Clark Kent/Superman if they do get someone else, which they probably will. :csad:

Hate to bring up this fact again as I'm sure it's been done quite often, but Tom has not yet played Superman. He's been a different version of CK, but that's it.
I am hoping he pulls through whenever he does put the suit on this season and I'm completely willing to see him get a fair screentest, but he's not Superman yet.

Yeah .......... technically speaking, although he's essentially played the role for 10 years, we may only actually see Tom Welling in an official capacity as Superman for a few scenes in the series finale, for all we know.

Tom Welling has given me an emotional attachment to his character. Sometimes he evokes so much emotion in his scenes you can really tell his a very talented actor.

Brandon Routh felt very bland with little substance. He could of died in the movie and I would of felt the same lol.

To say that 'Tom isn't really playing Superman' is really splitting hairs.

Clark Kent *IS* Superman.

No, he's not wearing the tights, but weren't you guys watching this past season?

He's >< close to being Superman. He just needs to shed his hang-ups about flying and pull on the red and blue tights and he's the Big Blue Boyscout.

Quoted for truth.

Showtime knows everything that is going on with production of the new film and he says Welling is not a possibility.

The film doesn't even have a completed script, how can anyone who *isn't* Christopher Nolan or maybe someone high up in at WB know what is or isn't possible?
