so how important of a role does that English Monk guy play??

is he an important historical figure?

I watched the scene again. It is not clear that Bjorn kept the coin or not.
Anyway I don't think the point was to show that it worths a fortune because that has no significance to the story, it is not important.
The point was to show that either Ragnar or his son payed the law giver to spare Rollo. I think the former did it.

Gotta disagree with you on that one good sir. Unless it was Bjorn (which neither of us think it was) then I think the overall point of that short scene was to establish the coins worth for the audience. Had we not had the scene with Bjorn, a single coin in the judge's hand would have held no significance.

All that said, the scene could have also served both points -to establish the coins worth and infer Bjorn may have been the one making bribes.

I meant that is not significant to just show that the coin worths a fortune, the main point ( for me ) was to "introduce" the coin and then show it in the hand of the law giver thus linking the bribing to Ragnar/Bjorn. The value of the coin itself is secondary.

I partially disagree. We shall settle this by way of sword fight. I warn you, I do not know how to sword fight.

Swords ? No. A gentlemen duel with pistols yes.

Edit : and I 'm warning you too, I'm a lousy shooter.

Guys....guys....let's be civil now. No need for violence....

Here's a question I have.... I remember a bit of the history for Rollo, but does anyone think he's going to stay loyal?

Also, I like the role of the English priest. I was sad to see it diminished in this episode. tbh....though I love they gave me closure, I felt like this episode should have been with season one.

yeah. it kind of felt this ep should have been the finale of Season 1.

then when Season 2 starts, they do the time skip with an older Bjorn.

it's been so long since Season 1 finished, that I had a hard time remembering why the brothers were fighting each other at the beginning of this ep......lol.

We are joking Huntress.
I don't know what to think of Rollo right now. I think he expected to die and will go through some sort of penitence.

Indeed, Xavier and I are merely jesting.

I also forgot the exact reasoning behind Rollo and Ragnar being at each other, so I put it down to Rollo being a snake and a jerk face.

One of the oldest reason between brothers, jealousy.
Ragnar rakes up all the glory and fame and he is now Yarl,
That and the Yarl ex wife whispering at Rollo's ears, she is the snake.
Rollo is not a bad guy he just thinks he deserves a piece of Ragnar destiny.

I'm pretty curious why the former Jarl's wife is still trying to get in good with Rollo. He's lost any semblance of power or potential power he once had, what does she get out of it now? Perhaps it's a way to stay close to Ragnar and the benefits of being close to a powerful family...beyond that, I don't see her game plan.

Good question.
My theory is that she knows Ragnar cares for Rollo ( even after the betrayal ) so he must stay alive if she wants to get back at Ragnar. He is her tool.

"Perhaps it's a way to stay close to Ragnar and the benefits of being close to a powerful family"
^^ Or that.

Btw, her name is Siggy. I had to check IMDB to find her name :)

I actually think she is playing the long game. Her former husband was replaced and she's now a servant in what used to be her household. I think she sees a man who could be Jarl and if anyone was going to replace Ragnar it would be Rollo. So she's backed the dark horse... :cwink:

^^
I would agree if Rollo wasn't burned. After his betrayal no one will follow or backup him as Jarl and that is w/o taking into account his lack of charisma and vision, the guy is no leader ( not everyone is ).

Btw, I learned on IMDB that Vikings' Rollo is inspired from a real historical figure. A Rollo invaded Normandie ( France ) and was the ancestor of Guillaume le Conquérant !

"Rollo was based on a real viking called Rollo who went on to conquer parts of France. Today those parts are known as Normandi: "Land of the Norsemen". Rollo was the ancestor of Willem the Conqurer."

Yeah, I read that too. That's why I think the wife see something in Rollo. He doesn't have the same vision as Ragnar, but he's just as powerful...but in a different way.

He has physical strength and that's all and since he lost his honor no one will follow him.
Rollo has been marked with a stamp of shame, he said it himself, he is nothing now.

He was baptized in the first season and that may turn out to be important later on. He may not be shunned by all, and I'm sure there will be plenty who will see the advantage of his strong sword arm.

That was just a gesture, a display, he didn't believed it and his fellow vikings saw that as a treason toward their Gods, they laughed at it.
Rollo is no Christian.

Yet, his meaningless gesture could become very important since it wasn't meaningless to everyone. Again, Rollo may be down, but I certainly don't think he's down for the count.

We shall see, maybe he will cut his peace of glory in France Normandie like the real Rollo but IMO he is burned in Vikings land.
