How I Met Your Father - CBS Eyeing HIMYM Spinoff

I thought Krysta seems to fit the description better than Tiya. Then again I'm not a casting director, so...

I wonder why they are reusing that gimmick considering it had absolutely no payoff on HIMYM. They just kinda did away with Saget for the finale.

Ehh... I thought it was kind of weird the way they just brushed him aside, but what's there to pay off? It's a voiceover.

The way I probably would've handled it is to have Saget (offscreen) exchange the dialogue with the kids, cut to Radnor letting what the kids have said sink in once they've finished talking and then go forward as they did.

I was wondering if they were going to explain why Ted sounded like Bob Saget up until the last two episodes instead of Josh Radner but they just completely dropped it.

The main reason I can think of is so you have a different voice narrating to offset the actor playing the character providing some variation from hearing them speak "in the past" while telling the story "in the present."

They just cannot shake this show off.

I dunno what the payoff should've been, probably what you described, letting Saget finish the story. I mean, future Ted was the storyteller with whom the audience had been hearing the narrative from for the past nine years. He probably should've finished it. Hell, they could've even made a joke about it (make him cough, then have Randor's voice and say that it has felt like something has been in his throat for years). Just something. To completely disregard Saget was an odd choice.

I agree that they should have at least acknowledged Saget as the narrator instead of completely ignoring it. I assumed they couldn't think of a good enough reason to still have him in the finale so they dropped it. I wonder why they are going ahead with the same thing for the new show. I actually would have loved the coughing gag between Saget and Radnor if they had done that.

I'm glad to hear it. I know people are skeptical after the HIMYM finale, but the fact is, Carter and Bays provided us with 9 solid years of comedy that was better than just about anything else on TV and some very likeable and endearing characters. I will definitely give this a shot.

True. And when the end of this series comes about, we all know to expect that the father will die and the first guy the mother met at the beginning is the guy she's going to start dating again six years later and be the one true love. :o

Can this really be called a spin off ? When as far as I can tell it has absolutely no ties to the original show ? I guess they are desperate to try & bring in the HIMYM fan base

It will have some ties to the Mother but mostly in the non-story aspect. It shares the same format, the same set up (finding the true love and/or parent) and possibly will share a few locations as well. I've read back and forth how McLaren's will or will not be seen in the series although if it is it will not be the main hang out.

As far as the rest goes, it seems like they want to relocate the HIMYM fan base to this series. Let us all hope they have a better plan for ending it this time around.

Yeah, I can understand people not liking the way HIMYM ended or that it was sort of dragged on so long, but really, neither of those thing are relevant to this show at this stage of the game or in the foreseeable future (should this be successful). They're not going to need to tie up loose ends of story within the first few years of the show. They just need to focus on the comedy. And with a clean slate of continuity and new cast of characters, I hope it can really be as fresh as the early days of HIMYM were.

Series Order

EDIT: Scratch that, apparently a decision hasn't been made yet.

And it failed to make the order.

what’s remarkable about the list is the pilots that did not make it — most notably the planted CSI spinoff starring Patricia Arquette and the How I Met Your Mother spinoff How I Met Your Dad. I hear talks on the CSI spinoff, which would be a big moneymaker for CBS’ sibling CBS Studios, are ongoing and are expected to result in a pickup. Things are more complicated with 20th Century Fox TV-produced How I Met Your Dad. Just as those false pickup rumors began circulating yesterday, we started to to hear that CBS may not go forward with the high-profile project. It is unclear yet if that is genuine disinterest in the show or a negotiating tactic to get a piece of the show. CBS is known to drop bombs before, like last year’s pass on The Beverly Hills Cop pilot. And the network and HIMYD producer 20th TV had a rough negotiations for Friends with Better Lives last May. CBS owns or co-owns (with Sony TV) all newly picked up comedy series and all but one (Warner Bros. TV’s Stalker) drama.

For now. Considering the news slip-up yesterday and everything Deadline's been saying about the status of the pilot, this feels like there's some sort of negotiation going on behind closed doors.

That's true. It might be a negotiating tactic. If it works out.

CBS just announced that they picked up the CSI spinoff, so hopefully this won't be far behind.

I hope they give it a better name than Cyber, which still sounds silly to me.

It's a CBS procedural. I don't think they care about getting inventive.

In this case they should since as I pointed out in the Cancelled thread, it reminds me of cyber sex which is probably not the intent they were going for.

CBS picked up the original CSI at the very last minute and it helped changed the network.

HIMYD may not get picked up, remember how CBS passed at Beverly Hills Cop and NCIS:Red those two seemed like locks.

However I could see Fox maybe workout a deal for HIMYD since 20th Century is behind it. Even if it gets half the ratings of HIMYM it would survive on Fox.

Not just survive, half of HIMYM's numbers would be a sufficient improvement for FOX where comedy is concerned...
