How I Met Your Mother - Part 3

There's some pretty solid chemistry between the two. Not much room for doubt anymore, they nailed it with their pick for the mother.

Absolutely. I love her already and I was skeptical of giving the mother so much screen time.

I really like the mother too. I love the scene with her, and I like how free-spirited (and also how neurotic) she is.

It's good that Ted has hinted he went to LA. That means that an episode or two can take place entirely outside the confines of the wedding weekend. It can also show what other characters were up to at that time and can place the cast back in the familiar settings of the bar. I also hope though that it will show what the mother was up to as well, not only then, but at all the other times we've nearly encountered her.

Raven, what did you think of the mother in the episode?

I loved her, but then I was already in love with her before from having watched her interviews so I was probably a little biased. She was exactly as expected - sweet and adorable and the kind of girl I'd like to know.

I loved the end scene with her. As someone else mentioned, it was reminiscent of earlier seasons how it ended on an emotional and hopeful note while being juxtaposed with a scene (taking place simultaneously) of Ted looking like he was in despair and all alone at the table. It's scenes like those that are heart warming and bring hope.

I like Sarah Chalke as an actress, but I don't like Stella that much. I think the scenes between her and Ted though this season will be pretty good, with both completely (or I hope) moving on from what happened a few years ago.
Adore Sarah Chalke. Which is why my hatred of Stella surprises me. I just find the character insufferable.

I loved that last scene. I love that they're showing fast forward with him and the mother together. They hit a home run with casting the mother.

It's because Ted constantly bent over backwards for her to fall in love with him by going on a 30 second date with him, and even worse, tried to get him to move to New Jersey. Who in their sane mind would want to move to NJ?

Even after the wedding he was bending over backward to her with her current husband. And what does he get? He gets made into a joke in Tony's movie.

But everything was intentional because it hammered in the fact that Ted was rushing into marriage with a person who wasn't right for him, and Stella leaving him was a blessing in disguise.

But you can kind of understand why he would do that. I've gotten into that mindset more than once, and know others who have too, and have moved elsewhere where they didn't even enjoy it just to be with the person. It's easy to start rationalising things when you can't find true love. You then meet someone and even though you know in your heart that they're not that suitable or compatible, you tell yourself you're being too picky and that no-one is perfect. You also tell yourself that the course of true love never did run smoothly and so you settle.

But it's clear that Cristin Milioti's character is more suitable for Ted than Stella. He doesn't have to change who he is so much or what he wants out of life. He can be himself and know that she'll love him and accept him for that. They have more in common with each other and she would likely delight in the small things without him having to go out of his way to impress her or get her to accept him.

Apparently Cristin Milioti is learning to play bass guitar for this role. :awesome:

SheKnows meets How I Met Your Mother's Cristin Milioti

Last spring, after eight full years of waiting, we finally met Our Mother. During the final few moments of the How I Met Your Mother Season 8 finale, we saw The Mother, and HIMYM fans erupted in approval all over the internet. It may have been the first time in history that fans seemed genuinely happy about a casting decision.

Even The Mother, Cristin Milioti, seemed surprised by the acceptance.

"Every interaction I've had has been so lovely. People often ask to hug me," Milioti told SheKnows, though she admitted that so far, she can usually manage to fly under the radar. "The fans of the show are so dedicated and so supportive... Everyone's been so sweet."

It's no wonder they've accepted her, though. Milioti, who before HIMYM made a name for herself in the Broadway production of Once, is incredibly sweet and down-to-earth. Admittedly, Milioti hadn't watched How I Met Your Mother before getting the role. Upon being hired, though, the show's creators, Craig Thomas and Carter Bays, sent her a congratulatory note and all the episodes on DVD. These days, she's become quite a fan of the show, making her even more lovable.

"It's been really weird watching the show knowing I'm The Mother," she said. "I was continually taken aback by how emotional I would get by watching it. I cried during a bunch of episodes, [like] the one where Robin (Cobie Smulders) and Ted (Josh Radnor) are covered in tomato sauce and asking themselves where they're going to be in five years."

As a matter of fact, she loves the show so much that she's trying to bring a sense of authenticity to it by actually learning how to play bass. (A long-known tidbit about The Mother is that she can play bass.)

"I'm learning the bass. I'm attempting to teach myself again. In fact, one of the guys from Once who played the bass on our show, Will Connolly, is helping me. I'm playing one Radiohead bass line now," she said, quite excited about her newfound talent. "I look like I know what I'm doing, but I shouldn't jump up onstage with the Red Hot Chili Peppers anytime soon. I would embarrass myself."

Awesome!

Soooo... what about spoilers? Milioti kept things close to her chest, knowing just how big a deal it is for everyone to keep things top secret. As a matter of fact, she shared that during her time in last season's finale, at the train station, all the on-screen extras were actually crew members. The showrunners didn't want to take the chance of an outside extra leaking news before it was time. Heck, it's so top secret that Milioti doesn't even know her character's name yet. She shared her excitement about one episode in particular, though.

"I don't wanna give anything away, but we just shot some stuff that I think... is going to be really, really exciting and wonderful for fans of the show," said Milioti. "There's one with Josh that I've shot that I'm very, very excited about. I'm sorry to be so cryptic!"

Oh, I understand it. I was joking about the NJ part. I was just expressing reasons to why JP didn't like Stella that much and it's because he tried so hard to get her while she never really put in close to half as much effort in their relationship and it ended with Ted getting his heart broken.

I still think in the present time that Ted is talking to his kids about the mother, shes not alive. I hope I'm wrong though. I can't wait to see more scenes with them together.

I get the same feeling as well, but I hope that's not the case. It'd be an awful downer ending to find that out, especially for a comedy.

Yeah, I don't think they're going to end the series on that kind of note.

It'd be like if Barney's ending in the series is him at the doctor...

"Hey, Barney, you remember all those women you screwed around with back before you settled down with Robin?"
"Hahaha, you BET I do, Doc!"
"Well one of them gave you HIV."

Also, has Sarah Chalke been confirmed to return?

If she weren't alive, I think the tone of his narration and even when he began sitting them down for the talk in the very first episode would've been far different. It would've been far more rueful and bittersweet.

I'd like a big screen version of the series like Sex and the City where they could show how Ted married the mother. It could lead up to the wedding, like how in SATC it was Carrie's wedding.

Forget the Mother.. people should be talking about..

Good way to open the season. The ending one year later with the mother was very sweet.

really liked the mother's interaction with Lilly and the ending scene
they made the right decision casting Milioti

I found these first two episodes to be funnier than all of last season, haha.

Solid two eps out of the box, particularly as I didn't really enjoy last season. Looking forward to seeing Cristin's further integration with the leads.

Yeah, let's hope your radar is off on this one. Two moments in this series come to mind as absolute suckage; Marshall's dad dying and the revelation of Robin's imaginary kids. That would easily outdistance both.

They were sad moments, but they gave way for really good writing/acting moments.

True. I'm just not all that keen on being bummed out on a comedy. No problem on dramatic moments and some weightiness, but I went to instant WTF on those two.

Yeah. It's definitely not the way to go with the series finale.
