Last spring, after eight full years of waiting, we finally met Our Mother. During the final few moments of the How I Met Your Mother Season 8 finale, we saw The Mother, and HIMYM fans erupted in approval all over the internet. It may have been the first time in history that fans seemed genuinely happy about a casting decision.
Even The Mother, Cristin Milioti, seemed surprised by the acceptance.
"Every interaction I've had has been so lovely. People often ask to hug me," Milioti told SheKnows, though she admitted that so far, she can usually manage to fly under the radar. "The fans of the show are so dedicated and so supportive... Everyone's been so sweet."
It's no wonder they've accepted her, though. Milioti, who before HIMYM made a name for herself in the Broadway production of Once, is incredibly sweet and down-to-earth. Admittedly, Milioti hadn't watched How I Met Your Mother before getting the role. Upon being hired, though, the show's creators, Craig Thomas and Carter Bays, sent her a congratulatory note and all the episodes on DVD. These days, she's become quite a fan of the show, making her even more lovable.
"It's been really weird watching the show knowing I'm The Mother," she said. "I was continually taken aback by how emotional I would get by watching it. I cried during a bunch of episodes, [like] the one where Robin (Cobie Smulders) and Ted (Josh Radnor) are covered in tomato sauce and asking themselves where they're going to be in five years."
As a matter of fact, she loves the show so much that she's trying to bring a sense of authenticity to it by actually learning how to play bass. (A long-known tidbit about The Mother is that she can play bass.)
"I'm learning the bass. I'm attempting to teach myself again. In fact, one of the guys from Once who played the bass on our show, Will Connolly, is helping me. I'm playing one Radiohead bass line now," she said, quite excited about her newfound talent. "I look like I know what I'm doing, but I shouldn't jump up onstage with the Red Hot Chili Peppers anytime soon. I would embarrass myself."
Awesome!
Soooo... what about spoilers? Milioti kept things close to her chest, knowing just how big a deal it is for everyone to keep things top secret. As a matter of fact, she shared that during her time in last season's finale, at the train station, all the on-screen extras were actually crew members. The showrunners didn't want to take the chance of an outside extra leaking news before it was time. Heck, it's so top secret that Milioti doesn't even know her character's name yet. She shared her excitement about one episode in particular, though.
"I don't wanna give anything away, but we just shot some stuff that I think... is going to be really, really exciting and wonderful for fans of the show," said Milioti. "There's one with Josh that I've shot that I'm very, very excited about. I'm sorry to be so cryptic!"
