He hasn't really had any long lasting relationships in the last 8 years. His longest was probably with Robin, which lasted almost a year. Next to that, there was Zoey and Victoria for about 3 months each, and Stella, which was very rushed, for about 8 months.

But I always felt like Ted would get the mother pregnant after about a year and shortly after the birth of their daughter, they would get married.

I don't like that idea. It seems more then that Ted is just trying to do the honourable thing by marrying her so their daughter won't grow up without a father than marrying her for herself because he loves her. Not saying he doesn't but it can cast doubt upon that whether it was truly for the right reason.

Ted has waited so long and tried so hard that it would feel in some way as if he were robbed and it wouldn't be as romantic as if he simply proposed because he wanted to marry her without any other person (ie a baby) involved.

What time of year exactly is Barney and Robin's wedding set? If Ted says that it was two years later that he took the mother up to the lighthouse, but he also is supposed to have had a daughter in 2015 as well, does he really mean exactly 2 years? Or is he speaking roughly (ie 2 years from 2013 is 2015)?

If he proposed and got married early in 2015, then conceivably p) the mother could have the daughter at the end of 2015. Did Trilogy Time specify when the daughter was born exactly? That way the time line would match up.

But still doesn't explain why he didn't take her up to the lighthouse a year from the wedding, the first time round.

What was wrong with saying one year from now instead of two? Can they have forgotten so easily since episode 2 of this season which was only a few weeks ago? It's not like the reference was made years ago in an earlier season. Or is it all part of the plan? But it still doesn't quite work even if it is because of various plotholes.

Although the show is set in real time and maybe that episode was in April, did Ted mean that it was exactly the same time in 2015? And in The Lighthouse, was it exactly 24 months from the wedding? Sometimes when people say in 2 years, they can just be speaking informally and meaning it's 2015 compared to 2013. However, it could be 16 months or 18 months or whatever instead of exactly 24.

But I just find it inconceivable that he wouldn't have taken her up to the lighthouse a year from the wedding when that little bit in Season 9 episode 2 was set and that it seemed to be her first time in 2015. Farhampton really seems more like a small coastal resort town than somewhere so large that you wouldn't get time to do everything.

When and where did they say that? Maybe it is a subtle reference to a baby bump if they specifically used those words?

The Mother also appears to be a perfect fit for Ted, what with their dorky humor, shared love of driving gloves and admiration of belt inventor Florian Van Oderloo. While Bays says it's important to show why the two are each other's missing halves, he promises that it won't always be rainbows and googly eyes.

"Their life after they meet won't be perfect. How could it be?" he says. "Even 'happily ever after' has some bumps in the road, and we'll see them."

I'm loving this season. It's still not as good as the first 3 seasons, but it's definitely a step up from what it has been for a few years.

I love how the Mother was able to resist Barney and see right through him right away. I didn't really buy how perceptive she was so quickly, but I like that her moment with Barney ended on a note that leaves him more grateful and encouraged, as opposed to feeling rejected. So far, that's two members of the gang who have already proven to like her before any involvement with Ted.

I wonder what Ted's reaction will be when he finds out he could have met the Mother a year earlier.

I think it will be one of those serendipitous feelings where part of him would be glad they didn't meet because he wouldn't have been ready for her, especially considering that he was still debating his feelings for Robin. Not to mention she still had a boyfriend and it wouldn't seem right for her to leave him just for Ted.

Yup.

He finally decides to take it after he gives Barney his blessing to marry Robin.

That is yet another way that episode ties everything together: He initially doesn't take the job because he still thinks he has a chance with Robin. Then later on, when he knows that he doesn't, he does.

Such a delightful episode. The scenes between Barney and the Mother were beautiful indeed. And Bryan Cranston stealing the spotlight. Just made me wanna smile throughout lol!! Also Barney speaking Dolphin was gold!!

That scene with the mother was a pleasant surprise. It was nice to see her interacting with Barney. The rest of the episode felt like it could easily be from an earlier season (although it didn't really feel like a Season 8 episode when it was probably set).

It took me a while to remember what was going on at that time last year. I completely forgot that Barney and Robin didn't hook up until the end of the year.

According to a tweet by Carter Bays made half-an-hour before the airing of the episode, the flashback takes place between Splitsville and The Stamp Tramp.

I don't remember what happened in either of those two episodes. I'm guessing people broke up in Splitsville.

I suppose Barney will recognise the mother at the wedding when he sees her as the bass player? Maybe he'll introduce her to Robin and tell her how she was responsible for inspiring Barney to write "The Robin" and pursue her.
