How I Met Your Mother - Part 3

Lord, you lot are cynical. If the mother's not in it, you're all throwing a hissy fit. I loved this episode. It was light, it was fun. The three tales are the type of classic HIMYM storylines we'd have seen in earlier episodes, but didn't really necessitate their own episodes. I thought the punchline of Mosby at bat was great. My only complaint with the episode was that NPH played every member of the Player's Club. It would've been a great opportunity for some hilarious celebrity cameos.

Yeah, I'm enjoying the season so far.

The fandom seems split three ways over this season.

There are those who want a 24-esque serialized show where every little detail revolves around the mother and the fans cry afoul any time she doesn't show up.

Then there are those complaining that the wedding season has drastically changed the show at every level.

Finally, there is a third rational group who is just enjoying it for what it is.

Or people who just wanted 4 episodes having him meet the Mother right off the bat?

I just think the show has been on a steady decline since season 4. Season 2 was easily the best, but sometimes the show just drags and isn't funny. I enjoyed last night's episode, but let's face it, it didn't do anything to advance the plot enough for me to enjoy it more.

I understand taking their time and crafting everything for the final goal, but it needs to be sped up a little IMO.

Advance the plot? This is a sit-com. Technically the plot is how he met his wife which has gone on for 9 seasons now.

Loved this episode. Hope Lin Manuel-Miranda's character sticks around for a bit.

I don't mind the season being a wedding season. Since the beginning of the show not every episode was pushing the Mother plot forward.

I just think the quality of the episodes was higher in the beginning seasons and started to get uninteresting around Season 5 (to me, anyway).

Eps like the one revolving around the pineapple incident or the naked man were memorable and hilarious (and it seems like the first couple of seasons are packed with great episodes).

I liked this most recent episode, the rhyming didn't bother me as much as I thought it would, but last week's episode was HORRIBLE.

I've gotta say, when the episode was done, and I was listening to other stuff on TV, it took me some time to adjust to everything not rhyming. :(

But my feelings toward this season is that its not bad, but there are definitely episodes that feel like pure fillers. I'm not one who thinks the mother is needed for any episode to be considered noteworthy or good, but I feel like they are writing episodes around every other character, as opposed to the main character, and that bothers me. It seems more like they are trying to cram in as many call backs and guest stars from the past, which is nice to see especially when it comes to seeing Barney's mom and dad finally together. But too much of that can get distracting in the bigger picture because it seems like they want to tie up every single loose end first before moving forward.

We need more Episodes of the ducky tie quality.

I've been enjoying this season over all but I didn't like this episode. The rhyming just annoyed me and imo detracted from what could have been good stories.

Like I said, my problem is less wanting to do with the mother and more these episodes not being as fun or inventive as previous seasons. I just find the last few episodes to be pretty dull. I guess I'm just tired of the Farhampton inn and uninteresting flashbacks already.

 I'm neither of these...

I agree with you. I'm not expecting much and am watching these eps with an open mind, but they're kind of boring. I hope the show ends with at least a very good last 5 or so episodes and I'll be happy.

i enjoyed this week's episode, it felt like some of the older episodes
i'm fine with them taking a few episodes for flashbacks

I think the show sometimes doesn't feel funny because there's no audience there. Is just the crew listening to their own stuff without someone saying "hey, that isn't as funny as you think". After 8 seasons I can already identify the same laughing track over and over again. There's one in particular that always ends with the same laugh and is distracting as hell.
I know other sitcoms may use laugh tracks, but in this show is VERY noticeable.

It's very difficult to film before a live studio audience though, given the nature of the non-linear storytelling.

And I agree that this episode did seem like filler. Some of the rhyming was well done, but it definitely should've been used in an earlier season and not this late in the story.

And as some of us did predict before, some of the episodes do feel like it's just drawing the story out longer than it needs to be with this season all limited to this one weekend and before Ted and the mother actually meet.

Yep, that's what the creators have said. But I think that's also one of the weak spots of the show. It works extremely well sometimes (is one of the series' trademarks), but most of the times, and specially in later seasons, is just back and forth, back a forth with flashbacks that it feels like a live action Family Guy. It stops adding to the narrative and it becomes a gimmick.

I'll be glad to see that. But will it tell what happens after their meeting at Farhampton train station?

I hope she fills in the blanks on these near misses like when she went into the shower when Ted was dating her room mate or even how she might've wondered how her yellow umbrella returned (or when she lost it in the first place).

BTW I see that there's an upcoming HIMYM episode set in China, of all places.

I hope this quote from that article puts to rest the silly notion that the Mother is dead.

Assures Thomas: “Ted will be very happy at the end of the series.”

That does put an end to that theory.
