How I Met Your Mother - Part 5

Well with the way HIMYM ended and the bad taste it left in fans mouths I'm not to surprise that they wanted them to re-shoot somethings.

I disliked the finale but the articles mention difference of opinions in terms of reshoots and nothing about the HIMYM finale. This could just be a case of creative differences.

The fact that the creators refused to reshoot and refused to change their pre-determined HIMYM ending shows they are inflexible and hard headed... CBS probably felt they couldn't trust them....Plus I doubt HIMYD would have been popular as even if they only pissed off 20% of HIMYM fans, that is a huge drop in ratings...

Looks like the alternate ending leaked but was quickly taken down.

The video has since been taken down, but TVLine got a glimpse. So what’s different in this wrap-up? Ted’s VO on his wedding day is certainly more optimistic, even hinting at a bit of hope for Barney and Robin, and recaps pretty much his entire nine-year, “easy” run-up to meeting the future Mrs. Mosby. But it’s what’s not included that’s more important: Whereas the original ending found Tracy meeting an early demise and Ted eventually showing up at Robin’s apartment with the blue French horn, this one simply cuts off after Ted and Tracy’s train station meet-cute.

Think people would have really liked that better.

I always did like the fan-made alternate endings that ended right after the train scene.

After reading that, the voice of Austin Powers comes to mind :

"Now was that so hard?"

Seriously, was it? :o

I'm gonna be honest, How I Met Your Mother's ending is the first ending that turned me completely off a series. I just haven't been able to watch an episode since. There are surely some filer episodes I can probably watch, but any episode mentioning the mother just plain stings.

I have the first three seasons on DVD, one day was gonna pick up more, but I'm very iffy on watching it again....because...yeah, that ending was ass.

i saw the alternate ending and it's so much better than the original. the creators were idiots for going with their original ending.

I am a defender of the original ending, but damn, I gotta admit, I liked the alternate MUCH better.

I'm somewhat torn because I have a lot of respect for creators who stick to their guns amidst fan pressure, but at the same time, this alternate ending is a lot better. Although the upbeat song playing during the platform scene kind of took me out of the moment.

Wow. I'm just going to pretend that's the official ending. So much better.

I just watched the official alternate ending and it didn't leave me with the same feeling that the real ending left me with. I don't know how to describe it but I felt the real ending was something we haven't really seen on television before. This alternate ending was your run of the mill happy ending and it just didn't give off that same spark that the real ending gave me. I know I'm definitely in the minority on this one.

Yeah I prefer the alternate ending after watching it.

I'm not opposed to the idea of the original ending (well...not completely), but the biggest issue with it was that it was just far too much material to cram into one hour long episode. They had enough in the finale alone that it should have filled an entire season. You had events in there that deserved multiple episodes to flesh out (the Robin and Barney break up, Ted dealing with his wife's death, actually seeing Ted and Robin grow closer together again, ect). Had they done that...maybe people would have been better with it...maybe.

That alternate ending was beautiful. If you can just choose that ending on the DVD, I'll consider buying it.

I have to agree. I don't object to the material in the episode, but how they chose to execute it. I've been saying since it aired that that should have been the entire last season, in which case the ending would have been much more fitting. As it is, this alternate ending fits the last season's tone (and thus the show) much better.

Though I will say the use of 'Downtown Train' and 'Heaven' makes for better music than that little tune they used in the alternate.

Yeah. It was just plain old bad storytelling in how they approached the last episode, not necessarily bad ideas. Anyone is going to tell you that if you build up an entire season of television around one event, only to undo said event in 15 minutes, people aren't going to be happy.

And it just doesn't seem right when during the run of this show, we had multiple episodes to deal with Barney and Robin's first break up, but minutes to deal with their finale one. Or that we had multiple episodes devoted to Marshall dealing with the death of his Dad, but NOTHING with Ted dealing with the death of his wife.

The events that took place in this season needed time to develop. It was too rushed. There was really only two things I would have changed. One, I wouldn't have reverted Barney back to S1 Barney post break-up. Chucking tons of character development out the window wasn't my idea of a good evolution. Two, I wouldn't have had Ted show up with the horn at Robins. I would have liked to see those two have a conversation, something like Ted going, "Look...we're both very different people from who we were 20 years ago, but all I know is that I need you in my life." And I also needed to see some evolution of their older relationship. We needed to see Robin being there for Ted, hanging out with his family, see that she had changed and was the kind of person that now could make a place for Ted in her life.

Where is everyone watching this alternate ending when it says the video has been taken down? Clicking on the video just leads to some Cadbury's Dairy Milk site.
