Considering the X-Franchise's success, there no doubt will be an X4. The question is how long it takes for it to be made.

It was 19 years between Superman movies. I don't think there will be that long between X-Men films, but it all depends on a lot of factors, like how well the Wolverine movies does.

If the Wolvie movie is very successful, there could be a string of Wolvie movies, probably with some X-related supporting characters (Kitty Pryde & Wolverine the movie? Or maybe Jubilee? Even some character Wolvie wouldn't get along with like Gambit or Deadpool in a Wolvie movie would be fun).

The writers for the X-movies tend to base their material off of whatever the current trend in the X-books are. X3 was based heavily on Joss Whedon's Gifted arc and Morrison's run. So, what characters are in it and the storyline will largely depend on the flavor of the week with the X-books and perhaps some big name that replaces Whedon on Astonishing.

My thought is that there will be a complete or nearly complete reboot in about 5-10 years. Someone like Joss Whedon will be brought in to write and direct, most if not all the characters will be recast, and X4 will start a new trilogy of X-films.

Why will there be an X4 when Hugh Jackman hinted he's not doing one? Don't you know Fox doesn't believe in recasting or writing out their precious hero?

Planet of the Apes (2001) was a huge financial success on dvd sales, rentals and box office take and a sequel has still not been greenlit.

I think the chances of an X4 are slim b/c their only moving on with the spinoff films and after that Fox's x-men rights expire.

I doubt Jackman will be in X4. Someone like Joss Whedon would have no trouble recasting him.

Joss has also recently joked that if wrote another X-book, it would be without Wolverine. So I could also see him just not including Logan. Or having Logan de-age completely (not just mentally) into a 9 year old boy. I would pay so much money to see that.

Am X4 without Jean, Cyclops, Magneto and Mystique is not a movie I want to see. :o

I've tried to post a rather complex series thoughts...but keep getting clocked out before it all posts. To boil it down to simplest terms, I'm a big X-fan...and I'm in the business. There are a number of reasons why X4 will not be happening. I hate it. But things are what they are. If Hugh's movie is successful, they'll make direct-storyline sequels to it. If not, no one's going to want to touch the character again anytime soon.

Too much money involved in putting the pieces back together for a fourth with what X3 left. By the time everything plays out...the rights will revert to Marvel. They might finance another...depending on how they do over the next five to eight years movie-wise...but it would be totally different from what we've seen...cast and storywise (Fox keeps the rights to the intellectual property it has already produced).

Odds are very long on another X-film in the next decade...if ever.

ummmmmmmmm....wasn't there an article ( i wish i knew where it was) where that Donner lady said they are in talks about all that needs to be done is discussing the financial part of it as well as the negotiations with the original cast.

all we have to do is not watch Wolverine. :oldrazz: I think we have a bigger chance if it flops than if it succeds. If it flops, the studio will remember a certain trilogy that brought more than 1 billion for them, and then start to reflect on what went wrong. If it succeds, we'll have a bucn of Wolverine sequels.

It's really a no win situation. If the Wolverine spin-off is successful, then the studio will pursue a sequel in a direct storyline with the first...a slim shot that we'd see X-characters previously established in the X-franchise. If the spin-off fails, no one will want to pursue a storyline with that character for a looong time...and it's hard to sell an X-film without Jackman. The studio sees Hugh as the draw in the films...that's why everything from the comic story lines gets rewritten to center more on Wolverine in the movieverse.

And there were talks a while back about finding the financing...but the people I've spoken with about the franchise all say the same thing...they need a story with characters portrayed by names that will draw in order to get the financial allocation. X3 left so much of the X-movieverse in tatters that writing a story that picks up the ends and moves forward with the characters left in the same sort of 'reality grounded' world is proving difficult.

As written in X3, Jean Grey suffers from a split or alternate personality disorder that established itself as "The Phoenix." It was not some mysterious cosmic force that allowed Jean to conquer death. So Jean cannot be 'believably' resurrected. Same problem with Scott ("...But we never saw him die!!!" - I know...but let's face it...the movie pretty much left him dead and finding a good way to explain him running around with "no memory," "no ruby quartz lensed glasses" to control his power" is difficult - at best). You could spend half a movie just between explaining what happened to Charles and how he still looks like himself...but is able to walk now (see DVD commentaries for explanation there) and/or how Magneto regained his power/reorganized a new brotherhood. Want a new villian? Still a chunk of movie to extrapolate...

There in lies the rub...the guys left a few 'seeds' or openings for a sequel...but pulling them all together and tying them up into a tight knotted story and making the story good enough to get a few of the original cast members to commit (right now, a few wouldn't even look at it) so that financing becomes possible...is looking impossible.

I wouldn't say it won't ever happen...but then again, I wouldn't advise holding my breath on it.

I beliebe there will be an X4 and i hope more... but not soon. At least not before a 2010 release... Because of Wolverine and, i hope not, Magneto.

Do you know when that will be? I hear Fox's x-men rights will expire in 2010 but I don't know if that's really true. I hope it is though.

I haven't heard anything about that. I've seen users on the TLS forum saying Fox's x-men rights will expire in 4 years. Sounds more like they had a 10 year contract.

i always thought it was a twenty year deal.

They definitely need to make X-men 4 or do another trilogy like someone was talking about and have 4, 5, and 6.

It would be a real shame to stop making the movies, especially after the way X3 ended, they left it wide open for X4.

Fox will realize after they do Wolverine and Magneto, the spinoffs aren't going to make them any money, and hopefully they'll go back to X-men.

I want a separate movie that will do the Phoenix Saga justice! Thats all I want.

I think not. TLS had the plot running into a wall. (and if x-4 will be anything like it, they can keep it)

So did you like the various 'seeds' planted in X3? And did you like the 'finality' of many character arcs - having characters die or be cured? Was it the right thing to do to amp up the 'shock' factor and slam the story into a wall like this, leaving it very difficult to do an X4? Would a more open-ended, optimistic ending for all the characters have worked better?

Something like... Jean being cured, marrying Cyclops, both of them leaving the X-Men; Magneto appearing to die but being missing; Rogue refusing the cure and staying on to fight for Xavier's dream...?

Fox has made well over 500 million dollars (probably 600) if you add up the worldwide box office and dvd sales of X3.So the fact that they remain so silent and non-commited to making X4 is a little surprising. We're talking about a billion dollar franchise here. Thats what me uncertain that an X4 will be made.

What i'd do if i were them would be to hire a couple quality screenwriters to write a script for the 4th movie that could go into production after Wolverine is released.I'd also like them to get Tom DeSanto back on board as producer.

Sorry for me (who is a massive fan of the comics) and the main audience away from the comic book fans would not see an X4 without no Storm, no Wolverine, no Jean, no Cyclops. And seeing as two of them are already dead. Take Storm and Wolvie out and you got a flop with the general audience. :o
They specifically didn't show Cyclops death on camera in case they wanted to use his character again.IMO, he isn't dead(more than likely) And Phoenix can easily come back to life.

Yes, and Professor X is still alive, and Magneto gained his powers back.

Just saw this in IMDB boards (post is translated from french by a user, i copy paste it here):

"P. Stewart, aka Prof X, would have broken a secret by saying he would appear in the credits in a new adaptation of the comics ... which isn't Magneto, the announced spinoff on the genesis of the terrible mutant wearing a red armor. He doesn't hide either his enthusiasm at the idea of a fourth installment of X-men and doesn't hold any grudge to Brett Rattner of taking a sadistic pleasure of killing him in X3. The X-men franchise still holds surprises for Stewart. his comeback may not be in a wheelchair, symbol of the eminent Porfessor. Some nice talk who will surely make the mutantfans tense."

Yes, and no. I think that there will be a fourth X-men movie, but I think it will start going in a different direction. Something like "X-men: A New Beginning". They left X3 open for a sequel, but I am not so sure they will keep that story line
