FBI track Wolverine pirate
SUGGESTING it was an inside job, Hugh Jackman's production company yesterday said it was close to uncovering the source that leaked X-Men Origins: Wolverine onto the internet this week, effectively allowing hundreds of thousands of people to see the action blockbuster one month before its cinema release.
Exclusively speaking to reporter Alice Wasley in LA, the film's producer John Palermo said he was "very involved in the investigation'' - which also involves the FBI - and hot on the trail of the pirate, who leaked an almost-complete, high quality copy of the movie to file sharing websites on Tuesday.
"I can assure you we will hunt them and track them down and we are actually very close,'' Palermo, who formed Seed Productions with Jackman and wife Deborra-Lee Furness, said.
"It's certainly a felony and we will press charges to the fullest extent and probably rally for piracy charges in the future to be taken more seriously.''
Palermo said he "could only imagine'' that the leak came from someone on the inside.
On Thursday it was speculated that someone from inside Australian firm Rising Sun Productions may have been involved because the visual effects company's watermark appeared at the start of the online copy.
But they were quick to explain they had never been in possession of a completed copy of the film and this was ``impossible''.
Palermo, who will arrive in Sydney tomorrow and join Jackman on Wednesday in unveiling a 20-minute preview of Wolverine on Cockatoo Island, said he was "not worried at all'' about potential damage the leak could do to box office takings.
"I feel bad for those fans who have the unfortunate opportunity to view it at such an early stage,'' he said.
"It's kind of like seeing a Christmas tree without the lights and the ornaments and the star on the top.
"That being said, both Hugh and I are touched and overwhelmed by the amount of support from fans.''
