I Am Doom....discuss me [merged-2]

Didn't the Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe list Doom as having 3 goals. 1. absolute power 2. the rescue of his mother's soul from hell 3. the complete defeat and humiliation of Reed Richards (and the FF). They need to take these 3 goals and compare with the movie Doom, and see how short they fell in portraying the character. Doom would never allow a board of executives to have any control over him. Bad writing.

He didn't allow the board of executives to have control over him, he freaking killed them!

As for the three goals, I'm gonna throw out the mother's soul in hell thing, that just wouldn't fit into any comic movie, except for Spawn.

1) Absolute Power, it sure looked to me like he wanted power "this is the look of a man who embraces his destiny", "Who are we to deny being given powers that make us Gods?"

3) the complete defeat and humilation of Reed Richards (and the FF) sure looked to me as if he wanted to humilate Richards. Right from the start of the film, he enjoyed watching Reed grovel to get money for his project and to use his space station.

There were problems with Doom, but not because of the origin change or him having a couple lines similar to Norman Osbourne. The biggest problem is that he's barely in the film, and as soon as he dawns the mask the movie is nearly over.

I'm sorry, but the problem wasn't the lack of his screen time, the problem was the way they wrote the character. Dafoe provided an excellent performance, and Julian was horrible. Blame in on the writing or not, his Doom was horrible. His Doom was a sub-par Norman Osborne.

When I first saw McMahon in the shadows as Von Doom, I knew there was no way this character was going to be even portrayed even partially correctly.

How can they take one of the most iconic villians in the Marvel universe and reduce him to this?? Now, I love McMahon on Nip/Tuck, but his Doom was horrible. Part of this was the writing and to some degree the directing, but he did not do the character of Doom justice.

Okay, so they massacred the character of Dr. Doom, the most iconic villian in all of Marveldom...that's a given. So, let me throw this out there; how hard would it have been to just have Reed, Johnny, Sue, and Ben on the flight, get their powers, become celebrity heroes...and then have Victor be jealous he did not get any powers, have his huge corporate conglomerate of Von Doom Industries create a suit of armor so he would at least have been a formidible foe for the Four WITHOUT having been hit by the cosmic cloud? At least this way he wouldn't have been this Colossus/Electro amalgam.

Perhaps it would've been too "Bruce Wayne" gets toys from Lucius in BB...but my God....what a horrible rendition of one of the most amazing fictional villians.

And cripes, Lat-VEER-ia?? I know how it's spelled, but it's more like Lat-VARE-ia in my head, come to think of it, they pronounced it my way in Spiderman and his Amazing Friends too.

Anyway...please discuss :D

I thought Julian did great as Doom, but the Doom he was given wasn't very good to begin with. I also saw the similaries between Doom and Osborn, and it demonstrates the laziness of the writers, who tried desperately to separate Doom from his comic origin, and decided to copy Osborn from SP1 instead. The movie was fun and all (and slightly better than I expected), but Doom will always draw this movie down several notches, which is a damn shame because he could've been the best reason to see this movie. :doom:

The funny thing is that when Spidey 1 came out, people said GG's metallic armor made him too much like Doom.

...the similarities were just too many to be forgiven?

A huge scientific project that could make or break this company if it fails. It fails, and he's in big trouble.

Half the movies ever made have this plot device. Since half of who Doom was revolved around power and not losing it, this became an important plot point.

An obligatory getting fired and put off by the board sequence, and the dreadful stare as we know what the villian is going to do next.

He wasn't fired. From what I gathered, they were pulling their money out of his operations, because he used his money to fund the space exploration. Leaving him powerless. It wasn't a "You're out, Norman" situation, it was a "You're on your own now, Victor".

A killing of the head of the obligatory getting fired or put off scene where we saw the dreadful stare of the villian as we know what he's going to do next NOW actually doing it.

Did he get killed with a pumpkin bomb in broad daylight in front of hundreds of people and Mary Jane? Nope. He got a hole burned through him in a dark parking garage, in a much more personal and brutal sequence. You're saying movies can't have glares in them now if another movie did? Nevermind that Doom had a "angry thinking" shot and Dafoe had his "weird smile" in SPIDER-MAN.

The killing of a second-string character there just to introduce tension or drama.

Isn't that usually why second string characters usually get killed?

Dr. Stroom and Doctor in lab, both are grabbed by their necks and FLUNG into or through glass.

One of them is killed because their friend is simply insane, and is flung across an entire lab. One of them is killed because the villain is angry about his situation and wants to keep it under wraps. He is only flung a shorter distance, after having his neck broken.

Goblin is rejected by Spider-man after a proposal to work together. Thus, he fights back and attempts to destroy Spider-Man, believing all along that he is better than most of the people in the world. Doom is rejected by Sue STorm and the Fantastic Four. Thus, he fights back to destroy their interpersonal all along beliveing the he is better than most of humanity nad embracing his destiny, which Goblin alos talked about.

At no point does Dr. Doom even appeal to The Fantastic Four to join him. The Goblin didn't say a thing about embracing his destiny. He said that the others in New York existed to support the exceptional people.

Did they just drain the AUTOMATIC VILLIAN PLOT DISPENSER and had to reload?

You could say that about a lot of villains. Plot points cannot really NOT be cliche, since damn near everything has been done. But I can't remember the last time I saw this particular villain type in a film. The basics of The Goblin's plot were to further his business ends, and when Spider-Man got in the way and he figured out who he was, to destroy him before he could stop Goblin. The Fantastic Four never tried to stop Doom. Doom's plot was more or less revenge, brought on by the fact that he blamed them for his condition, blamed them for the loss of his empire, and everything else he held dear.

I always saw Doom the same way I saw Batman. A self made man of enormous resources from within. Not someone who needed cosmic rays or the training of Tibetan criminals to make him into his destiny.

You never replied after I ellaborated my disagreement.

This is mostly for Iron Maiden, but anybody else feel free to comment if you want. It's an art project I did involving enlarging an image using gridding. If it weren't for Iron Maiden, I wouldn't have been able to get my hands on a good version of Jim Lee's picture and therefore wouldn't have been able to do it.

The real version is 12'' x 16''. If you look closely, you may notice that I change Doom's nose into a triangle instead of Lee's rectangle. I feel the triangle nose better represents Doom's traditional look. ;)

I also have a few pictures from an issue of Spider-Man where he meets the superhero/villian tailor. I was gonna post them in the thread about Doom's cloak, but apparently that got closed for some reason. Anyway, here's Doom, along with a few other of his notable clients:

And it turns out his first superclient was none other than our good friend Mr. Benjamin Grimm.

Something just occured to me. Could one of the reasons that Doom does not have the high-tech armored suit in FANTASTIC FOUR possibly be the upcoming IRON MAN?

Probably not. Iron Man is still in the very early stages of pre-production. Is Cassevetes even still doing it?

Actually, that reason is a valid possibility. A Doom with kickass armor could steal the thunder from an Iron Man costume. It's almost certain there will be an Iron Man movie at some point, no matter what production troubles they're facing now.

So JM was given a bad script... I really didn't think ha was that bad of an actor ....... doom was.....changed to say the least.......at least he looked like Doom.

Thanks for posting those! I got a charge of that when I read it about a year ago. What issue was that in, by the way? Oh, and I know what you mean about these threads getting closed and merged. I have a hard time finding a previous discussion when that happens. :(

Edited to add.... I just now saw your art project and it looks awesome to behold! Boy, I wish they would have made a large-sized poster of Jim Lee's Doom.

That is the true essence of Doom; that he can stand amidsts Superpowered titans as an equal and yet a mere mortal simultaneously. That is one of many reasons why Doom was absent from this film. :down :down

Seems many people never saw Doom that way. Shame. Especially since some of them were working on the movie.

People, this Doom was STARTING OUT. He DID stand with some amazingly powerful beings. He got beat because he's the villain and they are the heroes.

"It's an origin. Everything's different about him, it's atrocious, but guys, it's an origin. It will get better. I swear! They waste a whole movie, but I repeat, it's an origin! So it's ok."

Sure makes this movie Doom version THAT much better when people scream "OriiIIIiiigin!".

I sure as heck won't buy the dvd. I didn't buy Punisher, and I sure won't buy FF on dvd. Unless they do release a director's cut, and it does indeed make the movie 10 times better.

But I doubt somes deleted scenes will improve much what we got...

Oh, and everyone's ****ting. It's human nature. We just do it on poor movies, that's all.

Your gonna watch it again...BWAHAHAHAHA! Sorry I just find hypocrites funny. Yes *****ing is human nature...but when you do it all day and nothing comes out of it it is moronic.

Yes, I agree. Spending whole days moaning about the FF movie would be quite dumb and sad. But what's that got to do with me ?

Everyone's got a life. Yes, even you. And none of us waste our WHOLE times in here. We just spend some of the spare times we have. And it's far from moronic. It's actually quite fun. Try to enjoy it sometimes, I do recommend it.
